Seeking any info on grandparents: John HANKS or HENKS born approx. 1850- Germany to John Hanks/Henks and Elizabeth POHLMUELLER. Lived in Columbus, Platte Co. in 1913, also lived and perhaps died in Shelby, Polk Co. NE Grandmother Mary Zohner or Suner born approx. 1887-Austria near Prinzdorf & High German. Sister Annie married to a Hakel, either Ernest or Louie who moved to Grand Junction, CO. Most of family appeared to be farmers. Other related names are Roderick, Bender, Filp or Filfs, possibly Anna Zohner Wienlich. Spellings of Zohner differ: Suner, Sunir, Soehnel. I've been told the old pronunciation is Suna. My father, John Aloysuis Hanks, was born June 30,1914 in Columbus, Platte Co. NE. He had a younger brother, Herman. Both boys were taken away from the parents and sent to Father Flanagan's Boys Town in Omaha, NE July 5, 1922. His Mother's address at the time was shown as Shelby, NE as well as Arlington, NE. I have other info. but guess this is a good start?

BILLSTONE, SALESTROM, STOLZE posted by Hal Haswell on Wednesday, March 5, 1997

These could also be St. Edward in Boone County. Both St. Ed(ward) and Platte Co., are mentioned in material I have. Salem Lutheran Church and cemetery are also mentioned. I have been to the church and the cemetery and it looks like the road past the church might be the county line (from the map I had).

"Mike" and Maria Farrell Boyle had know children: William born 1873, Jennie A. born 1875, Ida born 1876, John born 1876, Thomas born 1880, all of these children except for Thomas were born in Columbus area...Thomas was born in Rawlings WY, shortly after the birth of Thomas , Maria Farrell Boyle died due to complications of childbirth, her body was returned to Columbus for burial in May 1880, she is buried at Shell Creek Cemetery. Ida Boyle died in 1882, buried at Columbus, Jennie A. died 1881,Thomas Boyle died 1880. These last two children are buried with their mother at Shell Creek Cemetery. After the death of Maria Boyle these children were left with family members in Columbus to be cared for as John Michael worked for the Railroad in WY. It is known that a family named Kane (O'Kane) cared for some of the children...what is the Kane connection? William Boyle & Hanorah Sheehan were the parents of John Michael Boyle and believed to have remained in Ire. What happened to the two remaining sons of "Mike" & Maria Boyle; William & John??? John Michael Boyle remarried for second time to Nancy Stallings in 1882 at Logan Utah, this union also produced three sons. Other related Boyle family members are Patrick Boyle of Cambridge MA & Margaret Boyle Landrigan also Cambridge. The Boyle family immigrated from Ire>NF>P.E.I.>MA.NE>WY>UT....WHERE in Ireland did this Boyle family originate? COOK, DARLING, GALLEY, RICKLEY posted by Tonya Sarver on Monday, June 9, 1997

Looking to find Amanda DARLING-COOK in 1870 census of Platte Co. NB. Was told and did find her marriage to John Jacob RICKLEY Jr., son of John J. RICKLEY-founder of town of Columbus. According to records in Platte Co. Amanda married John RICKLEY in 1869. She was once marrried to a Rufus COOK and had a child named Clara by him. Cannot find Amanda with John RICKLEY in 1870 census. Only could find John living with relatives in Platte County- working as a store clerk in Columbus. Where was Amanda with child Clara in 1870. Amanda also was pregnant and had another daughter named Mary Edith-born March of that year. Did Amanda run off to family?? or did she have child alone?? Amanda's parents were living in nearby Colfax County at the time, but she was not with them. There was another John RICKLEY listed in Colfax County- 1870 but ages and birthplaces do not match. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Amanda in 1870 or information about her daughter Clara would be appreciated. Amanda died in 1878 and was buried in the DARLING family plot in the Columbus Cemetery. John went on to raise Clara and Mary Edith with his second wife Sarah GALLEY. Did Amanda really divorce Rufus Cook in Iowa before marriage to John RICKLEY??

KOBOS, KOBUS, KOLODZIEJ, TOBOR posted by Michael Korgie on Wednesday, June 25, 1997

I am looking for other families that have emigrated from Tarnow, Poland to Platte County Nebraska from about 1875-1890. Tarnow is a Polish City as well as a Polish Province. Many of the "Austrian" Poles in Platte County simply said "Tarnow" when asked for a place of birth. Sometimes they were referring to the Tarnow Province, other times they were just giving a placename that was easier for the English-speaking people to understand and spell. I have just completed a search that traced my family (KOLODZIEJ, KOBUS/KOBOS) back to the late 1700's in Nagoszyn and Mokre, Poland (both in the Tarnow Province). They emigrated to Columbus in the 1880's. I know of at least one other Platte County family (TOBOR) that was also from Mokre.
