Funeral services for Lexie Alexander Jr., of Brazoria, are scheduled for 3 p. m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 1995, at Jesus Free Will Holy Temple Church in Bay City with the Rev. L. R. Eath officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Van Vleck. Visitation will be until 9 p. m. Friday at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home. Mr. Alexander was born May 17, 1932, in Brazoria to Lexie Alexander Sr. and Tennessee Parks-Alexander and died Feb. 11, 1995, at Sweeny Community Hospital in Sweeny. He was a member of the Methodist church and the owner of Smoki’s Barbeque in Brazoria. Survivors include his wife, Annie Mae Dickson-Alexander of Brazoria; three daughters, Myra L. Brady of Houston, Tanya L. Robinson of Bay City and Linda K. Alexander of Lake Jackson; three sons, Larry J. Cadd of West Columbia, Cleo W. Cadd of Austin and Anthony J. Jones of Houston; 10 grandchildren, LeJon, Marcus, Tiffany, Anthony, Shamika, Lexie, Ashley, Mike, Alexander and Shanice; two sisters, Ora Lee Hawkins of La Marque and Bernice Anderson of Brazoria; three brothers, Henry Alexander of Danciger, Pierce Alexander of Old Ocean and Anthony Alexander of Houston; an uncle, Anthony “Sweetchild” Alexander of California and nieces, nephews, other relatives and a family of friends, which include Floyd Bess and all the patrons of Smoki’s Barbeque. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Johnnie Mae Specht Alexander; a daughter, Amber Dale; three sisters, Lizzie, Lena B. and Inez Alexander and one brother, Timothy Fields. Funeral services for Mary Lee Davis Allen, 75, of Van Vleck, are scheduled for 2 p. m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church in Van Vleck with the Rev. Ruben Newell officiating. Mrs. Allen was born Jan. 19, 1919, to Milton and Alice Simmons Davis and died April 8, 1994, in Matagorda House. A resident of the Van Vleck community, she was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include a son, Eugene Stroman of Van Vleck; a granddaughter, Brenda Stroman Lewis of Bay City; a foster daughter, Josie Eldridge of Bay City; four sisters, Elizabeth Hines of Marino, Calif., Carrie Davis of Bay City and Derotha Jones and Elmira Hutchison, both of Van Vleck; a brother, William Davis of Van Vleck and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Mr. John Alliniece, III, age 41, will be held Thursday, May 11, 1995, at 2:00 p. m. at the St. John Baptist Church in Van Vleck, with Rev. Ruben Newell, officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 10th, at 11:00 a. m. at Brentwood Baptist Church, Houston, Texas, with Dr. Joe Ratliff, presiding, and from 3 til 9 p. m. at the Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel in Bay City. Mr. Alliniece was born November 30, 1953, in Bay City, to John Alliniece, Jr. and Johnnie Mae Wright-Alliniece, and died May 7, 1995, at St. Luke Hospital in Houston. He was a resident of Houston and formerly of Van Vleck, and a 1972 graduate of Van Vleck High School. He was a Baptist by faith, a well-known area musician, and was employed by Harris County until his 1991 retirement. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John (Johnnie Mae Wright) Alliniece, Jr. of Van Vleck, two sisters, Ms. Daisy L. Alliniece of Van Vleck, and Ms. Ella G. Alliniece of Missouri City; one brother and sister-in-law, Michael (& Terry) Alliniece of Van Vleck. Also a god-son, Jonathan Head of Houston, and two godbrothers, Rodney Ashton of Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and Clarence Southall of Bay City. Funeral Service for Mrs. Clem Monroe Ashton, age 77, will be held Wednesday, April 26th at 2:00 P. M. at the St. John Baptist Church in Van Vleck, with Rev. Ruben Newell officiating. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery in Van Vleck. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 25th until 9 P. M. at the Duncan Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Ashton, was a lifetime resident of Van Vleck, and was a Baptist by faith. She was born September 9, 1917 in Van Vleck, Texas, to Dan Monroe and Jane Odoms Monroe, and died April 21, 1995 at Matagorda General Hospital. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Earnestine Austin, Mrs. Geraldean Martin and Mrs. Moseann Tolbert, all of Van Vleck, Mrs. Jane Williams and Mrs. Bobbye Clark, both of Houston, and five sons, Luther Lee, Horace Ashton, Jr., Curt Ashton, Arthur Ashton and Richard Ashton, all of Van Vleck. Also three sisters, Mrs. Louella Boone of Palacios, Mrs. Elsie Simon of Liberty, and Mrs. Mary Shelton of Kingsville, as well as 50 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, an extended family of other relatives and friends. James Carl Ashton was born in Burr, Wharton County, Texas, on August 22, 1922, to Steven Ashton and Mosann Robbins Ashton, and passed away April 18, 2013, in Houston, Texas. He attended school in Wharton and Matagorda counties; after which, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in World War II in Europe, and was honorably discharged in December 1943. After marrying the love of his life, Ruth Vernell Williams, J.C. decided to further his education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in liberal education. His first teaching assignment was at O.H. Herman High School in Van Vleck, presently the O. H. Herman Middle School. He taught government and economics; coached track, football, basketball and baseball. He continued these talents at Van Vleck High School. His professional career in education spanned 33 years before retiring from the Van Vleck ISD. Ashton was an active member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Van Vleck, under the leadership of Rev. Ruben Newell. He served as Deacon Board chairman, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and Brotherhood President. J.C. was also very active in the Van Vleck community. He organized and coached the first integrated Little League Baseball team in Van Vleck, and organized the first Black Cub Scouts in the Van Vleck community. After retirement, his desire was to continue touching lives and showing love for God and people. His civic involvement included, founder of the O.H. Herman All School Alumni Association, member of the Matagorda County Historical Society, and board member of the Matagorda County Water District in Van Vleck. He also loved carpentry, fishing and sports. J.C. Ashton was known for many quotes, was very conscious of time, and often expressed, ‘TIME WAITS ON NO MAN!’ He leaves to cherish his precious memories; a loving and devoted wife, Ruth (Sweetie); three daughters; Patricia Ashton, Mamie Emerson and Eric, and Diane Woodard and Charles, all of Van Vleck. Also three sons, the Rev. James ‘Butch’ Ashton, Jr. and Janice of Bay City, Gary Ashton, Sr. and Clara and Marvin Ashton, all of Van Vleck; also seven grandchildren, Rodney Ashton, Sr. (and Valisha), Tynee Franklin (and Victoria), Gary Ashton, Jr., Charles Woodard, Jr., Patrick Woodard, Brandi Perez and Miranda Ashton; five great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and many, many devoted former students and his loving church family.
