2010 Death: 10-13-2010 Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC.

2010 Obit: Greensboro News & Record (NC) - Friday, October 15, 2010 (src: GenealogyBank.com)

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Mildred Weaver Bowman McCormick, 95, of Wesley Harris Circle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Golden Living Center of Greensboro, after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2010 at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Chapel, with the Reverend Franklin Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.

Born in Schoolfield, Va. (now part of Danville) on June 1, 1915, Mildred grew up in Leaksville, NC, as the fifth child of Homer O. Weaver and Mattie Troy Edwards. In her youth she and her twin brother Hildred (known to everyone as Hick and Mick) were inseparable with their favorite pastimes being roller-skating down the Boulevard and performing the "Charleston" to earn spending money. In adulthood, Mildred joined Sears Roebuck & Co. Mail Order on Lawndale Drive, shortly after it opened, spending over 33 years with the company and becoming Supervisor of Dept. 170. Coworkers often referred to her as the "Lady with the Red Pencil", for her method of correcting billing errors. After retirement, she became an avid gardener and her 'green thumb' always had her vegetable garden overflowing and a wide variety of flowers in full bloom. Throughout her life, she was the "caretaker" of the family, caring for her parents and brother in their declining years, and was always available when someone needed financial help, a major appliance or a place to stay. Even though to most she seemed a bit standoffish, staid and un-emotional most of the time, in her later years, she often displayed a child-like playfulness and laughed easily with an unmistakable mischievous twinkle in her eye. Her strength and dedication to family will be sorely missed by those left to cherish her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Willford, Stafford (Scoop), and Hildred (Hick) Weaver and sister Thelma McCollum, as well as husbands Walter Obadiah Bowman, Jr. and Robert Vernon McCormick.

She is survived by daughters, Joanne Shepherd, of Concord, N.C., Peggy Mitchell, of the home; son, Jerry Bowman (Gail) of Brown Summit; grandchildren, David Mitchell (Pam), Renee' Gray, Misty Bowman, Tammy Bowman, and Chris Bowman (Dana) all of Greensboro, Mark Shepherd of Escondido, Calif., and Dr. Daniel Shepherd-Banigan (Megan) of Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren Jordan Gray, Brandon, Maddie, and Jackson Bowman.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home, prior to the service, and at other times at her residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to The American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Foundation.

He was predeceased by his stepdaughter, Cynthia Ann Nelson; and by his siblings, Irene W. Carr (Guy), Beatrice W. Ragsdale (Julian), Cecil R. Weaver (Jane) and James E. Weaver (Nancy).

He is survived by his wife, Mollie Little Weaver of the home; and by his children, Hobart A. Weaver Jr. (Cynthia), Greensboro, N.C., Mary Weaver Essa (James), Glen Allen, Va. and Robert E. Weaver (Bianca), Ashland, Va. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Derrick E. Weaver (Elizabeth), Stuarts Draft, Va., Jonathan A. Essa, New York, N.Y., Jennifer A. Essa, Chicago, Ill., Hobart A. Weaver III, Orlando, Fla., Gracie Lee Weaver, Greensboro, N.C., Anna Mae Weaver, Clearwater, Fla. and Abby-Christine Elizabeth Weaver, Greensboro, N.C.; and by his two great-grandchildren, Benjamin M. Mr. Weaver graduated from VPI in 1949 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While he was enrolled at Tech, he was head cheerleader and he continued to be a cheerleader for Tech for the remainder of his life. He was a member of Ut Prosim, a Golden Hokie, a member of the Committee of 100 (the advisory board of the School of Engineering) and in 2012, he was inducted into the Academy of Engineering Excellence at Virginia Tech. He began his Western Electric career in 1950 as a manufacturing engineer in Winston-Salem, N.C. During the next 20 years, he advanced through the ranks with increased engineering and operating responsibilities. In October 1970, while serving as Manager of Manufacturing at the Winston-Salem Shops, he was named Plant Manager of the new Electronics Systems Interconnecting Products Facility in Richmond, Va. In 1979, he became Director of Engineering and Manufacturing for the North Carolina Works. He took early retirement in June 1982, and became a partner in a small printed circuit shop, Tropical Circuits in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In 1984, he accepted a position as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Methode Electronics, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois. He retired for the third time in 1990 and moved back to Richmond, Va. Of all his work assignments, Mr. Weaver enjoyed his 1970 to 1979 stay in Richmond the most. During that period, in addition to his challenging job as manager of the world's largest stand-alone printed circuit facility, he was a member of the Virginia Manufacturing Association, the Richmond Rotary Club, the Central Richmond Association, the Engineers' Club of Richmond, Inc. and the Bull and Bear Club. He was also a member of the executive committee of Richmond Memorial Hospital, the board of directors of the Bank of Virginia, and the board of directors of the Metropolitan Richmond Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Weaver was Metro Chairman for the National Alliance of Businessmen in 1977. He served as president of the Young Men's Christian Association of Metropolitan Richmond in 1977 and as chairman of a YMCA major fundraising campaign in 1978. He was a member of the 1970 class in the 'Program in American Studies for Executives' at Williams College. He was a member of the American Society of (continued) (WEAVER continued) Mechanical Engineers, and was awarded the Society's Edwin F. Church Medal in 1974 for 'demonstrating not only his own qualifications as a practicing engineer and as an administrator of engineering projects, but also for managing, during a very busy career, to devote many hours of his time and experience in guiding and supporting his own and other schools of engineering.' He was listed in Who's Who In Engineering, in the Blue Book Edition of Community Leaders of Virginia, and in Who's Who in Technology Today. After finally accepting that it was time to retire, he enjoyed playing golf with the Senior's Group at the Dominion Club at Wyndham in Glen Allen, Va. and became a loving grandfather, 'The Chief' to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St., where services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015.
