With Michael's leadership, his skills as a master carpenter, and with God's blessing, the mission team was able to build and furnish a three-bedroom home for the needy families in twelve days every summer.

He never missed an opportunity to help anyone in need. The lives that Michael touched during his life's walk are too numerous to list. Michael treated each challenge as an opportunity. Truly Michael was a giant among men, a gentle and loving man who was loved by all and admired by many.

Funeral Services Held At Navidad For Joseph Whitley, 70

The death of Joe Whitley, a prominent Navidad citizen, Sunday night in a Victoria hospital, was a shock to his Jackson County friends, as few, outside of the family and close neighbors, knew that he had been indisposed.

He was taken to a hospital at Victoria Sunday following a heart attack. He had suffered from heart trouble for some time, and died as a result of this trouble.

The funeral service was held at the family home in the Navidad section Tuesday afternoon, January 9, and interment was in the Knopp Cemetery in that section.

The service, which was conducted by Rev. B. F. Royal, pastor of the Edna Baptist Church, was held at the cemetery where a large number of friends from Navidad, Morales, Edna and other sections gathered to pay to this good man their last tribute of esteem and respect. The floral offering was very beautiful and profuse.

The following is a brief history of Mr. Whitley’s life as read by Mr. Royal:

Joe Whitley was born August 7, 1869, at Navidad, Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Whitley, pioneer Jackson County settlers and highly esteemed citizens, and passed to his reward from a hospital in Victoria at 8 p. m. January 7, 1940; at the age of 70 years and five months.

Mr. Whitley was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Wilkerson November 16, 1895. To this union were born three children, one of whom died in infancy. The remaining two are: Sister Mary Dominica of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Miss Ima Whitley of San Antonio. The wife of this union passed away in September, 1900.

Mr. Whitley then was united in marriage to Mrs. Katherine Crouch, November 16, 1904. Mrs. Crouch remained his companion until his death. To this union were born four children, one of whom died at the early age of three. Those remaining are: Mrs. Ralph Terrell of Navidad, Mrs. L. W. Parr of Victoria and Mr. Henry Whitley of Navidad. Besides those above mentioned, left behind are two step-sons, W. B. Crouch of Victoria and Rufus Crouch of Oklahoma City; one sister, Miss Katie Whitley of Edna, and one brother J. W. Whitley of Navidad.

Mr. Whitley was a good and useful citizen. He served his precinct and Jackson County a number of years as commissioner, and Jackson County never had a more honest and conscientious public official. He was a man who talked little and thought much; he was a friend upon whom you could depend and he was a husband and father who was forever faithful to those sacred ties.

Lillian married Marvin Herman Wiede on October 27, 1939, and they were married for 69 years. Their years together were filled with family, joy and laughter, and Lillian loved Marvin wholeheartedly in this world until the day she was able to join him again in Heaven.

She enjoyed playing Bridge and Forty-two with friends, and games of Trivial Pursuit with her family during hunting season, when she was also known as 'DEAD-EYE LIL'. Most of all, Lillian always wanted to make others, particularly her husband, children, and grandchildren, feel loved and special.
