BROWN, BURNHAM, BURT, DEARHOLT, TUCKER posted by Jane Peppler on 04/26/03

After mustering out of the 3rd Ohio Infantry, Adin BURT (born 1842 in Cardington, Morrow County Ohio) became a "buyer of hides" and settled in Loganville, Sauk County (1864) near his grandparents Adin and Judith Brockway TUCKER. In 1865 he was married by minister John DEARHOLT (who had traveled with the Tuckers from Morrow County) to Almira BURNHAM, daughter of James Burnham and Rebecca BROWN, in Loganville. Two children were born to Adin and Almira in Sauk County: Marvin (1865) and Marion George Burt (1867). James BURNHAM, father of Almira, was born 1820 in Canada or England. He entered the U.S. at Detroit in 1859 and settled in Sauk, where he made a Declaration of Intent 21 August 1861. His wife was Rebecca Brown, about whom I know nothing more.

BROCKWAY, BROWN, BURNHAM, BURT, DEERHOLT, TUCKER posted by Jane Peppler on 04/26/03

Adin TUCKER was born in 1790 in Orange County, Vermont; his wife wife Judith BROCKWAY was born 1787 in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. They moved to St. Lawrence County, Saratoga Township where their five daughters were born: Jane, Adaline, Emily, Celynda, and Laura. Adin Tucker got a Michigan land warrant on August 14 1837 but did not go to Michigan - he moved to Delaware County, Lincoln Township, in 1840. Martin BROCKWAY, his wife's father, moved too. His daughter Emily married Adin BURT. After she died in 1852, the Tuckers left Morrow County. They moved to land west of Loganville by 1853. Found in 1860 Sauk County WI Census, Washington Cty, (where Adin, his grandson, married Almira): Adin b 1790, Judith b. 1787 NH, Harriet Jones 8 b. OH, Lewis Wright 9 b. Ohio. An Ynez or Yure (f) Tucker b. 1850 WI is living in home of D. S. Clay, 42, from Vermont. They donated the land for the United Brethren Church at Tuckertown, which was named for them. On Town of Washington page: "Mr. Aden Tucker and family came as early as that year (1853) also, for it is known that a daughter, Miss Jane Tucker, taught a private school in her father's house in 1853. The Tucker family located in the valley west of Loganville, near the head of Narrows Creek, and the community known as Tuckertown takes its identity from its pioneer settler." "Cemetery Inscriptions of Sauk County" Vol 2 says Adin and Judith are also in the 1870 census. Also says Dearholts are buried in the Tuckertown cemetery. A daughter died August 1854 and is buried in the cemetery (In Town of Delton, Sauk 1860, a J. Tucker b 1820, Physician b. Vermont, and wife Mehitable b 1821 New Hampshire, and kids born NH and Wisconsin. From 1929 "The History of Reedsburg and the Upper Baraboo Valley" by Merton Krug: "The United Brethren Church at Tuckertown, now supplanted by a Lutheran Church, was organized about 1868, and the meetings were held in private homes. The first Pastor was Rev. George Hickey. (Maybe Nickey) [On June 21, 1875 Adin and Mary A. Tucker sold land in section 14, town of Washington, for $100 to the trustees ... A church was built in 1876 ... with the pastor being Rev. James Aldrich."] In 1876 a frame church was erected at the point known as Tuckertown, and was dedicated the last Sunday in June, 1877. ... John Shoup, Nelson Blood, William Blackburn, Levi Purdy and Philip Apple. Aden Tucker donated the site." I am trying to find out more about this family. , and relatives James Burnham immigrant from Ontario and Adin Burt (their grandson), his marriage in Logansville to Almira Burnham and the births of Marion and Marvin Burt.

ALFORD, Albert is listed in the Index for WI 1855 State Census Sauk County, New Buffalo. Has anyone seen him on that census? Unfortunately, state censuses are not on-line, are they? I have not been able to find him in later federal censuses. Can someone do a 'look-up' for the information that is with his name? Thank you!

BATES, STEARNS, STOWE posted by Adolph W. Johnson on 05/10/03

I am seeking information about Laura Stearns (married name of second husband, first husband was Stowe, and maiden name was Bates). She was living in Merrimack at the 1880 census. She was 57 years old at that time and living with her son, Milton Stowe. She may have been a mid-wife (she was for her own family, but I don't know about the rest of the county). She had a daughter, Ursula Stearns, 18 at the 1880 census and possibly the daughter (or step daughter) of her second marriage. Specific information is anything relating to her second husband (all we know now is that is name was Stearns), activities, travels, life or death (hope that's not too broad). Thanks
