Charlottesville, VA. 2009 Obit: Published
in the Charlottesville Daily Progress on 5/12/2009 (src: Find A Grave) Educator. Assistant Public School System
Superintendent. Dr. Marvin Cecil Sutphin, 94, of Westminster
Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, Charlottesville, died Saturday, May 9, 2009. He was born March 23, 1915, in Carroll County, the
son of the late Bud Sutphin and Cora Kemp Sutphin. He was also preceded in
death by his wife, Anna Lee Fauver Sutphin. He was
the last survivor of his immediate family. He leaves behind several special and steadfast
friends, Bob and Pat Hart, Kathie and Taylor Beard, and Mary Jane Morris; a
nephew, Graylin Fauver;
and niece, Jeannette Hull. He attended Presbyterian Junior College from 1933
until 1935 and graduated from Radford College in 1938 with a BS Degree. In
1952, he earned a Master of Science Degree from VPI and in 1967 an Education
Doctorate in Administration from the University of Virginia. Dr. Sutphin retired June 30, 1977, after 40 years
of service with the Charlottesville Public School System as Assistant
Superintendent for Business and Finance. An interesting facet of Dr. Sutphin's life was
highlighted in the February 1974 edition of the Focus of the Charlottesville
Public Schools which is quoted here: "Open education, schools without
walls, individualized and group instruction, Marvin Sutphin has tried them
all in a one-room school house where he taught 35
children in seven grades back in the 1930's. At that time, "Doc
Marv" was fresh out of Presbyterian Junior College and fortified with
two years of teacher preparation. Not one to feel he had learned "it
all"; however, he furthered his education through evening classes and
summer sessions. A Bachelor of Arts from Radford College and a Master's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute
resulted from concerned tenacity. Following the "Little Red School House"
stint, he taught math and science on the secondary level and became known as
"Coach Sutphin" extracurricular assignments included baseball,
basketball (boys and girls), track (boys and girls), and softball (girls). His vantage point as an educator changed from
class teacher to principal to superintendent over a 15-year period,
interrupted by a five year "hitch" in the service. With 35 for a
draft number, Sutphin's name was called shortly after Pearl Harbor. He spent
most of the five years assigned to United States Army Field Artillery Unit
472d in the South Pacific where he rose to the rank of Major. Until "Mr." Sutphin came to the
University of Virginia for an earned Doctorate in Education, Southwest
Virginia had been his home. In his mountainous area where much of the country
remains beautifully untouched by metropolitan clutter and where the natives
say "eyece" for ice and call a paper bag
a "poke," our Assistant Superintendent learned the joys of outdoor
recreation and the satisfaction of being a "do-it-yourself" man.
Many of his boyhood experiences directed Marvin toward full blown,
honest-to-goodness hobbies. When he sinks a fishing line or casts a fly rod,
the fisherman lands a "mess". As a hunter he holds the reputation
of being a "sharpshooter. (One of his few miscalculated aims with a gun
brought injury to a big toe; an incident which he jokingly uses as an example
of "The Wisdom of Precision" or Be Careful Where You Aim.") A
basement workshop served as another haven from the cares of the world. Marvin
refinished, designed and constructed furniture and other household items at
his previous home on Concord Drive, Charlottesville. Dr. Sutphin began his service in the
Charlottesville schools as principal of McGuffey in 1963, the year the school housed a double shift of eighth graders. Before the
year terminated, he also assisted in central office as personnel officer,
payroll officer, and director of the budget. All of these duties he performed
in a central office equipped with one hand operated adding machine, one hand
cranked mimeographing machine, several manual typewriters, and a few
secretaries. Never frustrated when working against adds, he describes that
year as "one of the most interesting" in his educational
career." Graveside funeral services were held 2pm
Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Thornrose Cemetery in
Staunton, with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is handling the
arrangements. 2009 Burial: Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, VA. |
