Born on May 24, 1917, he was the son of the late John Dillard & Della Roope Akers. Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Agnes Cox Akers; one daughter, Sylvia C. Owens; and four brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are five sons & daughters-in-law, Charles W. & Carole Akers, Orville F. Jr. & Barbara Akers, both of Dublin, Dillard W. & Sharon Akers of Christiansburg, Randall S. & Deborah Akers of Waynesboro, and Ronald L. & Lisa Akers of Dublin; one daughter, Sandra K. Akers of Dublin; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Mack L. Akers of Pearisburg and James R. Akers of Hillsville; three sisters, Kate Ratcliff and "Bubbles" Turpin, both of Dublin, and Bertha Hancock of Independence; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 29, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. David Lawson officiating. Interment will follow in the Newbern Cemetery in Newbern. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

James is survived by his three sons, Robert L. Cox and wife, Sonya, James Alvin Cox, and Richard Cox and wife, Shelly; five grandchildren, Sarah M. Cox, Alyson T. Cox, Angela Hannah, Michelle Cox, Eddie and Lucas Ball; three great-grandchildren, Autumn and Kieley Hannah and Toby Campellone; as well as his step-daughters, Glenna C. Hungate and husband, Darrell, Regina C. Ball and husband, Jeff, and Rebecca C. Lawrence and husband, Roger; two brothers, Roger D. Cox and wife, Peggy and Exel Lakewood Cox and wife, Betty; sister, Mardell Cox; numerous nieces and nephews; and his 'lil buddy, Oscar. James was a man who worked hard and always provided for his family. He loved to serve his church and his community. He was a long-time member of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren. James especially loved to travel and experience the world. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the people who made his transition easy. Survivors include a daughter, Mardell Cox of Floyd; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Myrtha Cox, Roger and Peggy Cox of Salem, Exel Lakewood and Betty Cox of Floyd; sister, Ersie Phillips of Floyd; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 2004 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elbert Lee Naff, Rev. Kenny Wurzburger, Rev. Michael Pugh and Rev. Richard Thomas officiating. He lived in Virginia until moving to Illinois in 1970 where he lived with Mr. & Mrs. George C. Potter. He moved to Sprucewood Health Care Center in 1994. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Roy in infancy, Charles Martin Cox and William Moten Cox. Survivors include one brother, Hassel Warren Cox of Abingdon, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Zola) Layman, Assiniboia, SK Canada, Mrs. Harold (Ruby) Mohr of Norman, Ill., Mrs. Kate King of Springfield, Ill.; one half-sister, Mrs. George (Lucille) Potter of Macomb, Ill. He was a former employee of Roanoke Electric Steel and had many fond memories of his association with his fellow co-workers. He loved to hunt and fish, and it was a pleasure to fellowship with his friends, for he felt as they were also his family. Surviving are his wife, Ann M. Cox of Shawsville; a son and four daughters and their spouses, Elizabeth Ann and Eddie Lawson of Shawsville, Linda Darnell Hilton of Blacksburg, Dwayne and Stephanie Cox of Shawsville, Missy R. Mavis Corrine Cox, 83, of Willis, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. She was born on May 22, 1937, to the late Clova Bolt Dalton. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Warren "Bud" Cox; granddaughter, Misty Jo Cox; brother, Venston Dalton; and sisters, Mabel Boyd and Lareda Quesenberry. "Rean" was the oldest of nine siblings. She was born and raised in the Buffalo Mountain community, which she dearly loved. She was a loving wife and devoted mother to her children. When asked what made her happy, she said "Family". Rean also opened up her home and heart to her many extended family and friends throughout her life. Welcoming everyone with kindness, open arms and a wonderful smile, those moments will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Warren "Bo" (Ann), Lloyd (Becky), Christine (John) Benson, and Eldon (Leslie); five grandchildren, Angie (Matt), Travis (Samantha), Jessica (Devon), Amanda, and Michael (Amie); 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Norman Dalton, William Dalton, Earl Dalton, and Franklin Dalton; and sister, Wanda Linkous.
