Funeral services for Arthur Lee Gaines Jr., 24, of Van Vleck will be held 2 p. m. Thursday at St. John Baptist Church, Van Vleck, with the Rev. Ruben Newell officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Van Vleck. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. today at Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home and from 1 to 2 p. m. Thursday at the church. Mr. Gaines was born Nov. 10, 1964, in Freeport and died Jan. 18, 1989, at his residence. Survivors include his parents, Arthur Lee and Lorraine; four sisters, Georgia Ann, Rosetta, Jackie and Bobbie Jean; two brothers, Charles and Amos; grandmother, Elmira Davis Hutchinson and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will be members of his family and friends. Arrangement are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, Bay City.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Jerry Lee Gartica was born October 3, 1939 in Van Vleck, Texas to the late Willie Thompson and the late Velma Monroe. She was raised in Palacios, Texas where she accepted Christ at a young age. Jerry was blessed with a loving family consisting of three sisters, the late Joe Beth Casey (Preston Casey), Alice Polk, and Charlene Armstead, and two brothers: Lonnie Grover (Ruby Grover) and the late Roy Thompson. Sister and brothers-in-law; Audrey Bouldin, Andrew Gartica, Manuel and Patricia Gartica. Loraine and James Calyen, Amy Gartica, Ernestine Perkins, Hollis and Morgan Word, and Roxie Merion Chenier, Sophonia Barell. Jerry attended Hilliard High in Bay City, Texas where she played basketball and was a varsity cheerleader. Jerry met the Rev. Isaiah Gartica in 1965 and they were married on March 27th, 1967. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Jerry attended Huston Tillotson University in Austin, Texas, worked her way through nursing school. She was a nurse at Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City for over 40 years. She continued working there part time after her retirement. She was a committed member of the Bay City chapter of the Heroines of Jericho, where she served as a Junior Matron. Jerry dedicated her life to service, nursing, her family, and most importantly, serving the Lord. She was a devoted pastor's wife. She and her husband Isaiah joined Bethel Baptist Church under the Rev. L.C. Cunningham Sr. together in the mid-1970s. She then joined St. Peter's Baptist Church when Rev. Isaiah Gartica was installed as the minister there in 1987. Jerry loved her family, and she loved people in general. That love was displayed everywhere she went. Her loving sisters, Joe Beth and Alice Polk, were never far from her side. Alice was with Jerry until she transitioned into her new life on July 20, 2007. Jerry leaves to cherish her memory a devoted and loving husband the Rev. Isaiah Gartica, two children, Nedra Montgomery (Jodi Montgomery) of Austin, Texas, and Edwin Gartica (Melinda Gartica) of Round Rock, Texas; five grandchildren Keire Gartica, Darius Montgomery, Darielle Gartica, Zavien Gartica, and Omarr Montgomery; Her sisters; Alice Polk of Palacios, Texas and Charlene Armstead of Compti, Louisana; a brother Lonnie Grover and Ruby Grover of Killeen, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Jerry will be greatly missed, but the family understands Jerry's absence from the mortal body simply validates that she is now in the presence of the Lord. Gibson, Mrs. Eloise, of West Columbia, passed away in Methodist Hospital, Houston, October 26 at age 39. She is survived by her husband, Leroy Gibson, of West Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Brown, Bay City and Marilyn Donely, Van Vleck. Also parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Jackson, Van Vleck; two sisters: Mrs. Lizzie Lee Williams and Mrs. Ruth V. Ashton, of Van Vleck; two brothers: The Reverend Harold S. Williams, Van Vleck, and Herbert Miller of California; one grandson, Christopher Brown, of Bay City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 29, at 2:00 p. m., at St. Johns Baptist Church, Van Vleck. The Reverend O. L Reynolds will officiate. Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery.
