Dennis Ray Zacek, beloved husband of Monica, amazing father of Jan, Jill, and Kali, and very best Pawpaw to Julianna, Lyla, Katherine, Sawyer, Leah, and Ellie, was born on April 24, 1954 and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, 9/17/2024 after a brief but debilitating physical illness. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. Most of all, he loved being in the peace and beauty of God’s nature. He was a farmer of 47 years and knew how to build and fix almost everything. He was hardworking and selfless -- dutifully helping at his church and doing anything and everything for his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Monica, his adoring children Kali (and B. J.) Ellison, Jan (and Lee) Lewis, and Jill (and Matthew) McDonald, as well as his adoring grandchildren: Julianna Lewis, Lyla Ellison, Katherine Lewis, Sawyer Lewis, Leah Ellison, and Ellie McDonald He is also survived by his sisters and brother: Beatrice (and Elrees) Porche, Agnes (and Wayne) Gabrysch, Genevieve Wolter, Luanne Zacek, and John (and Shana) Zacek. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia Zacek, his brothers, Lawrence Zacek and A. J. Zacek, and his father-in-law, Allan Witte. A private funeral mass was held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Inez, Texas.

Ganado—Louis Bernard Zacek Jr., 46, of Ganado, formerly of Edna, died in a Ganado hospital Monday following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Joe McClanahan officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna. Pallbearers will be Lee Putnam, Terry and Ronald Conerly, Weymon Harvey, Jerome Knebel, Julius Neumann Jr. and Dan Oaks. Mr. Zacek was born Oct. 8, 1938, in Grimes County. He was employed as a salesman for Victoria Welding and Lease Service. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Sanders Zacek of Ganado; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Zacek Sr. of Edna; a son, Louis Bernard Zacek III of Ganado; and two sisters, Mrs. Donella Smith of Edna and Mrs. Elizabeth Conerly of Lufkin.

Edna—Louis Bernard Zacek, 73, of Edna died Wednesday in an Edna hospital following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Friday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna with the Rev. Joe Webb, pastor of First Baptist church of Edna, officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna. Pallbearers will be Lee Putnam, Terry and Ronald Conerly, Ernie Bartek, David Mooney and Keith Orsak. Louis Zacek III, Gene Sallock, Elton Wren, E. V. Weiser, Frank Riha and the employees of Mobil Pipeling in Vanderbilt will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Zacek was born Aug. 22, 1912, in Engle. He was retired from Mobil Pipeline and was a member of First Baptist Church of Edna. He was preceded in death by a son, Louis Zacek Jr. Surviving are his wife, Opal of Edna; two daughters, Donella Smith of Edna and Elizabeth Conerly of Lufkin; a sister, Ester Lee HAdash of Schulenburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edna—Our beloved mother and grandmother, Opal Elizabeth Wren Zacek, 87, of Edna, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2008. She loved the Lord and extended that love to others. She will be greatly missed. She was born on Oct. 20, 1920, in Houston, to Gaines W. Wren and Eva Belle Mays Wren. She grew up in Iola. She married Louis B. Zacek on Oct. 18, 1936 in Iola. Her greatest joy was her children, Elizabeth Joan Conerly of Lufkin and Donella Jane and husband Leslie C. Smith of Edna. She loved her grandchildren, Terry Conerly (Beverly), Ronald Conerly (Diane), Melanie Dubtzke (Rob), Lori Smith Putnam (Lee), Shana Smith Zacek (John) and Louis B. Zacek III; her great-grandchildren, Chrissa Conerly, Kim Strippling, Todd Conerly, Brett Conerly, Courtney Conerly, Kristen Conerly, Kelli Conerly, Tyler Putnam, Lane Putnam, and McKenna Zacek; and one great-great-grandchild, Michael Vasquez. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis; and her son, Louis B. Zacek Jr. Pallbearers will be Louis B. Zacek III, Terry Conerly, Ronald Conerly, Lee Putnam, Tyler Putnam, Lane Putnam, John Zacek, and Mark Mabrey. The funeral service will be at 2 p. m. Ganado—Frieda Zacharias, 85, of Ganado, died Thursday in a Victoria hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1896 in Phillipsburg and had been a resident of Jackson County since she was 15 years old. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p. m. at St. James’ Lutheran Church in Ganado with the Rev. Bill Pulscher officiating. Burial will follow in Ganado City Cemetery under the direction of Ganado Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Michael, Pat and John Russell Durham, and Justin Boeben. Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Goolsby of Houston and Geraldine Durham of Port Lavaca; a sister, Hattie Pagel of Ganado; and five grandchildren.

Diana Jean Blinka Zack, 55, died Thursday, April 6, 2006. She was born December 13, 1950, in Victoria, TX, to Marcella Mildred Rod Howard and to the late David Ludwig Blinka. She was employed by C and B Hasdorff as a secretary and bookkeeper in Edna. Survivors: husband, Richard Zack of Edna; daughter, Carolyn Zack Grimes and husband Dr. Kevin A. Grimes of Houston; son, Richard Andrew Zack of Edna; sisters, Becky Wisnieski of El Campo and Karen Munoz of Wharton; brother, Paul Blinka of Lake Jackson; and two grandchildren, Jordan Nicole Zack and Cian Richard Grimes. Visitation will be at 1 p. m. Saturday, April 8, 2006 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna, followed by Rosary at 2 p. m. and mass at 3:00 p. m. both at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna with Msgr. Ganado—Adolph Ervin Zajicek Sr., 71, a former Ganado city councilman and mayor, died Monday in a Ganado hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday at the St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bill Pluscher officiating. Burial will be in Ganado City Cemetery under direction of Ganado Funeral Home. Mr. Zajicek was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Washington County, Texas, and he and his wife, Elsie, were married in 1937 in Ganado. A retired mechanic, he work many years for the Mauritz Co. and in 1954 opened his own business, Adolph’s Magneto Service, which he operated until 1974. He first was appointed a city councilman in July 1965 and served until April 1966. He served as mayor from April 1966 until 1968 and then served on the City Council again from 1968 until 1974. He was a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood and the St. James Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Elsie, of Ganado; two daughters, Peggy Glaze of Ganado and Patsy Kubala of Edna; a son, Adolph Zajicek Jr. of Ganado; sister, Emily Krajcek of Victoria; three brothers, Robert, Willie and Johnny, all of Ganado; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Pallbearers will be Raymond and Carl Zajicek, Glen Shoenfeld, Calvin Schomburg, Alvin Quebe, Wilford Swank. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Ottis, Anton Hlavaty, Ed Wiese and Mike Martin.

Ganado Services Set Today for Bennie Zajicek Ganado—Funeral services for Bennie Zajicek, 50, will be held at 4 p. m. today (Thursday) at the Psencik Funeral Home, with Rev. L. G. Wehman officiating. Burial will be in the Ganado City Cemetery. Mr. Zajicek was the owner of a feed store, and had lived in Ganado the past 49 years. He died about noon Wednesday in the local hospital. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Esther Zajicek of Ganado, two daughters, Mrs. Laverne Swank of Houston and Mrs. Lucille Kleckar of Ganado; four brothers, Robert, Willie Adolph and Johnnie, all of Ganado; two sisters, Mrs. Emilie Krajcik of Victoria and Mrs. Julia Kuebe of Ganado; and one grandchild.

Carl William Zajicek, age 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2022. Carl was born on Friday, October 15, 1937 in Ganado, Texas to Willie and Agnes Zajicek. If you lived in Ganado, you knew Carl, whether from his Southside Gulf Service Station of 25 years, or he may have, possibly refinished furniture for you. A very special thank you to the nurses and doctors of Citizens Medical Center, Ganado Nursing & Rehab Center, and Crown Hospice of Victoria. Charles “Chuck” Zajicek, of Edna, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the age 56. He was born on June 4, 1961, in Ganado, Texas to the late Adolph Zajicek and Jo Ann Gerdes Zajicek.
Charles was a member of the Victoria Firefighter Department for 25 years. He also served as The Fire Marshall and Fire Chief of Ganado Volunteer Fire Department along with working part time for the Edna Fire Department. He had a loving personality and a contagious smile that will never be forgotten. Charles was a loving husband; father, brother, co-worker, uncle and dear friend that will be truly missed. He was known as “Pa” to not only his grandchildren but many other children throughout our community.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Tammy Muschalek Zajicek; daughters, Caylie Zajicek Garcia and her husband Jason, Candace Muncrief Floyd and her husband Eric; sons, Robert Zajicek and his wife Kimberly, Dustin Muncrief and his wife Taryn; mother, Jo Ann Gerdes Zajicek; mother-in-law; Caroline Muschalek; sister, Susan Webel and her husband Doug; sister-in-law; Tracey Muschalek Myska and her husband Raymond; brother-in-law, Jeff Muschalek and his wife Janice; grandchildren, Avery Love Galbiati, Troy McQueen, Kayden Zajicek, Karsyn Damborsky, Kaylin and Karoline Floyd, Dawsyn Muncrief, Jalea, Avery and Cara Garcia; numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by his father, Adolph Zajicek and father-in-law, Dennis Muschalek.

Esther Schomburg Zajicek, 84, of Ganado, departed peacefully from this earth on Sept. 21, 2011. She was born on Dec. 13, 1916 in Ganado to the late Fritz and Melinda Schomburg. Esther was a retired grocery store clerk and a life-time member of St. James Lutheran Church. She is survived by two daughters, LaVerne (Wilford) Swank of Sugar Land and Lucille Klekar of Ganado; five grandchildren, Terri (Michael) Rodriguez, Tanja Swank, Yvette (Jeff) Smith, Lesley Klekar, Ryan Kelkar; two great-grandchildren, Tamara Rodriguez and Brandon Rodriguez; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Zajicek; sisters, Clara Schoenfield and Elsie Zajicek; brothers, Ernest, Walter, Charlie and Henry Schomburg; and son-in-law, L. Ganado—Johnnie Zajicek, 68, of Ganado died Wednesday in a Houston hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10 a. m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church in Ganado with the Rev. Don Marquart, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Ganado City Cemetery under direction of Ganado Funeral Home. A military graveside service will be conducted by Hilliard-Yoas American Legion Post No. 346 of Ganado. Mr. Zajicek was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Ganado. He owned and operated the Ganado Feed Store for 32 years until he retired in September 1980. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Hilliard-Yoas Post No. 346 of the American Legion and a member of St. James Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Alice Koenning Zajicek of Ganado. The couple were married in Ganado Sept. 15, 1940. Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Linda Rose Peters of Angleton; four sons, James Charles and Raymond Douglas Zajicek, both of Ganado, Gene Allen Zajicek of Rayne, La., and David Bruce Zajicek of Sugar Land; a sister, Emilie Krajcik of Victoria; a brother, Robert Zajicek of Ganado; and 10 grandchildren. Edna—Richard Alexander Zambrano, 25, of Edna died in Victoria Tuesday, June 11, 1991, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Zambrano was born Feb. 9, 1966, in El Campo to Martha Garcia Zambrano and the late Manuel Zambrano and was a Catholic. He attended Edna High School. Survivors: Mother; sisters, Gloria Manzanalez, Martha Villela, Mary Lou Hernandez, Elvira Rodriguez, Sylvia Sanchez, all of Edna, Margaret De Leon and Ophelia Willman, both of Victoria; brothers, Manuel and Robert Zambrano, both of Edna and Frank Zambrano of El Paso. Mrs. Martha "Martie" Pauline Zambrano-Torres, of Pasadena, Texas, born on November 6, 1971 in Ganado, Texas, to Elizabeth Rosa Villalobos and the late Manuel Zambrano Jr., passed away at age 46 on June 17, 2018 in Pasadena, Texas. She was a Pre-K Teacher at The Children’s University, Inc. where she changed and impacted many young lives. Martha was married to Carlos Torres Jr.. She is survived by her husband, Carlos Torres Jr.; mother, Elizabeth Rosa Villalobos; stepfather, Jose Villalobos Sr.; sons, Carlos R. Edna—Funeral services for Guadalupe Hernandez Zamora, 30, of Edna, who died of gunshot wounds Friday morning, will be at 10 a. m. Monday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. The Rev. John Bily will officiate. Burial will be in the Edna Latin American Cemetery, with Slavik Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Ms. Zamora was shot six times with a .30-caliber carbine fired by her estranged common-law husband, Ernest Castro. After shooting her, Castro shot and killed himself. Ms. Zamora was born Oct. 10, 1954, in Edna and was employed as a waitress at Pizza Hut in Edna. She is survived by her three daughters, Victoria Zamora of Houston, and Leslie Anne and Sarah Linda Zamora of Edna; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hernandez Sr. of Edna; her grandmother, Mrs. Manuela Hernandez of Edna; three sisters, Janie Zamora of Houston, Emilie Zarate of Edna and Mary Linda Sertuche of Victoria; 10 brothers, Felix, Joe Jr., Ignacio, Lucio, Tommy, Johnny, Manuel, Jessie, Emilio and Domingo Hernandez, all of Edna. Edna - Abigail "Abby" Zapata of Edna passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at the young age of 25. She was born in Victoria, Texas, on May 23, 1988, to David Zapata and Esther Garza of Edna. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister and aunt who will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Abby is survived by her parents; sons, Levi John Trevino and Karter Benny Vasquez; grandpa, John Samora; sister, Angelica Garza and husband Pedro. She is preceded in death by her grandma, Eloisa Samora; stepdad, Tony Garza. Visitation will be Monday, December 16, 12-2 pm in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Angela Marie Zapata, 47, of Edna went home to her Lord on Sunday, October 3, 2021. She was born on Friday, February 1, 1974 in McAllen, Texas to Maria Oralia Rios and Jose Guadalupe Rios. Angela was raised in Rio Grande City, Texas, with her parents and siblings, the entire family worked as migrant workers all over the country. At the age of 18 she met and married Javier Zapata and they moved to Edna, Texas where they started a family, she then went to work at Friends of Elderly Citizens for eight years, after she retired from there, she stayed home to do the things she enjoyed which included cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. Angela is survived by her husband, Javier Zapata, Sr., her daughter Maricruz Zapata Goss, and her son, Javier Guadalupe Zapata, Jr. She has been preceded in death by her parents, grandparents; Manuela Guajardo, Santos Rios, Francisca Tamez and Felix Rios, her son-in-law; Jarrell "Jay" Goss, and her siblings; Lupe Rios, Aide Rios, Rosie Rios and Melilisa Rios. Edna—Manuel Valdez Zarate, 73, of Edna, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000. He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Goliad, to the late Atanacio and Antonio Valdez Zarate. He was a retired truck driver at Edna Motor Company and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Cursillos De Christiandad. Manuel Zarate Jr., of Edna, went to be with our heavenly Father on Aug. 19, 2018, at the age of 68. He was born in Victoria, Texas, on Oct. 30, 1949 to the late Manuel Zarate Sr. and Josephine Jacinto Zarate. Manuel served in the U.S. Army for 6 years before starting his career and retiring from Formosa Plastics as an Inspector of 21 years. Manuel was a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan who never missed watching a game. He loved to be on the family ranch, a very hard working man that provided and would do anything for his family, friends, and was always there to gave a helping hand. Manuel was a very loving husband, wonderful father, caring brother, patient grandfather, respected uncle and a genuine friend who will be missed dearly. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Amelia Hernandez Zarate; daughters, Shawn Zarate and her fiancé Michael DelosSantos and Letecia Zarate; sisters, Mary Herrera, Jane Pena, Theresa (Candido) Benavides, Margie (Jose) Mendoza, and Yolanda (Michael) Robson; brothers, Jimmy (Sylvia) Zarate, Frank (Angie) Zarate; grandson, Manuel Adrian Zarate and Daniel Jose Zarate; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Edna—Gladys M. Zavadil, 83, of Edna, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2008. He was born on May 14, 1925, in Jackson County, to the late John Edward and Meta Schneider Davis. Gladys was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, and friend to many. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Edna and an associate member of the WSCS. Edna—August Ziegler, 78, of 3407 Meadow Lane in Victoria died Thursday in a Victoria hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services have tentatively been set for 10 a. m. Saturday in Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna with burial in Memory Gardens. Mr. Ziegler was born Sept. 27, 1905, in Cologne, Germany, and had lived in Victoria since 1973. Before his retirement he was a confectionary retailer. He is survived by a son, Carl of Victoria, and three grandchildren. Frank Zikuhr 78, passed away on February 15, 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Frank was born to Louis and Sadie Zikuhr on August 22,1945. He spent his formative years in Damon Texas. He went on to join the United States Army and later become a member of the Carpenters Union and work at STP. Throughout his career he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion. He married the love of his life, Mary “Penny” Hurt, on February 22, 1975. More than anything, Frank was a devoted father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, playing games, and telling jokes. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced. In his free time, Frank enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, tinkering and being with his family. He was always eager to share his knowledge and skills with others. He loved to make people laugh and thought life was a gift. Frank was preceded in death by mother Sadi Zikuhr (Loesch), Father Louis Frank Zikuhr, his wife Mary “Penny” Zikuhr, sister Bernice Bass, brother Earl Zikuhr, and daughter Tammy Zikuhr. Frank is survived by his sister Betty Bullard, his sons and their spouses, Jason & Kalea Zikuhr, Timothy & Faith Zikuhr, and Brandon & Elizabeth Zikuhr, and his grandchildren, Alexcia, Alyssa, Kaylie, Jasmine, Jermaine, Alexis, Danni, Sadie, Cole Easton and Noah. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at the First Baptist Church 400 Buechman Rd. in Ganado on February 19, 2024, at 11am.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 9:30 o’clock for Emil Ziegelbauer, 40, welder, who was found dead at the rear of the home at 309 Yuba Dam Street Christmas Day at 2:30 p. m. A single shot rifle was beside the body and there was one hole in the right temple. Chief Deputy Sheriff Wayne Miller said Ziegelbauer’s wife informed him her husband had threatened suicide. No verdict had been returned Wednesday pending an investigation by Justice Joe Cherry. Rev. B. Janacek officiated at the rites at Slavik Funeral Home. Burial was in the Ganado Cemetery [Assumption]. Pallbearers were Albert Supak, Louis Matocha, Joe Macha, Gus Hessler, Cyril Muzik and Joe Keen. Ziegelbauer was born at Cistern March 4, 1914, a son of Edward Ziegelbauer of Ganado and the late Mrs. Alvina Tomecek. He moved to Edna recently from Ganado and was employed by the DeNeefe Welding Co. He had resided in the county five years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anita Ziegelbaure; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Supak of Ganado; a daughter, Mrs. Claudia Rubesh of Louise, and a son, Richard Ziegelbauer of Edna, and one grandchild.
