Wayne McConnell and C.R. Keith of Scott Co., Virginia have announced plans for a monument honoring the Nickelsville Spartan Band, later Company E, 48th Virginia Infantry.
According to Cousin Wayne, C.R. Keith and a group of concerned citizens of Nickelsville have managed to get a 20 acre piece of land for the County, directly across from the Nickelsville Elementary School. The Scott County Board of Supervisors have agreed to build a park on this land. They have further agreed to allow the placement of a large monument on this land in honor of the Spartan Band.
The names of the men who formed the Nickelsville Spartan Band will be carved in granite, along with a summary of what the Spartan Band was and what these men did.
Fund raising efforts are currently under way in the newspapers and on radio stations in the Scott County area. I am pleased to lend whatever assistance that I can to this effort through this web site. My two second great grandfathers, Stephen Broadwater and William Martin Hillman (pictured above) were members of this unit.
The McConnell and Related Clans non profit organization will be the focal point of donations and will account for the monies. When the appropriate amount is reached, they will buy and erect the monument.
Please send your donations to:

Members of the
Nickelsville Spartan Band:
The names on this roster are from two sources.
The first is Mr. Omer Addington's article, "The Nickelsville
Spartan Band", found in Hisorical Sketches of
Southwest Virginia. The second source is John D.
Chapla's 48th Virginia Infantry,
published by H.E. Howard, Inc. The soldiers shown by Chapla to
have enlisted in Nickelsville on July 2, 1861, are included here.
Please read through this list and get back to me with any
corrections you wish to make. Sources for your information would
be appreciated.
