Funeral Rites of Mrs. Lorena Nunn Akers
Mrs. Lorena Nunn Akers, wife of J M Akers, of Peak Creek was laid to rest in the family graveyard here Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. She lived here most of her life. She was 69 years old. Survivors are her husband, two sons, Albert and Arnold and one daughter, Maggie; two brothers, Preston and Andrew Nunn, and one sister, Mrs. Dove Simpkins. She has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for 48 years. She was a devoted Mother and Wife and leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

A flagman on a road building project was killed by the wheels of the truck he was directing yesterday afternoon.

Robert B. Akers, 38, State Highway Department employee for the past three years, died enroute to a Pulaski hospital. He had lived at Pulaski, Route 3. Pulaski Sheriff R. Summers said, the accident occurred on State Rt. 637, near Dublin at 1:45 p.m. A crew of 10 to 12 men had been engaged in open up a ditch along the side of the road. Following behind the heavy equipment used to open the ditch was the regulation dump type truck driven by R.C. Stratton which collected the soil and debris from the opened ditch. Akers job was to direct highway traffic around the project and to direct the loaded trucks. Summers said the truck had just been loaded when Akers signaled for the driver to back. Almost immediately he fell to the ground and the driver unable to see him, passed over Akers left side, breaking his arm and causing internal injuries. Dr. C.G. Fox, Pulaski County Medical Examiner, said an autopsy performed in Roanoke made it certain that death was due to the accident and not to a sudden heart attack or stroke. Summers said co-workers did not see Akers when he fell and whether he tripped over an object in the road is unknown. The accident took place on a hard surface portion of the highway.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary LaRue Akers, two sons, Earl E. Akers and Robert R. Akers, Jr, both Pulaski; two daughters, Edith June Akers and Wanda Diane Akers, both of Pulaski; his mother, Mrs. Audie Akers, Radford; two brothers, Coy Akers and Charles Akers, both of Pulaski; four sisters, Mrs. Sadie Turpin and Miss Louise Akers, both of Radford; Mrs. Callie Roseberry, Dublin and Mrs. Reba Bratton, Pulaski. The body was taken to the Strickler Funeral Home, Pulaski. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Charlie Bruce "Bootsie" Akers, 84, of Pulaski, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 28, 2014 in the Pulaski Health & Rehab Center.

He was the son of the late Garnie B. Akers and Audie Taylor Akers of Pulaski. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Charlie Wayne Akers and Michael Anthony Akers, also of Pulaski, Va., and by two brothers and four sisters. He was retired from Xaloy, Inc. after 26 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korea Conflict.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Betty Quesenberry Akers; son, Gary Lee Akers Sr.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 2 at noon from the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dales Akers and the Rev. Wilfred Overton officiating. Burial will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, Va., with full military honors from Pulaski VFW Post #1184.

Visitation will be Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service hour.

COEBURN, Va. - Sidney Johnson Akers, 91, died in a Norton Hospital at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday following a long illness.

Survivors include two sons, Claude and George Akers, both of Coeburn; three daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Nixon, Wise, Va., Mrs. Lena Rucker, Norton, Va., Mrs. Vadie Beverly, Kingsport; 22 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday at Mary's Chapel Church, Coeburn, with Rev. Robert Brickey and Rev. Edgar Baltimore officiating. Burial will follow in the Mills Cemetery in Coeburn.

The body was taken to the home of a son, Claude Akers, Thursday evening.

Lamathie Akers Goodrich, 77, of Finksburg, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at her daughter's home in Finksburg. 

Born May 19, 1923, in Coeburn, Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Bruce and Thelma E. Ramey Akers. 

After 25 years she retired from Pantry Pride, as a department manager. 

Surviving are children Donna Redmon of Westminster, Willard Reabold Jr. of Jim Thorpe, Pa., Lynn Abel of Pasadena, and Wendy Lambertson of Finksburg; five sisters; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loring Byers Funeral Directors Inc., 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown, with the Rev. John Morrell, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Westminster officiating. Interment will be private. 

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157.

Peggy Akers Barth, 70, of Odenton, died of cancer Nov. 26 at her home after a long illness.

Mrs. Barth was born Aug. 18, 1930, and raised in Norton, Va., and moved to Baltimore in 1944. She was married in 1951 to George C. Barth Sr., who is now deceased. 

She lived in Baltimore until moving to Millersville in 1959 and then moved in with her son in Odenton in 1993. 

Mrs. Barth was a homemaker and assistant director at Wee Lad and Lassies Day Care Center in Arnold. She was also an active member in Severna Park Baptist Church for more than 36 years. Her interests included bowling and the Baltimore Orioles. 

Surviving are her son, George C. Barth Jr. of Odenton; two daughters, Sheila S. Zengler of Pasadena and Shirley J. Allgood of Montgomery, Ala.; four sisters, Anita Duran of Shrewsbury, Pa., Betty Battersby of Garner, N.C., Nancy Miller of Reston, Va., and Bobby Boutwell of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great grandson. She was the sister of the late LaMathie Goodrich. 

Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 tonight at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be at noon tomorrow at Severna Park Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. 

Donations may be made to the church renovation fund in her name, 506 Benfield Road, Severna Park, MD 21146.

LUCILE "CRICKET" AKERS
FLOYD-Lucile “Cricket” Akers,  age 90, formerly of New Market, passed away Sunday, February 20, 2005.  She was pre-deceased by her husband, Elbert J. “Pap” Akers, her parents, Rufus and Bertie Akers, and three siblings, brothers, Ray and Fred Akers and sister, BeBe Showalter.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ada Lee and Harmon Williams of Floyd; three grandchildren and spouses: Sandra and Donny Thompson, of Roanoke, Larry and Cathy Williams, of Boones Mill, and Carol Ann and Tony Bowman, of Pembroke; five great-grandchildren and spouses: Donna and Charles Laurens, of Virginia Beach,  Dwayne and Carol Thompson, of Floyd, Jason and Kim Hall, of Radford, Sebastian Brooks, of Blacksburg,  and Lorne Bowman, of Pembroke;  three great-great grandchildren, Chelsea, Charlie and Chandler Laurens, of Virginia Beach; three sisters-in-law, Janice May, of Shenandoah, Jeanette Akers, of Christiansburg; and Irene Vest, of Floyd; special friends, Sandy and Sandra Lucas, of Roanoke; and Willie and Janet Bowles, of Callaway;  many nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral service was  held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Pigg River Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Junior Conner officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery. Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

Eula A. Reynolds, 92, of Roanoke, Va., cherished mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend was called home peacefully to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 17, 2009. Eula was born on June 14, 1917, into a loving family in Christiansburg, Va., and worked for many years at Miller's Drug Store as the manager and bookkeeper until retiring. After marrying the Reverend Scott Reynolds, she moved to Roanoke and assisted him as he served as pastor for many Methodist churches throughout the area. Eula was a faithful and devoted member of the Williamson Road Church of the Brethren and served as a deacon for many years. She loved the Lord and found comfort in Him throughout her life. She leaves behind many church friends whose presence enriched her life and brought her comfort. Eula had a wonderful sense of humor and a special presence about her, which drew people into her life. She will be truly missed by her devoted family, dear friends, and anyone whose life she touched. Her greatest joy was her devoted son, Carlton, who amazed her with his athletic talents, especially in football, and served as her source of loving enjoyment and dedication throughout her lifetime. It has been said that she was a small lady who cast a giant shadow.

Eula was preceded in death by her mother, Zora Hassie Akers; father, Guy Taylor Akers; husband, the Reverend Scott Lanier Reynolds; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby Booth and husband, James, of Christiansburg, Va., Nellie Sprowl and husband, Dale, of Christiansburg, Va., and Dr. Clyde Kramer, of Christiansburg, Va.; and nephew, Bruce Kramer, of Charlotte, N.C. Eula is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Carlton Bowyer and wife, Tammy, of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandson, Barry Bowyer and his wife, Christina Joy, and their daughter, Madison Brie, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and granddaughter, Mary-Margaret Monk and her husband, Dr. Brian Monk, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; sister, Glenna Kramer, of Christiansburg, Va.; stepdaughter, Nancy Lynn and husband, Barry Brown, of Radford, Va.; two nieces, Gerlene Humphrey and Emogene Bradford, of Roanoke, Va. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel with Pastor Michael Huffaker officiating. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
