Obituary: Sarah Thompson Simmons, Wife of Hosea Simmons, departed this life June 19, 1933, age 67 years. She had been in poor health for several years, but for the past ten months she lingered between life and death. Her husband, children, and many good friends anxiously watching and hoping for her recovery, but all in vain. Different doctors were called to see her and did all they could, but we all have to yeild to His pleasure. The Lord gave her wonderful display of the riches and glory of His grace. She was perfectly willing to die, and talked beautiful, asking her husband and children to meet her in heaven. With all her own burden, she helped to bear theirs, she gave to the poor, understandingly no one ever went away from her door hungry. She would always divide with those in need. She joined the Primitive Baptist church, but owing to her sickness, she was not baptised.. she often spoke of how she would love to be buried beneath the liquid wave. Funeral services were held at White Oak Grove Church by her pastor, Elder J. M. Dickerson, in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing relations and friends, after which she was laid to rest in the cemetery nearby. She leaves to mourn her sad death, her husband, one daughter, and and six sons, Garfield, Kellie, and Dolph, of Iowa...Nasby of Illinois, Crosby of Roanoke, and Lummon of home. Mrs. Mettie Akers of IL. Three brothers, Wade of Riner, Two sisters, Mrs. Isaac Hill of Floyd, and Maude Fulcher of Christiansburg. We'll try to live to meet dear mother. Roanoke Times on 1/19/2008. Kenneth Charles Thompson, 91, of Salem,
and formerly of Pulaski County, died early Friday morning, January 18, 2008,
in Richfield Retirement Center. He was born July 26, 1916, in Floyd, Va., and
was the son of the late James L. Thompson and Almeda Duncan Thompson. He was
a retired employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant and served as a farmer
for many years in Pulaski County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded
in death by his wife, Clendis Mary Lou Simpkins
Thompson; his daughter, Artis Laverne McPeak, who just recently died on
December 13; three brothers, Dallas Thompson, Russell Thompson and James
Thompson; and two sisters, Etta Mae Dulaney and Vera Akers. He is survived by
one son, Linfred Thompson, of Salem; daughters and
sons-in-laws, Lorene and Cecil White, of Salem, Phyllis and Larry Link, of
Christiansburg, Mardell Wimmer, of Salem, and Sharon and Olan Smythers, of Dublin; eleven grandchildren; thirteen
great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Elva Simpkins Flinchum and
Trinkle Thompson. Special thanks to special friend, Lena Hostetter, who
helped take such good care of him. Also, thanks to the staff of Richfield's
for allowing him to have his own flower and tomato garden that he loved so
much. He was well known for entertaining his friends and fellow residents at
Richfield Retirement Community with his unique old-time banjo picking. He
will be greatly missed by his son and daughters, his grandchildren, his
friend, Lena, and many other friends. Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. Monday, January 21, 2008, at Thomas M. Seagle
& Sons with the Rev. Eddie Callahan officiating. Interment will be in the
Simpkins Family Cemetery, Hiwassee. The family will receive friends Sunday,
January 20, 2008, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences
