Mrs. Rosanna E. Burgess, 89, Floyd County, Va., widow of W. L. Burgess, died Sunday, June 13, 1964, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Samuel Rakes, New Windsor, following an extended illness. She was born in Virginia, a daughter of the late Otey T. and Mary Ann Lester Reed. Her husband died 35 years ago. Surviving in addition to her daughter are nine grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Lola M. Alley, Carthage, VA., and a brother, Abraham T. Reed, Taneytown. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Funeral services were held at the D. D. Hartzler and Sons funeral home, New Windsor, at 2:30 Monday afternoon. The Rev. Dr. E. C. Bixler officiated. Burial was in Burgess Cemetery, Floyd County, VA., Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Minerva Susan Reed, 83, of RFD1, Taneytown, died Saturday at the Hillview House Nursing Howe at Hanover. She was the widow of Abraham T. Reed, and daughter of the lare Elias & Emmaline Bishop Alley. Mrs. Reed is survived by four children, Mrs Posey Raker of Linwood, Miss Zepha Reed of Taneytown, David Reed of Westminster and Willard Reed of Muncie, Ind.; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs Bertha Tyson of Hoke Mill, NC and Mrs Edward Jones of La Harpe, IL. She was a member of the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren.

Zelpha L. Reed, 85, formally of Taneytown (MD), died Monday, Sept 27, 1993, at the Sykesville Eldercare Center, where she was a resident.

Born Jan. 22, 1908 in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Abraham & Minerva Reed.

Surviving are sister Goldie Rakes of Cross Keys, PA; one niece; and four nephews.

A Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Skiles Funeral Home, 136, E. Baltimore St, Taneytown, with the Rev. Victor L. Harner officiating. Burial will be in Sam’s Creek Brethren Cemetery, New Windsor.

Friends may call from noon until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.

1935 Obit: The Times, Westminster, MD, Friday Aug 23, 1935

Funeral services for Elias Reid, near New Windsor, who accidentally drowned near Solomon’s Island on Friday, Aug 16, 1935, were held on Monday morning. The body was removed to the home of the deceased’s sister, Mrs Posie Rake, near New Windsor on Sunday, and services were conducted in Sam’s Creek church. The Rev. George A. Early, Westminster, and Dr. Edward Bixler, New Windsor, officiated. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The pallbearers were: Harman Manahan, Norman Rebert, Cecil Rakes, Smith Englar, Charles Buckingham and Howard Cosnell.

The deceased was aged 22 and recently married Miss Catherine Deardorff, this city, who survives.

BUSHNELL, IL - Austin L. Reed, 92, of Bushnell died at 9:28 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, IL.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Bushnell Cemetery.

BUSHNELL - Austin L. Reed of Bushnell passed away at 9:38 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. He was born Dec. 1, 1916, in Pilot Grove, Hancock County, to Gordon C. and Mary E. (King) Reed. He married Darlene L. Coffman on Feb. 22, 1939, in Kahoka, Mo., she preceded him death on Oct. 19, 1988. He later married Maxine L. Botkin English on Jan. 1, 1998, in Bushnell; she survives. 

Also surviving are one son, Gary (Beverly) Reed of Bushnell; one daughter, Rose Ann Lynn of Galesburg; three stepsons, Jim (Diane) English of Bushnell, Jerry (Phyllis) English of Bushnell, and Kenneth (Carolyn) English of Bushnell; three stepdaughters, Jane Teel of Blandinsville, Joyce (Roger) McCormick of New Philadelphia, and Janice (Clyde) Peters of Cuba; seven grandchildren, Audie Reed of Bushnell, Angie (Brett) Tucker of Fort Collins Colo., Trina Carrillo of Gillette Wyoming, Chris Reed of Bushnell, Cary Reed of Bushnell, Candi Ryan Powell of Ewa Hawaii, and Dusty Rose Helle of Evergreen Colo.; 12 stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded death by his parents, five brothers, a sister and a grandson, John Overstreet Jr. 

He graduated from Elvaston High School. He worked for the TP&W Rail Road for many years, which brought him to Bushnell and later worked for Firestone in Bushnell. He then took a job with Vaughn & Bushnell where he worked 42 years until his retirement. He was in the United States Army and fought in World War II. He was an avid woodworker and loved to bowl. 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home at 11 a.m., where visitation will be on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.; calling hours after 2 p.m. Pastor Trish Chapman will officiate. Burial will be in the Bushnell Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bushnell Rescue Squad.

DALLAS CENTER -- A funeral for William Sherman Reed, 94, of Dallas Center was held June 1, 1985 at the Dunkard Brethren Church at Dallas Center. Mr. Reed died of renal failure at his home on May 28.
Burial was in the Brethren Cemetery at Dallas Center.
Born in Pocahontas County, W.V. on Jan. 7, 1891, he was the son of Creed and Cansada Darnell Reed. He married Mary Jane Jameson on Jan. 17, 1917.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; eight sons, Kyle of Minburn, Elbert and John both of Des Moines, Lloyd of Bethel, Pa., Millard of Manteca, Calif., Ray of Dallas Center, William of Quinter, Kan. and Oty of Montrose, Colo.; three daughters, Fae Kasza of Malta Bend, Mo., Edna Wertz of McClave, Colo., and Ruth Haldeman of Adel; a brother, Charles of Lomax, Ill.; 43 grandchildren and 65 great grandchildren.
