Marchetta “Marc” Light
Lafon, 74, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2021 at her home in
Roanoke, VA surrounded by family members and while her cat Angel lay
sleeping in her lap. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45
years, Jim, who sold his Volkswagen in 1970 to buy her an engagement
ring. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel Owen and
Mildred Reed Light, and her niece, Autumn Light. Marc’s parents raised
her in a loving home. Family was not only important in her life – her family
WAS her life. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Amanda (Michael
Evans) who cared for her until the end of her life and grandsons Gabriel,
Jacob, and Douglas Shrader who lovingly called her “Nana”. She is
survived by her sister, Madora Lane (Sammy), who shared a bond with Marc
so strong that even death cannot break it. She is also survived by her
brothers Jay Light (Cathy) whom she greatly admired for his fighting
spirit and Dennis Light (Deb) who amazed her with his ability to keep a
sense of humor through the hard times in life. In addition, she is also
survived by her mother-in-law, Jacqueline Lafon of Vinton and
sisters-in-law Pamela Adams (Michael), Patty Sayers (Danny) of Tazewell,
VA and Karen Lafon of Pocahontas, VA. Marc was beautiful inside and out.
Quiet…Gentle…and Kind. She accepted people for who they were and did not
concern herself with what others expected them to be. She loved her cats
(Angel and Sweetie) and grand dogs (Sprout and Reggie) who brought her
great comfort during the hardest of times. She had a special
understanding of life’s difficulties and through multiple cancer
diagnoses over the years, rarely complained. It was because of the many
gifts and talents given to her over the years by her family that she was
able to fight the good fight: the grace of her parents; Jim’s
unconditional love; Amanda’s strength, Madora’s devotion, Jay’s fighting
spirit, Dennis’ lightheartedness and of course lots of hugs and kisses
from Gabriel, Jacob and Douglas. The simple things in life are what made
her the happiest: a Jimmy Buffett song; her grandsons’ artwork taped to
her desk; a trip to the family farm; Savannah’s Bird Girl and a gargoyle
sitting on the fireplace that reminded her of special times spent with
Jim; and topping off the day with a glass of red wine. A better human
being would be hard to find. The family would like to thank Dr. Paul
Richards and the staff of Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Lewis-Gale for their
dedication to providing Marc with the most effective care and treatments
available. The family will receive friends from 9 am until 10 am on
Monday, January 18, 2021 at Oakey’s North Chapel with the celebration of
her life at 10am with Rev. Horace Light officiating. Memorial donations
