D. W. Dobbs
Drowned Yesterday morning about seven o'clock, D. W. Dobbs of Edna, while throwing a cast net for fish bait at Deckroe's [Decrow's] Point was accidentally drowned. A large party of folks from Edna were at the Point fishing and when Mr. Dobbs was seen to be in danger an attempt was made to save him, but the had stopped into deep water and either the weight of the heavy net attached to his wrist dragged him down or he was attacked by cramps, for he sank before assistance reached him and rose no more. A searching party left Port Lavaca this morning to recover the body if possible. He was said to be a good swimmer, and everyone is surprised that he failed to save himself. County Attorney Dobbs Drowned Special to the Advocate. Edna, June 13.--A telegram from W. P. Laughter at Port Lavaca to Col. G. Egg was received here this morning stating the Mr. Dobbs (D. W. Dobbs) had been drowned at Pass Cavallo, the body had not been recovered at that time. The news was very meagre and no particulars are obtainable at present. Edna Lodge K. of P. of which Mr. Dobbs was a member, sent a committee composed of P. Kleas, W. W. McCrary [McCrory?] and J. A. White to the scene of the drowning and all efforts will be made to recover the body. No man stood better in Jackson county than did D. W. Dobbs. The Body Found Yesterday morning the body of D. W. Dobbs, of Edna, who was drowned Monday last, was found near Decroe's Point, within a few hundred yards of the place where he sank. The remains were shipped through here today from Port Lavaca to Edna, where they were interred. Victoria Advocate, June 17, 1899 Edna Echoes On Friday morning Hon. W. P. Laughter and family, accompanied by County Attorney D. W. Dobbs and others, left for a ten days' outing at Pass Caballo [Cavallo]. Yesterday we were greatly shocked and grieved to hear of the death by drowning of Mr. Dobbs, which took place Monday morning. Mr. Dobbs graduated at the State University two years ago, and immediately located here, and by his manly bearing and untiring energy, had firmly planted himself in the confidence and esteem of all the people. He was a member of the order of Knights of Pythias, and on hearing of his death, the Chancellor Commander of Edna Lodge telegraphed the Port Lavaca lodge to make every effort to find the body, and a committee of the lodge, consisting of R. W. McCrory, Mr. Dobbs' partner; P. Kleas and J. A. White, at once left to spend a few days in searching for the body. Victoria Advocate, June 17, 1899 Attorney Dobbs Drowned While Fishing for Bait Edna, Texas, June 14.--An eye-witness to the drowning of County Attorney D. W. Dobbs states that he was at Decros Point, very near the gulf side; that he was throwing a cast net for fish bait and when it was seen that Mr. Dobbs was in danger an attempt was made to rescue him but he had ventured too far into the deep water and either the weight of the net attached to his wrist dragged him down or he was attacked by cramps and sank before any assistance could reach him. Several searching parties have been organized to recover the body and a letter from one of the party addressed to The Post correspondent, received here today, stated that no trace of the body had so for been found, that a heavy tide was coming in at the time of the drowning, that the search would be continued for several days, believing that they would be able to recover the body at least within a few days, after it had sufficient time to drift ashore. Mr. Dobbs' aged parents and a brother, Dr. J. C. Dobbs, the remaining members of the family, reside here, having but recently removed from Louisiana to this place. He was born in Attalla county, Mississippi, on April 20, 1869 and came to Texas in 1885. His popularity in Jackson county was unbounded and the people, recognizing his admirable traits of character and his ability as an attorney, elected him at the last election to the office of county attorney by an overwhelming majority, which position he has filled with greatest credit, and his ability is readily found by a reference to the records of the courts in in which he has served the State as county attorney. The entire people of this county feel a deep sense of the loss they have sustained by the untimely demise of their honorable and worthy servant and his aged parents and brother have the sympathy of a people that honored and loved the son and brother whose loss is felt almost as keenly by them. Mr. Dobbs was a graduate of Baylor University in Waco, also a graduate in law of the State university, and removed to this place in July, 1897, and made his maiden speech at the bar in this county and his career as a lawyer has been a remarkable success and his office will be hard to fill with the same marked success. Houston Post, June 16, 1899
Edna Items Edna, Texas, June 16.--Every member of the bar at this place signed a petition here yesterday asking for the appointment by the commissioners court of W. W. McCrary, Esq., Mr. Dobbs' former law partner, to fill out the unexpired term as county attorney. Mr. McCrary was appointed county attorney by the commissioners court here this morning and has made his bond and filed the same with the county clerk. The committee sent out by Edna lodge Knights of Pythias No. 146 to search for in Tuesday's and Friday's Post, returned yesterday with the body which was interred at Prairie City White cemetery at this place under the auspices of Edna lodge K. or P. A committee from Port Lavaca lodge K. of P. assisted the committee from Edna lodge in recovering the body. Hooks were made and weighted down by a steel bar, with which the body was recovered about noon on Thursday after two days spent in dragging the pass and adjacent waters The location of the body was discovered by a close examination of the water's surface. The drag was arranged and the first attempt made resulted in one hook of the drag catching in one of the shoe tops of the drowned man and the body was safely raised to the surface and put on board the sloop Mystery, which was engaged for the search party. The body was in a very bad condition. The small bone of one leg was broken and a portion gone, the general supposition being that a shark had hold of the body at the time of the drowning. It was found about 300 yards from the place where the dead man was seen to sink, in water about twenty feet deep, and had never risen, and would not have risen to the waters surface, and all clothing was torn from the body, the flesh badly lacerated and the larger portion destroyed. The Port Lavaca lodge sent a committee with the committee from Edna lodge to accompany the remains to this place for burial, which was composed of the following members of that lodge; Dr. Peterson, William James, Tax Assessor George and Sheriff Raymour. One of the largest funeral processions ever witnessed here met the eastbound train yesterday and followed the remains to the cemetery. Memorial services will be conducted at the Baptist Church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Houston Post, June 19, 1899 A large congregation assembled at the Baptist church on Sunday morning in memory of the lamented D. W. Dobbs. The story of his life as told by County Attorney McCrory, was interesting and touching, and showed how a determination to be something and do something will finally win. The address of Rev. Dr. Evans was exceedingly appropriate. Addresses were also made by Revs. Devant and Mitchell and Rev. Dobbs, father of deceased, pronounced the benediction.--FAP. Victoria Advocate, June 24, 1899

Mike was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado. “Uncle Mike” as he was known by his family and friends, was an avid sportsman who loved to fish and hunt as well as watch as much baseball as he could fit into his schedule. He was thrilled to be able to watch the Astros win the World Series. Mike grew up in Atascosa and McMullen counties and liked to tell stories of his hunts in those pastures there. He still loved to hunt on family land along the Lipan Creek in Atascosa County, where he bagged many fine whitetail bucks. For most of his latter years, he lived on a beautiful farm near Ganado, which gave him access to many prime fishing spots. One of his favorite activities was catching fish with his buddies for his annual birthday “fish fry” at a family reservoir known as “The Bottom.” Uncle Mike served is country in The United States Navy. He and his brother Alfred were both veterans of the Korean War. Mike worked many years in road and bridge construction with his brother Edward. One of his “prize” projects was the Highway 281 Bridge at Campbellton, Texas over the Atascosa River built in 1951-1952 and is still in use today. Uncle Mike married a wonderful lady, Louise Hahn, in Ganado in 1972. Mike and Louise lived together on her family’s farm for many years and enjoyed raising beautiful crops in the fertile soil. Mike especially liked farming rice and having a vegetable garden. Mike loved eating pickled beets and okra as well as fresh produce. Mike loved playing dominoes with the locals in the area and made many friends with their shared past time. Uncle Mike was always a joyful man, he looked forward to the family reunions and visiting with all the relatives, especially the little ones. He loved taking his family out to restaurants to enjoy a big meal with a sweet dessert. We always looked forward to his visits. He was a loving man who cared a lot for his family and friends. Mike is survived by his brother, Edward Dworaczyk and his wife Sandra of Milano, Texas; his daughter-in-law Gloria Hahn; and his great-grandson Corbin Gutierrez of Ganado; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families; his very special care giver Joyce Jenkins and George Kyttle, his niece Lisa Cano and her husband Jeff of Victoria; and his many friends in the Ganado and Victoria area that he considered his extended family.
