Pamela Christine Brandes Tackett

Austin-Pamela Christine Brandes Tackett was born in El Campo, Texas, on August 4, 1945, and died on Friday, March 26, 2021, following a lengthy and courageous fight against Alzheimer’s.

Pam was raised in Ganado, Texas, and had a wonderful childhood, which she talked about frequently.

Pam was the Senior Class President and Salutatorian of her 1963 high school class in Ganado. Pam was the Homecoming Grand Duchess for the GHS Indians her Senior year, served on the high school “Chieftain” Annual staff and student council all four years of high school, and participated in the band, the drama club, and the American Legion Girls’ State.

Pam attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas before transferring to and graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in the Fall 1967.

Following her graduation and marriage to Steve in September 1967, Pam began her 45-year career in public education in 1968 at the Texas Education Agency (TEA), working as a secretary in the typing pool.

Thirty-three (33) years later, Pam retired in 2001 as the Executive Director of the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC), a Texas State Agency created in 1995 to assume former duties of TEA to regulate the certification and standards of conduct for all public school teachers and educators in Texas.

During her years at TEA and SBEC, Pam actively participated in the development and administration of all statewide assessment tests or exams for public school students and public educators.

Following her retirement from SBEC, Pam continued her career in public education until 2014 by working as a consultant and one of a dozen or so “Early College High School Coaches” assisting public high schools in Texas to set up and administer so-called Early College High Schools designed to allow students least likely to attend college an opportunity to receive both a high school diploma and either an associate degree or at least 60 credit hours toward a baccalaureate degree.

Pam first met her husband Steve in 1961 at a birthday party in her backyard in Ganado celebrating her Sweet 16 birthday. Steve had recently moved to Ganado and was graciously invited to his new classmate’s birthday party. Steve clearly recalls that when they first met, Pam introduced herself and asked him to marry her. Pam, on the other hand, had a different recollection and always called Steve “Mr. Lucky” because she chose to love him.

Although Pam and Steve were good friends in high school and thereafter, they did not begin dating until their senior year at the University of Texas. But fate has a way of bringing people back together who are meant to be with one another.

Pam and Steve were married in Ganado in September 1967 and had a wonderful marriage of almost 54 years.

Following their marriage, Pam worked tirelessly to help support her family, help put Steve through law school, birth and raise two children, build her own amazing career, and become the most loving, thoughtful, and caring person and friend one could ever hope to meet.

Pam is survived by her husband, Steve; her daughter Cara C. Tackett; her son, Ross J. Tackett; her beloved daughter-in-law, Melissa; her three amazing grandchildren, William Tackett, Austin Tackett, and Elizabeth (Ellie) Tackett; her brother, Woodrow “Woody” W. Brandes, Jr.; and many wonderful and beloved cousins. Pam is preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow W. Brandes, Sr. and Christine C. Brandes, her grandparents, and all of her many treasured aunts and uncles.

Pam was a life-long United Methodist, and Pam and Steve were active members of The Downtowners Sunday School Class and First United Methodist Church of Austin, for the last 38 years, participating in and supporting its many ministries, including Mobile Loaves and Fishes, English As a Second Language program, Appalachia Service Project, Hands on Mission, Feed My People, the Reconciling Ministries Network, and the Four Corners Native American Ministries.

A simple graveside service for family and friends is planned for Saturday April 24, 2021, at 11:30 am at the Ganado Protestant Cemetery, County Road 252, Ganado, Texas. A reception immediately following the service will be held in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church of Ganado, 200 Twin Oaks Blvd, Ganado.

A memorial service and joyful celebration of Pam’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Austin at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Endowment Fund at First United Methodist Church of Austin, 1201 Lavaca Street, Austin, Texas 78701, to the Alzheimer’s Association, or to a charity of your choice.

Juan “Johnny” L. Tamez

EDNA – Juan “Johnny” L. Tamez, born in Olivia, Texas on May 16, 1938 to Abel Tamez Sr. and Dominga Lara Tamez, passed peacefully in the early morning hours of September 27, 2020. Johnny grew up outside of Louise, Texas with his brothers and sisters and was taught the value of hard work and strong ethics. Johnny married Juanita Barrera Tamez on September 6, 1964. This union produces one son, George Tamez of Edna, of which Johnny was extremely proud of and his pride and joy.

During his early teenage years, he worked around El Campo, Louise and Danavang areas farming. Johnny was always very mechanically inclined and found his calling as an automotive and diesel mechanic. He went on to receive diplomas and certificates in various areas of automotive and diesel mechanics. He was especially proud of his “Doctor of Motors” diploma he received and aced in the 1960s. In 1971, Johnny opened J. Tamez Arco service station in Edna where his business thrived until the OPEC oil embargo in the mid-1970s.

Afterwards, he went to work in the oil fields in and around south Texas. While working in the oil fields, he made many friends and business contacts which led him to establish another business, Tamez Welding & Oilfield Service, which quickly prospered. Unfortunately, Johnny was severely injured while working at an oil tank battery that left him permanently disabled and was unable to resume normal every day tasks we all take for granted. However, after numerous personal hardships and struggles, and after 5 years of rehabilitative therapy, Johnny regained some basic coordination and functionality. He began doing wood working projects, which he excelled at, along with doing small engine repairs and fixing sewing machines. He also took up gardening and, after investing in a much better tiller (his old tiller eventually proved inadequate), his garden grew and produced many varieties of vegetables, and an occasional fruit or two. This became his second calling and his garden grew to where it eventually encompassed half the back yard. Some vegetables were canned and many were given to family, friends and neighbors.

Johnny also continued his education and obtained his high school diploma in the early 1990s. He further continued his course work at Victoria College taking basic classes and was especially proud of completing them given the challenges he faced after his traumatic head injury.

Johnny was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Edna. He and his family attended Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Edna where he was an usher and assisted with CCD classes making sure the kids would not be tardy to their religious education classes. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Nestor & Abel Jr.) and his wife of 43 years. He is survived by his son, George; sisters Maria T. (Ninfa) Martinez, Lidia T. Savala, Adelayda T. Gonzalez, Herminia T. Perez; brothers Henry Tamez and Arthur Tamez along with numerous nieces and nephews. Johnny will be laid to rest next to his family at Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo, Texas.

Visitation begins 4 p.m. September 30 at Triska Funeral Home with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Funeral services begin 9 a.m. October 1 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park. Due to the CDC guidelines for the pandemic, masks are required at the funeral home, and seating will be limited.

Pallbearers will be George Tamez, Arthur Martinez, Albert Perez, Edward Gonzalez Jr., Robert Cano Jr., and Simon Savala Jr.

Dolores Ovon Terrell

August 9, 1938 - June 13, 2023

Dolores Ovon Terrell, of Edna, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the age of 84.  She was born in LaWard, Texas on August 9, 1938, to the late Charles Eugene Fox and Ruth Fitzpatrick Fox.

Dolores was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Dolores grew up in Lolita and LaWard on various ranches her dad worked on. She met her high school sweetheart, Bobby Joe Terrell, her freshman year at Industrial High.  When she wasn’t busy playing basketball or volleyball, she was running around with her lifelong friends of Delores Jean, Sister, and Betty. On March 17, 1956, she married Bobby Joe and began a 20-year career as a Navy wife. She was very proud to be a Navy wife and loved the travelling and comradery the military offered.  Bobby Joe went on to his new station in the Philippines while Dolores stayed behind to finish high school.  In August of 1956, she got on a train to travel to San Francisco to catch a boat that would take 3 weeks to reach her new husband in the Philippines.  They would be stationed there for 3 years before returning back to the United States with their marriage on solid ground.  They travelled all over the United States: Washington state to Florida.  They made lifelong friends in the navy that she still kept up with until her passing.  When they finally made their way back to Texas, they welcomed their first child, Lisa Gay, in 1964.  In 1968, they made their way to Adak, Alaska.  Their “little Eskimo”, Tina Gale, was born there in 1968.  When they returned to the lower 48, they prepped for their next adventure in Naples, Italy. Dolores travelled alone to Naples with their 5-year-old and baby, and Bobby Joe met her there. The 3-year assignment turned out to be only 9 months.  The Vietnam War was in full force.  They came back to Virginia for Bobby to finish out his Navy career.  Bobby Joe ran a shop for the base and after hours, he and his team worked on POW/MIA wives’ cars for free.  Dolores would fix the wives tea/coffee and visit with families while the guys worked.  In 1973 they retired from the navy and returned to their roots in Texas, living first in Victoria and then moving to Edna. Dolores filled her days taking care of her family, being a homeroom mom, sewing, and reading.  Dolores loved to read and went to the library weekly getting 10-15 books at a time.  Bobby Joe had promised Dolores she could get her hair done weekly once he was out of the navy.  She got her hair done every Thursday at Mac’s Beauty Salon by Janie until 2017.  She went there for her hair as much as for the gossip.  NOTHING got in the way of her hair appointment.  In 1977, Dolores and Bobby Joe started preparing some family land off of the Navidad to move permanently there. Dolores decided that since her kids were growing up and didn’t need her as much, to go to work outside the home.  She began a 20-year career with Dr. Joseph Bitter at the Edna Veterinary Clinic working part-time. Dr. Bitter said when Dolores retired, he would too.  She retired in 1998.   In their retirement, they loved on their 5 grandchildren, visited the Grand Canyon, and pursued hobbies.  Dolores faced off breast cancer, macular degeneration, and open-heart surgery. In December 2012, she faced one of her biggest challenges when Bobby Joe passed away after 56 years of marriage. As her health and eyesight continued to fail, she moved to Victoria in 2014 to be closer to her daughters.  Dolores loved living at Morada Independent Living.  She loved socializing, playing cards, and running around town with her girls.  In the last 3 years of her life, she lost most of her vision and was on oxygen. She stayed in her apartment, still loving to read, but now listening to books on tape and getting her hair done on Thursdays in a little shop in Victoria and eating Twix or Oreos.  Dolores had a life full of adventure and love.  She loved to laugh, long and hard.

Dolores is survived by her daughters, Lisa Alpeter (Mark) and Tina Terrell; sister Shirley Melvin (Maurice) and brother James Fox (Lydia); grandchildren: Sara Alpeter, Morgan Garcia, Meghan Garcia, Ryan Alpeter, and Matthew Garcia; great-grandchildren: Addison Benitez, Mason Benitez, and Rylee Garcia and various nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ruth Fox; and her husband, Bobby Joe Terrell.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Garcia, Ryan Alpeter, Mark Alpeter, Henry (Buzzy) Whitley, Dennis Whitley, and Trevor Kirgan.

            “Leave It To God”

Does the path seem rough and steep?

            Leave it to God.

Do you sow, but fail to reap

            Leave it to God.

Yield to Him your human will.

Listen child like, and be still,

Know that love your mind can fill

            Leave it to God.

Is your life an uphill fight?

            Leave it to God.

Do you struggle for the right

            Leave it to God.

Though the way he dread and long.

            Sorrow give place to song,

            Good must triumph over wrong.

            Leave it to God.

He will make it plain to you

            Leave it to God.

            Serve Him faithfully today.

He will guide you all the way

Simply trust Him, watch and pray

            Leave it to God.

Mrs. Thornell was an active member of the Presbyterian Church; a woman who enjoyed her church work, and the association of her friends.  Throughout her long illness she bore her suffering with Christian fortitude, and her main concern seemed to be that she was causing others inconviences.

Fifty years ago last Christmas Day she was united in marriage to Mr. A.M. Thornell of Hallettsville, Texas.  For many years they resided at Burlington, Iowa.  Since his death Mrs. Thornell had resided in Edna where she enjoyed a large circle of friends.

Mildred Fay Tipton, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the age of 95. She was born in Louise, Texas on November 7, 1925, to the late Ira William Jones and Nola Pearl Goode Jones.

Mildred grew up during the Great Depression. Times were hard and everyone worked, including the children. When there was cotton to be picked she often had to miss school to pick. When she did go to school, she and her brothers and sisters walked down long dirt roads or rode double on a bike to get there or to the bus. She always said, “What a privilege it was to get to go to school!” She graduated in 1944 from LaWard High School as Valedictorian of her class of 11.

After high school, Mildred secured a two-year contract to teach at the one-teacher, one-room Arenosa School out of Edna. Some of the students walked to school, some rode a little mini bus and one girl even rode her horse to school every day. The school had two little outdoor restrooms and an outside drinking fountain. Her salary was $125 per month. She loved her job and said, “It was unbelievable how quickly the children learned.”

A few of her students who are in their 80’s would still write to her and send her cards on holidays. Some would even drop by to see her occasionally. They still called her “Miss Jones.”

It was while she was teaching at the Arenosa School that she met her future husband, John Girrard, “Artie Tipton.” She said, “He was tall and handsome with dark curly hair.” They married on March 15, 1946 and celebrated 51 and a half years together.

She was a faithful member of the Robison Street Church of Christ.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Rose Volkmer; daughter in law, Donna Tipton; sons, Terry Tipton and wife, Lesli, Bill Tipton and wife, Charlotte, Charles Tipton and Nancy Harris; her loving sisters Helen McKey and Frankie Gerhard and husband Paul all of Edna, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her legacy also includes 16 grandchildren: Stephanie Hale Kaiser (Brian), Jeffrey Tipton (Courtney), Joel Tipton, Amy Tipton Crutchfield (Brian), Kacy Tipton Fashik (Curt), Lane Tipton, Lance Tipton (Kendall), Katie Rose Tipton Adkins (Jack), Jill Tipton Crenshaw (Kris), Jake Tipton, Megan Tipton, Lindsey Tipton Floyd (Chris), Matthew Volkmer (Allison), Anna Volkmer Zahn (Matt), Mark Tipton (Kendall), Lance Nelson (Karla), Candice Nelson Gallion (Michael).

Another beautiful blessing was her 34 great grandchildren.

Proceeding her in death were her parents, Ira W. and Nola Pearl Jones; husband, John Girrard “Artie” Tipton; son, Mike Tipton; son-in-law, Robert Volkmer; brothers, Cecil Jones, Leroy Jones, and Raymond Lee Jones.

Barbara Joann Smith Tise went to her heavenly home, rejoicing, on May 22, 2023. She loved the Lord and lived her life to let His light shine in her! She was born November 5, 1937, in Eagle Lake, Texas to Henry Bertice and Milly Matula Smith.

Barbara lived most of her childhood and young adult life on the IV Duncan Ranch in Eagle Lake, Texas, where her father was the ranch foreman. Situated along the banks of the Colorado River, where the family often enjoyed picnics and camp outs, The Ranch was a priceless treasure for Barbara. She was an only child but enjoyed the company of her cousins, especially Lucy Bryant Anderson, Linda Bryant White and Natalie Matula Dupree, who were like sisters to her.

Having skipped first grade due to her advanced academic achievements, Barbara graduated from Eagle Lake High School as the Salutatorian of her class at the age of 16. She was affectionately known as Peanut by her classmates. She enjoyed a close bond for many years with a group of those classmates, known as the Ladybugs.

Barbara married the love of her life, Sammy Tise, on June 22, 1956. Together they raised their two children, Kathy and Bert, whom she loved dearly. The family loved traveling together, especially long summer vacations, visiting historical sights and to see Bert and his family after he moved to New Mexico. Barbara and Sammy also had a foreign exchange son, Geir Erikson, from Norway. Later, after Sammy passed on, she married Sammy’s brother, Clarence Lee Tise. She joked that at least she didn’t have to change her name when she remarried. Barbara and Clarence loved their life together, enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Barbara had a long career as a bookkeeper, working in several different industries. She went to work for The Renger Family in Hallettsville in 1979 and loved the Renger family with whom she worked for and with 3 generations, over several decades. In addition to her family and work, Barbara was active in her church and other civic organizations. She was instrumental in forming L.A.M.B. (Lavaca Assistance Ministry Body), a food and clothing pantry in Hallettsville and worked tirelessly alongside Sammy with Lavaca County Crimestoppers.

September 15, 1931 ~ June 24, 2020

My mom, Evelyn was born to the late Rudolph and Mary Tupa Hadash on September 15, 1931 in Hungerford, Texas being the oldest daughter of their seven children. God called her home on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 and she will be laid to rest beside my dad, Eddie Tomanek, Jr., her life-long dancing partner of 45 years. At the time of her death she was a young 88 years old. Mom was a nurturing woman of faith and wonderful mother; she was a great "down home" cook and baker. The homemade "GI Joe" bread (as Dad called it), cinnamon rolls, noodle soup, chicken fried steaks, chocolate pie (oh my!), cinnamon rolls (so good they're worth mentioning twice.), and kolache that she made for her family and friends were indescribably delicious! She retire as assistant cafeteria manager with Edna ISD with 30 years of service. After Dad's death in 1995, she became a caregiver for the loved ones of several Edna families and also became a member of the Blue Belle Auxiliary at Jackson County Hospital.

Mom's memory will be cherished by myself, Larry Tomanek and my wife, Kathy and her two grandsons and their families; Jared Tomanek and wife Denise, and great-grandchildren; Dominic, Anya and Anthony Tomanek; Clay Tomanek and wife; Delia, and great-grandchildren; Elijah and Emma Tomanek, and Aubrey, A.J. and Mason Garcia; her siblings; Henry and Barbara Hadash, Sylvia and Leon Kutach, Jerome Hadash, and Margaret and Richard Tyler, nieces and nephews, neighbors, friends, and her Dugger House Family.  She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two brothers; Victor and George Hadash.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 26th at 3:00 pm at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton, Texas with the Rev Robert Knippenberg, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating.  Since we are all vulnerable to the coronavirus, social distancing and face masks are strongly encouraged.  honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Because of these pandemic times and in lieu of the post-burial reception, we have decided to provide a memorial meal for the homeless at Christ's Kitchen in Victoria. To all the Dugger House caregivers, Linda and Wolf, a special thank you for making the Dugger House Mom's "home away from home" for the past three years. Our sincere thanks to the staff of Hospice of South Texas and the Dover House for their compassionate care. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust, Victoria, TX 77901 or to St. Joseph High School, 110 E. Red River St., Victoria, TX 77901.  Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Ganado and Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St. Edna, TX 77957, 361-782-2152.

Mrs. Emma Traylor

Another member of a pioneer Jackson County family has answered the last roll call and many hearts are sad.

MRS. EMMA TRAYLOR, relic of the late MR. JOSIAH CLAIBORNE TRAYLOR, passed away at her home in this city (Edna) Thursday of last week, March, 10th, 1932.  She had suffered from heart trouble for several years and this malady caused death to come suddenly, while she was enjoying her family circle some hours before her regular time for retiring for the night.  Death apparently came without pain.  While the suddenness of death was a shock to her loved ones and friends, there was consolation in knowing that she was spared the suffering that is the lot of many.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, REV. C. H. SPENCE conducting the service at the home.  The remains were laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery beside those of MR. (JOSIAH) TRAYLOR, who preceded her to the grave several years.  The floral offering was beautiful and profuse.

MRS. TRAYLOR’S maiden name was CHARLIE EMMA KEIZER a member of a pioneer and prominent Jackson County family.  She was born in this county September 17th, 1859, and spent her entire life here.  September 6th, 1875, she was united in marriage to MR. JOSIAH CLAIBORNE TRAYLOR, also member of a prominent and pioneer Jackson County family.  He was also a native of this county and lived his life here.  Mrs. Traylor was identified with many of the civic movements of the town in its early history, and she was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years.

She possessed a cheerful and friendly disposition, and was loved and admired by all who knew her.  She was a devoted mother, and in the family circle where her real worth was known, she was an inspiration and object of true devotion.

She was the mother of twelve children, six boys and six daughters.  She is survived by four sons and four daughters, namely, Messrs EUGENE TRAYLOR of San Angelo; CHAMP TRAYLOR of Los Angles, Calif., JOE BAILEY TRAYLOR of San Antonio, and BILL TRAYLOR of Refugio; and Mesdames A. C. EGG, S. W. ROGERS and H. B. MCDOWELL and Miss BEULAH TRAYLOR, all of Edna; and also one sister, Miss ELLA KEIZER of San Antonio, is left to mourn her passing.

The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy.
