Former Resident Called By Death

Hettie Belle Reed was born near Floyd, Virginia, February 2, 1891. She came to Nebraska with her parents in 1904 and they located on a farm near Auburn. The deceased was united in marriage to George Nincehelser, July 20, 1910, and shortly afterward moved to Dickerson county, Kansas and located near Navarre, which place remained her home until she passed away at the age of 41 years, and 4 days.

Mrs. Nincehelser is survived by her husband and five children, Verle, Alan, Harland, Merlin I and an infant daughter, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elias Reed of Topeka, Kan. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters, Quincy Reed and Thos. Reed of Galesburg, Kan., Eugia Reed of Yale, Iowa, Mrs. Alda Kauffman and Mrs. Marjorie Foster, both of Topeka. She united with the church while yet a child and had always lived a Christian Life. She served in various capacities in the church Sunday school and Aid society. She is remembered here as a good woman and one worthy of the respect in which she was always held.

Harold Eugene Reed, 90, of Urbandale passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Urbandale Healthcare Center in Urbandale, Iowa.

Harold Eugene Reed, son of Harold and Evie (Lester) Reed was born October 7, 1924 in Floyd County, Virginia.

On August 13, 1945, Harold was united in marriage to Betty Jo Martz. 

In his spare time, Harold enjoyed fixing things, whether it was stuff around the house or cars in the garage. He also loved to set aside time after work and visit with people in the hospital.

Harold is survived by his son: Kenneth; brother: Lester (Annamae) Reed; Nephews: Dave and Greig Reed; and numerous other nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

Harold was preceded by his wife: Betty Jo Reed; Parents: Harold and Evie Reed; and sister: Bernice Rupp.

She was a graduate of National Business College and retired from the Roanoke City School System. Marieta volunteered with several local organizations and was a member of Central Church of the Brethren for over 60 years, serving at one point as church secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Faith Sanger; her husband, Elias Bentley Reed; and her brother, Garnet Earl Sanger.

Surviving are her son, Elias B. "Benny" and wife Joanne Reed of Vinton; grandchildren, Amy Beecher and her husband Grant of Salem, Julie Hare and her husband Matt of Vinton, and David Reed of Vinton; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Tabitha, Bethany Beecher, and Savannah Hare. Also surviving are several nephews and many friends.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 6, at Oakeys North Chapel with Pastor Tim Harvey and Rev. Norman Harsh officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakeys North Chapel, Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Central Church of the Brethren, 416 Church Ave. Roanoke , Va. 24016. Rev Douglas E. Reed, 85, of Floyd, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2008, following a long illness. He was a retired pastor of Parkway Church of the Brethren on Buffalo Mountain Road in Floyd County, which he served between 1974 until 1997. During that period, he was active in both church and community affairs, including the Floyd Ruritan Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also retired from the Floyd Post Office in July 1982 with 36 years of service, including nine years as a post office clerk and 27 years as a rural route mail carrier. During World War II, he was a member of Merrill's Marauders, a unit of Army volunteers sent behind enemy lines in Burma to destroy Japanese supply lines and communications. According to the unit's web site, "no other American force anywhere had marched as far, fought as continuously or had to display such endurance as the swift-moving, hard-hitting foot soldiers of Merrill's Marauders." Until recent years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent many days with family and friends on Claytor Lake. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Twila Reed I of Floyd; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney M. and Sherry Reed and Robert E. and Debbie Reed, all of Floyd; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Don Johnson, of Floyd; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin G. and Lynette Reed, of Christiansburg; sisters, Frances Cannaday, of Christiansburg, and Patsy Baltz, of Richmond; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with the Rev. Vinton Quesenberry and the Rev. Danny Gilley officiating. Interment will follow at Topeco Cemetery with Military Rites by Floyd VFW Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127. Marvin Gray Reed, 83, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009. Marvin was born on July 30, 1925.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harley E. Reed; his mother, Lilly Myers Reed; his sisters, Dorothy Crismond, Juliette Hienline; and a brother, Douglas Reed.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Lynette Taylor Reed; his sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas G. Reed, Donald L. Reed and Diana, Michael T. Reed and Debby; sisters, Patsy R. Baltz, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Francis R. Cannaday, of Christiansburg.

Pawpaw was the "Good Old Boy" to his grandchildren, Aaron Reed, of Roanoke, Amber Reed, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Caleb Reed, of Christiansburg, Matthew, Wyatt, Autumn, and Faith Reed, all of Elliston.

Also surviving are close friends, Bettie Maxey, Tommy Myers, Harold Akers, Jimmy Blount, and Zeke Epperly, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marvin was a veteran of the United States Navy serving on the USS Orestes in the South Pacific. He served as an active member with the Christiansburg Fire Department for 30 years. He was also a 50 year member of Kazim Shriners, a member of the Montgomery County Game and Fish Club, Christiansburg Hunting Club and a Masonic Veteran of McDaniel Lodge #86 AM&FM.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Claytor Lake wing of Heritage Hall for the special care they received. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2009, at The Horne Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday March 1, 2009, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. David Goodpasture and the Rev. Brian Seagle officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. Robert Burger Kelly, 80, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 18, 2010. A lifelong resident of the Mill Creek community in Botetourt County, Va. Burger was a dairy farmer, a master woodcrafter, a phenomenal cook, and a terrific father, grandfather, and great grandfather. 

He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Eunice Reed Kelly; his parents, Robert Dickey and Martha Stevens Kelly; his sister, Nancy Kelly; and a brother, Jimmy Kelly. 
Burger is survived by his children and their spouses, Diane Kelly, of Roanoke, Reed and Tracy Kelly, of Cloverdale, Dora and Robin Sprinkel, of Hinesville, Ga., Terri and Richard Gregory, of Roanoke, and Tony and Tammy Kelly, of Fincastle. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Bobby Sprinkel, Amanda Tuck, Shannon Hickey, Nathan Russell, Alex Russell, Tyler Kelly, Kendyl Kelly, and Zachery Kelly, and seven great-grandchildren, Emily Hickey, Mason Sprinkel, Madison Tuck, Lorelia Sprinkel, Autumn Russell, Ephraim Sprinkel, and Sydney Tuck. Burger is also survived by two brothers and their spouses, Rex and Gay Kelly, of Buchanan, and Dickey and Carol Kelly, of Fincastle. 
Burger had a full life and took great pleasure in simple things. In addition to the accomplishment of raising his family, he was proud of having participated in hurricane rebuilding efforts in Franklin, La.; serving as a part of "the chain gang" at Lord Botetourt High School football games for 36 years; and volunteering as record-keeper for Mill Creek Cemetery for more than 40 years. 

In retirement, when the cows no longer had to be milked twice a day, he enjoyed attending sporting events of any kind or watching them on his big-screen television, visiting with his friends every day at Greenwood Restaurant, and crafting beautiful furniture. When the large lumber became too heavy for him to lift, he began building child-sized and doll-sized furniture, wooden toys, and clocks. He always had plans for his next project but never minded having to change his plans because a child or grandchild "needed something built." 

The family will receive friends at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2010, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. J. Randolph Daniels and the Rev. Fred Elsworth officiating with burial to follow in Mill Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mill Creek Cemetery, 15973 Lee Hwy., Buchanan, Va. 24066 or to a charity of your choice. Russel M. Reed, 64, of Buchanan, departed this life for heaven on Tuesday, May 14, 1996. 

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Reed; sons, Daryl Reed, Doug Reed, and Darren Reed; daughters, Cathy Dickerson and Karen Thrasher; his children-in-law, Charlene, J ay, Dawn, Marisa; grandchildren, Daniel, Jason, Brooke, David, Tyree, Josh, Megan, Brittany and Alex; a special friend, Warren Plaster. Also surviving include his mother, Elva Reed; brother, Orin Reed; sisters, Eunice Kelly, Margaret Campbell and Bernice Haymaker. 

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 1996 at the Mill Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Orin Lester Reed, 76, of Roanoke, left this world for eternal rest on May 25, 2012.

He was preceded by his parents, Horace and Elva Reed; sister and brother-in-law, Eunice and Burger Kelly; a brother, Russell Reed and a brother-in-law, Allen Campbell.

Surviving Orin is his loving wife and best friend, Pat Keller-Reed; three children, Pam Kearney (Chris), of Burke, Tambra Wrenn, (Chris) of Roanoke and son, Damon Reed (Fawn) of Troutville; a stepdaughter, Glenda Keller and by his children's mother, Jean Simpson; five grandchildren, Patrick and Brian Kearney, Jenna Wrenn, Michael and Caelen Reed and an unofficially "adopted" granddaughter, Madison Yencha. Also surviving are his sister, Bernice Haymaker (Don) of Las Vegas, Margaret Campbell of Eagle Rock; and sister-in-law, Mary Sue Reed of Salem; numerous nieces; nephews; cousins; golfing buddies; and church family at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church.

Orin had a special love for sports. He was a football and baseball coach for the sandlot teams, along with being a high school and college official for 25 years. He was voted high school referee of the year in 1976 and also was a goal judge for the Roanoke Express for several years. One of Orin's last request was to say goodbye to all the guys he came in contact with at the Hanging Rock Country Club and to tell them he loved them all " like a brother".

Orin retired from his own business in 1996 after having spent most of his adult life in the copy machine business.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, Orin's wishes were that donations be made to the Rosalind Hills Baptist Church building fund or the food pantry. Friend may visit with the family Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating Orin's life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2012 in Rosalind Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Smith officiating. Esther Dulaney Reed, 94, beloved mother and grandmother of Riner, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Riner, Va. She was born on March 7, 1916, to the late Harrison and Vina Akers Dulaney in the White Rock community of Floyd County.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Benny Reed, Jean Altizer, and infant daughter; great-grandson, Dennis Smith; brothers, Herman, Sherman, Ray and Guy Dulaney; and sisters, Ruth DeHart, Dot Crews and Stella Dulaney.

She was a member of the Riner Grace Brethren Church and was well-known for her needlecraft work, crocheting and quilting.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bessie and Lee Altizer Jr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Quinter and Dorothy Reed, of New Paris, Ind., and Lowell and Joyce Reed, of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Paul Altizer, Debi Smith, Kay Gallimore, Dail Altizer, Karen Minnick, Ben Reed, Teresa Marquart, Lisa Kenley, Mark Altizer, Toni Miller, Dawn Paul and Holly Hudgins; 29 greatgrandchildren; two great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special lifetime friend, Irene Akers Nixon, of Christiansburg.

A special thanks to the Good Samaritan Hospice for all the love and care of our mother.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011, at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Horne Funeral Chapel with interment following at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. Pastor James Burke will officiate. The family is being served by Horne Funeral Service, Christiansburg.

Hayes Reed, 88, died Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Hospice Kavanagh House in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 at Dunkard Brethren Church in Dallas Center with burial to follow at Brethren Cemetery.

Hayes was born and raised in Floyd County, Virginia. In 1947 he met Mary Byfield and they were married in 1948 in Modesto, California where they made their home for 58 years. Hayes was a Real Estate Broker in Modesto, but his passion was serving as an Elder for the Pleasant Home congregation of the Dunkard Brethren Church for over 50 years. He served as chairman of the board of directors for the Torreon Navajo Mission in New Mexico as well many other boards within the Dunkard Brethren Church. During his 63 years of ministry, he held over 50 revivals throughout the United States. Hayes enjoyed singing and listening to music, especially Gospel quartets.

Hayes is survived by his loving wife, Mary, his children Gloria (Gale) Haldeman of Dallas Center and Gary (Michelle) Reed of Clovis, CA, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Visitation begins after 1 p.m. Tuesday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions can be made to Dunkard Brethren Church or Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House in West Des Moines.

Hayes was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, and will be greatly missed by all.

Frank H. Reed, age 85. of Riner. died Tuesday. Feb. 8, 2005 at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was a Veteran having served in the U. S. Army. He was the son of the late Milton W. and Lauvenia Thompson Reed. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary P. Reed, brothers. Marvin Reed and Tom Reed; sister. Katherine Thompson.

Survivors include four sisters-in-law. Hazel Reed. Treva Cox. Ernestine Weeks and Anna Thomas; nine nephews, three nieces, several great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service was held Friday. Feb. 11 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Sebert Rorrer officiating. VFW POM #1184 Pulaski conducted the military graveside ceremony.

S. W. REED, 84, DEPARTS LIFE AT COLCHESTER Was Retired Farmer of Plymouth-St. Mary’s-Colmar Community, Funeral Tuesday.

Seigler W. Reed, 84, retired farmer of the Plymouth, St. Mary’s and Colmar community, departed this life Saturday at his late home in Colchester. He had been in frail health for the past three months. Mr. Reed was well known and highly regarded by a host of friends. 

Funeral services for Mr. Reed were held at 2 Tuesday afternoon, April 2, in the Colchester Christian church. Rev. Ernest Louderman, pastor, officiated in the rites, his message bringing solace to many loved ones and friends attending. 

Interment was in the Dunkard cemetery in McDonough county. Casket bearers were Ronald Kimler, Max Hudson, Wayne and Reed Harmon, Don Bilderback and Wayne Reed, all grandsons of the departed one. 

Seigler Wayne Reed, who passed away March 30, 1957, was born December 31, 1872, near Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Virginia. He was the sixth of seven children born to Evans and Millie (Reed) Reed. His parents, his brothers, Humphrey, Fuller, Milton and Burman, his sisters, Nancy and Luvena are deceased. 

As a young man he came to Carthage, Illinois and the rest of his life was spent in Hancock and McDonough Counties. He lived near St. Marys for many years, later moving to Colmar where he was employed in the oil fields. He has lived in Colchester for the past 20 years. 

He was married on February 6, 1896 to Matilda Ellen Duncan, also of Virginia. They were the parents of 8 children, seven of whom survive him, namely Millie Kimler of Colchester, Goldie Williams of Plymouth, Nona Bachman of Chicago, Ruby Moon of Casper, Wyoming, Mary Calloway of California, Della Young of Quincy and Sylvester of Denver, Colorado. One son, Fuller Wayne passed away Jan. 28, 1942. Mrs. Reed passed away Jan. 28, 1926. 

Mr. Reed was later married to Mrs. Dora Konecski who survives him with one son, Dick Reed and a step-daughter, Eleanor Carson, both of Colchester. 

Twenty grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren survive him also. 

Mr. Reed had been in poor health in recent years but was always able to be up and enjoyed the visits of friends and loved ones. He will be sadly missed.

MRS. SEIGLAR W. REED DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS 

Was Mother of Mrs. Fred Hudson, of Augusta -- Funeral Held Sunday Near Colmar

Mrs. Seigler Reed, mother of Mrs. Fred Hudson of Augusta, passed away at her home near Colmar, at 11 o'clock Thursday night after a long illness, death being due to cancer. She had been ill for a long time but bore her suffering with much patience. She was a woman highly respected in her home neighborhood and had a wide circle of friends who sincerely sympathize with the sorrowing husband and children. 

Matilda Ellen Duncan, daughter of Abijah and Cordelia Duncan, was born in Floyd county, Virginia, on June 14, 1875, and passed away at her home near Colmar, Illinois, at 11 o'clock p. m. on January 28, 1926, her age at the time of her death being 60 years, 7 months and 14 days. 

At an early age, she confessed her faith in her Savior, and united with the Dunkard church in Floyd county, Virginia, later transferring her membership to Camp Creek church in McDonough county, Illinois. 

She was united in marriage to Seiglar Wayne Reed on February 6, 1896, who survives with the following children: Mrs. Millie Kimler and Mrs. Goldie Williams, of near Blandinsville, Ill., and Mrs. Nona Harvey, of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Ruby Moon of Birmingham, Ill., Mrs. Mary Hudson, Augusta, Ill., Della Mae, Fuller and Sylvester at home. Also there are three sisters: Mrs. Sarah Bloyd, West Point, Ill.; Mrs. Lucy Boyd, Carthage, Ill., and Mrs. Dillie Klymen, Cleveland, Ohio, and four brothers, Levi Duncan, of Christenburg, Va., Abraham Duncan, Balco, Mo., Humphrey Duncan, Sciota, Ill., and Wilbur Duncan, of Denver, Ill. She leaves six grandchildren: Lois and Norma Jean Williams, Ronald, Douglas Wayne and Earlene Kimler and Max Hudson. One grandchild, Harlen McIllmoil, preceded her in death nine years ago. 

Her parents and one brother and one sister preceded her in death several years ago.

The funeral of Mrs. Reed was held at 12 o'clock noon on Sunday from the Camp Creek church, southeast of Colmar, Rev. Lynn, of Astoria, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Nooner, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Duncan and Mrs. Charles Measley very sweetly sang "Draw Me Nearer," "There Will be No Dark Valley," and "Lord, I'm Coming Home" at the church and at the grave sang, "There is a Land That is Fairer than Day." The pall bearers were Kyle Leaster, John Dobbin, Glen Hamm, James Twitchell, Frank Goff and Frank Loy. The burial was in the Dunkard cemetery.
