Tom J. Wells

Mr. Tom J. Wells Died Monday In Hospital at Waco. Mr. Tom Wells, a well known Edna citizen and a member of a Jackson County pioneer family, passed away at the Legion Hospital in Waco Monday evening following a protracted illness caused by a stroke.

The remains were brought to Edna for interment in the Edna Cemetery where so many of his people have been laid to rest. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock at the Hevelka Funeral Home in Edna.

Rev. E. C. Young, pastor of the Edna Methodist Church, conducted the service.

Tom Wells was the youngest son of the late Judge L. F. Wells and Mrs. Frances Sutherland Wells, both natives of Jackson County, and both members of prominent Jackson County pioneers.  He was born at Texana December 31, 1879, hence was 67 years and 4 months of age.  He was a graduate of the old Edna High School, a private school taught and founded in this city (Edna, Texas) by the late Mr. John Correll.  After graduating here he attended West Texas Military Academy at San Antonio, at which time General Douglas MacArthur was a student at this well known military school.  A year or so prior to the First World War the subject of this sketch enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army, and served throughout the First World War in France and was in some of those great bloody battles.  For the past number of years Mr. Wells was employed in the oil fields of Texas, and he was thus employed when his health failed.

Tom Wells enjoyed the friendship of a large number of people.  His jovial and sunny disposition made him friends on every hand and his passing has brought genuine sorrow to many hearts.

He is survived by one brother, Dr. R.W. Wells of Edna, and one sister, Mrs. Flora McDowell, also of this city (Edna, Texas), and a large number of other relatives.

The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy in their bereavement.

M. G. (Greer) Whitaker
Former Citizen of This County Dies

M. G. (Greer) Whitaker, 56, former San Angelo implement and seed dealer and well-known for his farming and feeding operations in this section, died suddenly of a heart attack at this Menard ranch Saturday afternoon.

The body was brought to Cox-Vautrin Funeral Home Saturday night.  Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from the Church of Christ.

Greer Whitaker and his brother, H. G. Whitaker, moved to San Angelo from Slaton in 1928 to pen Whitaker Bros., farm implement and see dealers.  They continued the partnership until 1941, when Greer sold his interest in the business and took over Whitaker Bros., farm on Spring Creek.

He sold the Spring Creek farm about two or three years ago to H.H. Ripple and brought this brother’s lease on the 1,000-acre Elliott Farm below Wall, which he had continued to operate.  He recently bought a ranch of around 1,500 acres on the San Saba River near Menard and had moved there only a week ago Monday.

The Whitaker Brothers took over the 887-acre farm on Spring Creek when it was completely run down and made it into one of the show places of this territory.

Porter Henderson, long associated with the Whitakers, recalled Saturday night that the farm when the Whitakers bought it for $25 an acre “had Johnson grass and cockle burrs so thick that you couldn’t see a man riding a horse on it.”

By intensive cultivation, they produced many fine crops on the land, specializing in feed.

The Whitakers in partnership fed many cattle for sale, as well as engaging in custom feeding.  The present West Texas Stock Yards grew out of feeding pens which they established along the Santa Fe tracks.  They also operated a horse and mule auction sale there for several years.

Greer Whitaker was active in civic affairs and was an Elder in the Church of Christ.

Both Greer and H. G. Whitaker had sold Ford automobiles and Lentz mills at Slaton before moving to San Angelo.  They had the John Deere agency here and also operated a store at Ballinger from 1931 until 1936.  Henderson managed the firm’s Ballinger store.  He bought the implement business here in 1944, H. G. retaining the seed agency.

Survivors include the wife; three brothers, H. G., who now lives on a ranch near Junction, and R. H. and J. R. Whitaker of San Angelo; and one sister, Mrs. L. I. Sanford of Ganado.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Whitaker, both are buried here (San Angelo).  Mrs. Greer Whitaker is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Thompson, 210 W. 25th street (San Angelo) -San Angelo Standard

The above article telling of the death of a former well known young resident of Jackson County will be read with sorrow by many of our people, especially those who enjoyed his acquaintance.  He was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. (Pete) Whitaker, and a brother of Mrs. L. I. Sanford of Ganado.  The family, after residing in Jackson County for many years, moved to San Angelo when Greer was still a youth.

J. A. Whitehead
Mr. Whitehead Dead

Friends of Mr. J. A. WHITEHEAD who resided above Edna, just south of Cordele, were shocked to learn of his death which occurred Sunday night.  The remains were sent to his old home at Victoria for burial.  The following mention of his life is taken from the Victoria Advocate of March 14th:

Funeral services were held at the Goldman-Waters Chapel at four o’clock this afternoon for J. A. WHITEHEAD, 76, a well-known farmer of Jackson County and former resident of Victoria, who died at his home north of Edna Sunday night at 8:45.  The services were under the auspices of the Victoria Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which the deceased was a member for fifty-one years, and had served as grandmaster.  The pallbearers were S. LORANZO, A. S. WHEELER, KAI J. LEFFLAND, C. F. SCHNEIDER, J. M. BECKMAN and CARL M. HILLER.  Interment was made in the Odd Fellows plot in the Evergreen Cemetery.  There were many beautiful floral tributes.

JOSEPH A. WHITEHEAD, the son of JAMES and SARAH SHARPE WHITEHEAD, was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa, March, 11, 1865 (paper says 1965 but that is wrong), and was the last surviving member of a family of eleven children, eight sons and three daughters, none of whom are left a male heir to perpetuate the family name.  Mr. WHITEHEAD was a kind and indulgent father and a most worthy citizen, being noted for his public spirit and progressiveness.  He was reared a Methodist and was an active worker in the church until recent years when his hearing failed.

In 1885, Mr. WHITEHEAD was married to Miss KATHERINE JORDAN of Cherokee, Iowa, who survives him, together with two daughters, Mrs. JESSE L. KERN of Edna and Mrs. A. F. MULHOLLAN of this city.

Many relatives and friends in Jackson County were grieved the first of the week when the sad news came that Miss Kate Whitley, a native of Jackson County, had passed away in San Antonio where she had been residing for the past few years.  Death was not unexpected as she had been in failing health for several years.

Joe Billy Williams

Joe Billy Williams of Rockport, Texas passed away after nearly 87, years of selfless service to his community, his country and above all his loving family; especially his beloved wife Alma who preceded him in death. All of us who knew Joe (Pop) are grateful for the  time we shared: the hunting, fishing, and camping trips; family celebrations; and the wonderful stories, pranks, and jokes. The following is a tribute written by one of his grandchildren.

Well Pop, on Friday, June 26th, 2020, the Lord called you home. Although you left this world earlier than I wanted you to, you left with a life full of things to be proud of. You raised three children who turned out to be great people who in return gave you six grandchildren and one great grandchild. You instilled a lifetime of valuable knowledge and lessons on how to be a good man or woman to those grandchildren, including myself and we will try our best to pass on pieces of you to our kids. You served this country in the United States Army, served as a volunteer firefighter in Ganado and Beeville and a captain of a crash crew at Chase Field and according to your stories you “know all about” many other things. To me Pop, the most important thing you were, was my Grandpa. You may have heard Pop during the football games, talking to everyone he could in the stands until he couldn’t talk anymore, or maybe even in a restaurant full of people and you heard his loud, contagious laugh or big bass voice singing “Happy Birthday” to a stranger. In a world full of hatred and evil, one conversation with him would make you forget about all that and bring warmth to your heart. No matter what kind of day you might be having, one small conversation with Pop could lighten any situation and bring peace and innocence to anyone’s soul. Even in your last days when we went to see you, the first thing you could think about doing when awoken was to crack a smile in an attempt to make light of a sad situation. You will always be in my heart wherever life takes me. Thank you for being the great man that you were or as you would always say “much obliged”. I love you Pop.

Joe is survived by his children, Cathy Williams Lowe, Scott Williams and Gregg Williams; grandchildren Allen Lowe and wife Meagan, Lena Lowe McCarver and husband Mike, Scott Lowe, Logan Williams, Emilee Williams, and Clayton Williams; and great grandson, Luke McCarver; sister-in-law, Anne Williams; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Plans for a celebration of life are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Hospice of South Texas and Lamar Volunteer Fire Department.

Willis, 89, of Edna, Texas passed away peacefully with Family by her side, Sunday, July 12, 2020 at her second home in Gloucester, N.C. A Walk-Through Viewing for family and friends will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.; followed by a Graveside Service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Straits United Methodist Church, Gloucester, NC with Pastor David Jones officiating.

Miss Betty was a 1948 graduate of Edna High school.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Alice Volkmer of Edna, her sister Ruth Stephenson, brothers Warren and Frank (Chunky) Volkmer and her son, Giles W. (Chip) Willis, III.

Following high school Betty attended, Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachie, Texas.   She then took a full-time job with Humble Oil in Houston, TX.  That is was when at a chance meeting at Prince’s Drive-In she met then 2nd Lt.  Giles W. Willis, Jr., of the U. S. Air Force. Two months later they were engaged and then married at the First Baptist Church, Edna, TX. Betty embraced new life, as a Military wife as she embraced all things in life, with grace and compassion. During the couple’s first assignment in California, they welcomed their first child, Chriscelle, and a few years later while stationed at Cape Canaveral Florida, their son “Chip” was born.

Betty excelled as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She brought joy and God’s love to every person who knew her and immersed herself in every task given to her. She enjoyed volunteering and as her husband’s Military career took their family to many stations across the country, she was always quickly welcomed as a vital member to the community, church or military organizations she served during her time there. Betty often helped console other young wives whose husbands died on missions.

After Colonel Willis’s  retirement  from the Air Force, he took on a new career teaching Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX and later retired from Baylor University in Waco, TX. As a faculty wife Betty was a friend and enduring hostess to faculty staff, students and their families.

In the 1950s she began her lifelong association with the United Methodist Women.  She was a founding member to several UMW Chapters and was a district officer at other locations. Betty and Giles had a close relationship with the churches, pastors and their families in all of the places where they lived.

Music was a great love of hers, and she is remembered by many for her beautiful singing and as a magnificent pianist. For many years Betty served as a pianist for the Straits United Methodist Church.

Following their retirement from teaching, the couple fulfilled their retirement dream, spending their summers at Giles’ family home in Gloucester, NC and their winters at  the home where Betty was born in Edna, TX.  In 2017, Betty suffered a stroke, limiting her trips to the home she loved in Edna, Texas.  She is loved by many and has friends and family in both communities.

Giles and Betty were often known to stop whatever they were doing so they could have a dance together. One day they will be dancing together again on Heavens Dance Floor.

She leaves her husband of nearly 65 years, Colonel Giles W. Willis, Jr.; Daughter Chriscelle Willis; Daughter In-Law, Renee Cole Willis of San Antonio, TX; 7 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Straits Methodist Church Cemetery fund c/o Roger W. Whitehurst, 1351 Harkers Island Rd., Beaufort, NC  28516.
