In Floyd County, VA, at few days since Ambrose Cox entered the house of Mr. Moore, his brother-in-law, and shot him dead with a rifle. The cause of the murder was the division of a tract of land of Cox’s father, by which Moore obtained half, which his slayer swore he would never occupy.”

(src: Find A Grave) Ruth Cox Wade (sometimes called Rutha) was the wife of John W. Wade and the daughter of Luke Cox. After her husband was killed in the Civil War, She never remarried but devoted herself to rearing their three children, Mary Elizabeth Wade (m. Benjamin Hylton), Eli Wade, and John Walter Wade. The marker at Greasy Creek is a memorial, not a grave marker. Ruth Cox Wade is actually buried in the Wade/Phillips Cemetery located on State Road 787 In Indian Valley in Floyd County, VA. Her grave is on the crest of a hill on the south side of Rt. 787 in front of the new Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church.  Her husband John W. Wade is no doubt buried in a mass grave near Spotsylvania, Virginia, near the place he was killed. However, there is a memorial to him at Greasy Creek Church. also. The grave photo to the left is her actual grave. These photos were provided by her great granddaughter Reva Wade Weeks and her great-great granddaughter Carolyn Keith Shockley.
