"Sam died at 43, three days after the birth of his son Sam III, my grandfather. He was the only Perry before of after who didn't make it well into his 70's. I often wonder if his stay in Elmira contributed to an early death."

Dan Perry also adds that Sam Perry was still listed as a private up until 2/28/65, when he appears as a sergeant on the "Muster Roll of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee" near Richmond. On 2/20/65, he was received as a parolee at Hospital #9, Richmond. On 2/21/65, he was transferred to Chimborazo Hospital.
