Augustin “Augie” Barrios

Augustin “Augie” Barrios, of Edna, Texas, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2017, with his loving family by his side at the age of 70. He was born in La Salle, Texas on July 8, 1946, to the late Victoriano Ortiz Barrios, Sr. and Sabina Perez Gonzales.

Augie graduated from Industrial High School in 1965, and then served in the U.S. Army for 5 years and the U.S. Navy for 4 years, He served 3 tours in Vietnam and became Shellback after crossing the equator onboard USS Gridley (DLG-21). Augie was a loving and caring father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved baseball and was his grandchildren’s biggest supporter with sports and school activities. He was a coach and umpire for Jackson County. Augie will be remembered for his beautiful green eyes, his smile, and the jokester that he was.

Augie is survived by his daughters; Veronica Soto (Sammy), Josie Lannette Barrios and Roxeanna Jean Gonzales; son, Lionel Barrios (Jackie); sisters, Emily Benavides (Paul), Teresa Ortiz (Carmen), Lenora Perez (Robert), and Olivia Barrios; brothers, Victor Barrios, Jr., Joe Lopez (Olga), Lupe Lopez (Judy), and Felix Lopez; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; life time companion and best friend, Janie Castillo Barrios; sister-in-law, Nancy Lopez and numerous nieces & nephews.

Augie is preceded in death by his parents; mother, Teofila Barrios; son, Augustin Jamie Barrios; sister, Maria Elena Cantu; brother, Danny Lopez; grandson, Richard Brandon Martinez, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, from 5-6:30 P.M. with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 P.M. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass to be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at 10:00 A.M., in the St. John Bosco Parish of Vanderbilt. Burial with full Military Honors to follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Inez. Reverend Johnson Owusu-Boateng will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Benavides, Edward Bermea, Javier Sanchez, Sr., Wesley Unger, Jorge Gomez, and Sammy Ray Soto. Honorary Pallbearers are Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Jesse Escalona, Sr., DAV chapter 169.

Military honors will be conducted under the auspice of the Victoria County Veterans Council, Victoria, Texas.

Jerry Don Bassham

July 13, 1947 ~ November 30, 2020

Jerry Don Bassham, of Ganado, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on November 30, 2020 at the age of 73. He was born to J.D. and Thelma Bassham on July 13, 1947 in Velasco, Texas and moved to Ganado in 1957 where he attended school and graduated with the class of 1966. Having been Jr. High sweethearts, he and his wife of 55+ years, Faye Freeman Bassham resided and raised their two children, Beverly Bassham Poulton and Jerry Don Bassham, ll in Ganado. He owned and operated Jerry's Body Repair and Auto from 1967 to 2015 specializing in Antique and Classic Restorations until his health forced him to close the family business. Jerry loved our Lord, family, serving others, playing games, football, baseball, golf, drag racing, old cars, camping and life in general. Having been diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in January 2016, he then became a successful lung transplant recipient on November 3 of the same year. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Ray and Harold Bassham. He is survived by: his wife, Faye; daughter Beverly Poulton (Paul),Son, Don Bassham (Denise); 6 grandchildren: Eric Poulton (Denise ); Jacob Poulton (Naomi); Caitlin Poulton Hyde (Austen); Jordon Bassham (Erika); Bailee Bassham (Trace) and Brady Bassham. 3 Great Grandchildren: Harper and Kennedy Poulton and Camryn Hyde. Brother, Bill Bassham (Gladys); numerous nephews and nieces and his angel donor's family. Jerry's celebration of life will be held this Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Edna, Texas. Visitation is at 10:00 am and Memorial Service at 11:00 am with Bro. Robert Krause officiating. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that gifts be made in Jerry's honor to either: U.T. Health- PO Box 1321, Houston, Tx 77251-1321 or giving.uth.edu/memorial; First Baptist Church of Edna or donor's charity of choice.

Michelle Nona Benavides

Michelle Nona Benavides, 60, passed away on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018. She was born on April 14, 1957 in Woodriver, Ill. to Otis Edward Cox and Wanda A. Ingold Cox.

Michelle is survived by her husband of 34 years, Alfred Benavides; daughters Deborah Sublett and Marissa Galvan (Albert); son Kevin Benavides (Kayla); grandchildren Jacob Benavides, Caleb Hinton, Allana Sublett, Jeffrey Sublett Jr., Nathan Garza, Shiloh Benavides, Elijah Benavides, Nalanie Galvan and Nicolas Delgado; sisters Reva Garris, Cheryl Denton and Carolyn Parker; brothers Robert Vandalia, Gregory Cox, Michael Cox, and Steven Cox.

Michelle is preceeded in death by her parents and brother Raymond Vandalia.

Michelle worked for Ganado ISD for 16 years as the transportation director. She has many friends and “kids” who loved her. She will be dearly missed by all.

There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, March 3 at the Ganado ISD cafeteria from 1 to 4 p.m.

Joyce Laree Schoonover Bernal

Joyce Laree Schoonover Bernal, of Lolita, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017. She was born on May 7, 1961 in Ganado to Willard Henry Schoonover and the late Mary Ann Bruce Schoonover.

Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.

Joyce is survived by her father, Willard Henry Schoonover; daughter, Rachael Baker; son, Michael Villarreal (Kristen); sisters, Judy Lopez (Lupe), Mary Greer (Shannon), and Marla Parchman (Terry); brother, Willard Schoonover; grandchildren, Conner, Kaylee, Cohen, Dallas, Dylan, and Emma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joyce is preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Schoonover.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4, in the First Baptist Church of Lolita. Burial to follow at Red Bluff Cemetery in Lolita. Rev. Gary Thedford will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Lolita, 87 Stegall St., Lolita, Texas 77971.

Dorothy Laware Bonvenudo

 Dorothy Laware Kendrick Bonvenudo, 70, of Houston, formerly of Edna, died Feb. 22, 2018. She was born on Aug. 20, 1947 to  Cladie Ray Kendrick and Gladys Green.

Laware graduated from Edna High School.

She is survived by her husband, David Bonvenuto of Houston and mother, Gladys Green of Edna.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cladie Ray Kendrick, and step-father Basil Green.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the donor’s choice.

William Brook Dies At Home in Logansport

Logansport, Oct. 18 (Special)--William Gilbert Brook, 95 years old, one of the few local surviving Confederate veterans, passed away Wednesday morning at the home he has occupied since the close of the Civil war. Death was due to the infirmities of old age and to an automobile accident sustained two years ago which left him a helpless cripple.

He was born September 1, 1837 at Oglethorpe, Ga., and his parents moved to Jackson county, Texas, when he was one year old. When was was declared between the sates he enlisted in the Confederate army, engaging in 14 battles among them the battle of Shiloh and the siege of Vicksburg. After the surrender he settled in Logansport and married Miss Mattie Hosey. Of this union 10 children were born, six of whom survived. They are: one daughter, Mrs. Frank Hayes of Logansport and five sons, Dorwood Brook of Shreveport, Dillard Brook of Center, Preston Brook of San Antonio, W. H. Brook of Joaquin and C. L. Brook of Brownsville, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted from the family home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning by the Rev. George Fox. assisted by the Rev. J. E. Pickering and the Rev. L. S. Evans. Interment will be in Brookland cemetery.

Donald E. Browning

Donald E. Browning, 77, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, January 7, 2018 in Houston, Texas.

Donald was born on October 25, 1940 in Edna to the late S.C. and Esther Browning.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Nan. E. Browning of Lolita, his son and daughter -in-law, John Clinton Browning and Susan of San Marcos; daughter, Tammy Browning Deyton of Beaumont; five granddaughters, Morgan Elizabeth and her husband Alex Lundgren, Rebekah, Alexis, and Pauline; brothers, Richard Browning of Edna and John Browning of Lumberton; sister and brother-in-law Joyce Bennet and Harold of Edna; brother-in-law Jim Rector of New Braunfels; sister-in-law Bonnie Browning of Victoria; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his brothers, James Browning and Paul Browning and his precious sister-in-law.

Donald served in the U.S. Army before his service as a Texas State Trooper and a locomotive engineer with Union Pacific Railroad, from which he retired after driving trains for 25 years. He resided in Jackson County the majority of his life and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Lolita and the Texas Sheriff’s Association. He was also a member of the Wharton Masonic Lodge since 1969.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lolita.

Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik~Edna Funeral Home, 361-782-2152.

Louise Browning

Louise Julia Cernota Browning, of Edna, went to be with her Heavenly Father on the morning of Thursday, October 5, 2017, with her loving family by her side. She was born on July 28, 1936 in Midfield, Texas to the late Emil Louis Cernota and Julia Frances Macha Cernota.

Louise grew up in Ganado, she studied to be a surgery tech and worked in the operating room for many years at the Ganado and Edna hospitals. She also worked as a nurse at the nursing homes. Louise was full of life and was always ready to go on an adventure – work or fun. She loved her grandchildren, genealogy, sewing, quilting, traveling, and sitting around the table drinking coffee with family and friends, she never met a stranger. She also attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Edna. Louise was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.

Louise is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Richard E. Browning of Edna; daughter, Anna Louise Browning Arnold and her husband Michael; son, Bradford Lee Browning and his wife Cathy; sister, Evelyn Tegeler and her husband Wilfred; her five grandchildren, Katrina Lane and her husband Mark, Justin Browning and his wife Lisa, Kelley Browning, Denae Hajovsky, and Dylan Arnold; eight great-grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews; and numerous wonderful friends and family.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel of Edna. Rev. Paul Keiser will be officiating. Burial to follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna.

Tvan B. Bryant

Tvan B. Bryant passed away April 22, 2017 at the age of 84. He was born March 7, 1933 in Jackson County to the late William and Annette Bryant.

Tvan served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Estella Bryant; daughters Lagreenlan Bryant, Janice Turner, Annette Bryant, and Yvonne Bryant; sons William Bryant, Tvan Bryant, Jr., Maxwell Bryant, Terrance Bryant and Rodney Turner; sister Willie Mae Hilder; 23 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at 1731 Beck Road East, Inez.

Lillie Bures

Lillie Mary Koudelka Bures, 95, of Ganado, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017. She was born on Friday, Nov. 11, 1921 in Moulton  to Charles and Mary Holub Koudelka. She married Jerome 'Jack' Bures on Feb. 16, 1938 in Ganado and they were blessed with three wonderful children. Lillie was well known in the community for her kolaches and her quilting.

Lillie is survived by her daughter Georgia Wallace; her sons Leroy and his wife Dru Bures, and Larry and his wife Janet Bures. Also her eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters Edwin Koudelka, Evelyn Dodds, Arnita Drastata, Dorothy Seiler, Eugene Koudelka and Genny Pruitt.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Josephine Srubar and granddaughter Debby McCartney.

Visitation was Friday, October 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ganado Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral mass was Saturday, Oct. 21 at Assumption Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with a rosary recited at 9:30 a.m., officiated by Rev. Kirby Hlavaty. Interment followed at Assumption Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jason Cernosek, Nathan Cernosek, Chris Cernosek, Jared Wallace, Kevin Bures and Colton Turner.

Alto Lavern Flagg Butler

A Thursday morning traffic accident seven miles west of Rosenberg claimed the life of Mrs. Taylor Butler, 62, of Edna.

Several of the persons injured in the collision were released from the hospital Friday. These included Mrs. Butler's husband and her mother, Mrs. Florence Flagg, 83, both of Edna.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Butler were thrown to the pavement on impact of the left fender-to-left fender collision and Mrs. Butler was run over and dragged approximately 200 feet by a car driven by U. S. Army Capt. George Sartor of Long Mott. The collision occurred during a heavy rainstorm as the Butlers were returning from Houston where she had been visiting with relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. Butler will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Edna with the Rev. S. H. Jackson, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery with Cook Funeral Home of Edna in charge of arrangements.

Surviving besides her husband and mother are three daughters, Mrs. Leoma Arkadie, Mrs. Lucella Jones and Mrs. Doris Ellis, all of Houston; a son, Leo Butler of Edna; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Townsend of Houston and Mrs. Geneva Gaskin of Bay City; a brother J. W. Flagg of Danevang and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Butler was born on June 17, 1903 in Old Texana and had been a resident of Jackson County most of her life. Deacons of Shiloh Baptist Church will be pallbearers at the funeral.

Mary Byler

Mary Catherine (Southers) Byler, age 95, passed away August 17, 2017 peacefully at home in Midlothian, TX surrounded by family. She was born April 17, 1922 in Edna, TX to William Albert and Mary Etta Southers. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Willard Byler, daughter Peggy Clark, son-in-law Jim Clark, son Albert Byler, her parents, 3 sisters: Mamie Southers, Maudie Anders and Vera Nell Claybrook, 2 brothers Robert and Leonard Southers.

Mrs. Byler enjoyed camping and fishing with her family and traveling when she could. For 16 years Mary enjoyed driving a school bus for Conroe Independent School District.

Mary is survived by her son James Earl Byler and wife Rhonda of Midlothian, TX; her sister Lola Spree of Edna, TX; grandchildren Dale Clark, Janet Miraglio, Jamie Bartlett, Joseph and Justin Daniels, 4 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held August 22, 2017 at Memory Gardens of Edna, Edna, TX.

Arrangements under the direction of Conroe Funeral Directors, Conroe, TX.
