According to Wayne McConnell of Gate City, VA, William S. McConnell married Lucy Louisa Compton on January 15, 1866. They had three children.

William is buried on a hill southwest of his father's (Samuel Richie McConnell) old log house in Scott County. Efforts have been made to preserve this site of the last resting place of this member of the "Immortal 600". The "Immortal 600" was a group of Confederate officers who, while prisoners of war, were held under Confederate fire at Battery Wagner, Morris Island, Charleston Harbor from September 17, 1864 to October 21, 1864.
