Mamie Ayers Reed, formerly of Mt. Holly, N.C. departed this life
at CMC Pineville on July 26, 2011. Mamie was born on May 26, 1920. in
Roanoke, Va., the daughter of Mr. Okie Smith Ayers and Mrs. Oakey Mae
Kegley Ayers. Mamie was one of eight children. Mamie is the widow of U.
Dale Reed, a Charlotte chiropractor at his death. Preceding Mamie in
death are her sisters, Nellie Burnett (and husband, Robert), of
Lynchburg, Va., Beatrice Fleshman (and husband, Howard), of Roanoke, Va.,
Esther Marie Ayers Hartman (and husband, John L. "Red" Hartman
Jr.); her brothers, Larrie D. Ayers, of San Diego, Calif., Percy M.
Ayers, C. Douglas Ayers (and wife, Beverly) and Wesley O. Ayers, all of
Roanoke, Va. Mamie is survived by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Ayers, of
San Diego, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Zelma (Pat) Ayers, of Roanoke, Va.
Also surviving are nephews, Kenneth Burnett and wife, Gwenne, of
Lancaster, Pa., Kevin Ayers and wife, Charmane, of Chattanooga, Tenn.,
and Charles Ayers and wife, Lisa, of Charlotte, N.C.; nieces, Melanie
Ayers, of Roanoke, Va. and Barbara Atherton, of San Diego, Calif.; and
great-nephews, Preston Douglas Ayers, of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Owen
Moore Ayers (tadpole), of Richmond, Va.
Mamie was no stranger to hard work. While her late husband attended
Chiropractic College in Chicago, Mamie worked for the railroad and once
they relocated to Charlotte to open the chiropractic office on East
Boulevard, Mamie worked for IBM and finished her working career with
American & Efird in Mt. Holly, N.C. Her career with A&E spanned
33 years and she retired in 1986 as Plant Manager
Mamie was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles and word games. Among
her other interests were a cup of hot coffee all day long and her many
friends and former colleagues from A&E. Mamie loved her home in Mt.
Holly, her neighbors and friends. We often reminisced about her home
after she moved to Regency Retirement Village in Charlotte, N.C.
Mamie was erudite and lucid late into life and continued to drive until
she was 89 years of age. Her automobile was a great sense of independence
for her and those who know Mamie know she embodied,
"independence"! Regardless of her independence, she considered
her family, friends, former colleagues and neighbors as integral partners
in her life. She was loved by all who met her and will truly be missed.
The family wishes to thank her neighbors for their support and love of
Mamie, the staff and personnel of Regency Retirement Village in
Charlotte, N.C. for making her comfortable and taking care of her in her
last year there, and finally to the staff of doctors and nurses at CMC
Pineville for their efforts to assist Mamie in her final days and the
compassionate care in her last hours.
According to Mamie's wishes, she will be cremated and there will be a
gathering of friends and family on Friday, July 29, 2011, from 2 to 4
p.m. at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28210
adjacent to Regency Retirement Village and CMC Pineville.
