Shrimper Killed By Flying Auto

A 48-year-old Matagorda man was killed Sunday morning when his shrimp boat was smashed by a car which had left the roadway at the Colorado River near Matagorda.

Walter Clay Jr., a shrimper, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old John Maxwell of Wharton, was admitted to Matagorda General Hospital where he was reported to be in satisfactory condition Monday morning.

According to the DPS accident report, Maxwell’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed on south highway 60 when it left the pavement, went over a levee, struck the pilot house of a docked shrimp boat and landed in the water.

Clay was apparently in the boat’s pilot house at the time. Officials believe he drowned due to injuries after being knocked overboard.

A team of three divers including two members of the Bay City Police Department, managed to locate Clay’s body while searching for the car, which was said to have been found near the opposite side of the river.

The accident took place just before noon Sunday.

Information on whether charges would be pressed was not made available.
