Honorary pall bearers were Sidney Champagne, Gifford Champagne, Mac McClanahan, Frank Cobbs, J. J. Fitzpatrick, Walter McFeron, Jim Bush, Bryant Thedford, Grover Klaus and Jack Deyton.

Donahue of Edna and Mrs. Cleason Cooper of Teague, Texas.

Mrs. George was born in Pontotoc, Miss., Dec. 10, 1891. The George family moved to Texas in 1923 and have made their home here since that time.

Mrs. George was truly a Christian having been an active member of the Baptist Church since the age of 12. Her membership was in the Red Bluff Baptist Church.

Her death followed an illness of about eight months during which she suffered much physical pain. Her faith endured these dark hours. When death came it was a welcome relief.

While undergoing treatment at the Torbett Hospital In Marlin, Texas, the following poem was written for her by Dr. J. W. Torbett:

“A Prayer For You”

God give you strength to bear the gnawing pains,
That robs your body of its needed rest;
God give you faith and hope to help you gain.
That fortitude which makes your soul be blest/
A soul that lives a life of useless ease
Can never reach those heights of joy sublime;
A heart that craves the selfish things to please
Itself alone, burns up God’s precious time.
You’ve had the joys of life and sorrows, too,
And left your love’s imprint on others herts’
The garlands gathered that by hour pathway grew;
An holy fragrance to your friends imparts;
Then may your life reach last a fruitful end
As angels with your soul to heaven ascend.

We, her family, know that we can not bring our mother back, but through faith we may hope to see her some day.

We extend our sincere thanks to those who were so near and so helpful during our bereavement, and to those who sent and brought the many beautiful flowers; employees of Humble Oil Company and the Victoria Bank and Trust Co., members of the Red Bluff Baptist Church and Lolita Baptist Church, and the many thoughts who were so kind and thoughtful.

C. R. George and Children.

Grandma Gerni Passes

Sunday morning, June 26th, at 2:13 o’clock death came to Grandma Gerni, as she was known and called by one and all.

Death was indeed in shock, but not a surprise to those near and dear to this grandmother, for she had been suffering for many years from goiter and heart complications. But she had only been completely confined by her bed two weeks.

She is the last one of her family to pass away. Her mother passed on when she was only three years of age; her father passed away in 1941, a brother in 1918, and three brothers in infancy.

Mrs. Gerni was 67 years of age this past January 18th. She was born in San Saba, San Saba County, moving to Calhoun County with her father and brother, later moving to Victoria.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Charles Gerni at Victoria, Texas and to this union three children were born: Mrs. Pauline (Gerni) Carelton; Mrs. Christine (Gerni) Kelton, and Little Morris George Gerni, who only lived 4 months and 12 days. His death was caused by hydrocephalus and his suffering was great until the death angel was also a mercy angel. He was laid to rest in the Nursery Cemetery.

Grandma was a nurse by profession and sickness you found her. Never tiring or once thinking of herself. They helped to shorten her own days.

She had helped some 400 children into this world. This was her specialty in nursing, and so many times remarked she felt so near to God when she could do something for a helpless baby.

Although she went on any and all kinds of cases, over any kind of road and in any kind of weather, and was a mercy where ever there was trouble. Whenever she would meet the children, she would say “here is one of my children.”

The funeral service was held in the First Baptist Church of Red Bluff. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. Frank Hollan, assisted by Rev. J. M. Thomas and Rev. T. D. Felts, Monday evening at 2 o’clock. The remains were laid to rest in the Red Bluff Cemetery by side of her father, brother, nephew and granddaughter.

The pallbearers were: Messrs. A J. Matusek of Hallettsville; Mike Newport, D. J. Walker, Leon Frels, D. J. Sutton and T. F. Cobbs.—Contributed.
