Rachel Siller Sanchez

April 23, 1939 - March 4, 2025

Rachel Sanchez, a beloved member of the Edna, Texas community, gracefully departed this world on March 4th, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on April 23, 1939, in Los Fresnos, Texas, Rachel's journey took her from the spirited halls of Industrial ISD, where she was a proud member of the pep squad, to the vibrant spaces of her salon—a business she ran with the flair and finesse that befitted a diva and fashionista of her caliber. Later, she found a fulfilling career at Mobil Oil Company until her retirement, making indelible marks on all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.

Rachel was first united in holy matrimony with Reynaldo Sanchez on March 3, 1962. Their marriage blossomed with love and laughter until Reynaldo's passing in 2010. In 2015, she found love once more and married Joe Garza, with whom she shared the remaining years of her cherished life.

Her culinary talents were legendary, and you simply couldn’t walk past her kitchen without being drawn in for a hearty home-cooked meal, served with a side of engaging conversation that truly left you richer in spirit. Her door was always open, her table always set, and her heart forever welcoming.

Never one to be still, Rachel was frequently spotted tearing up the dance floors in her dazzling outfits right up until her final weeks, her zest for life unchanged by the passing years. Outside of the dance halls, you’d find her hands deep in the soil of her beloved garden, cultivating nature’s beauty with the same love she cultivated her family and friendships.

Rachel's community involvement was as vibrant as her personality. She was recognized with the Golden Crescent Council of Governments Regional Citizenship Award, honoring her as an extraordinary volunteer. Her advocacy work with the GI Forum for Hispanic students in Edna, along with her role as a Texas Master Gardener, showcased her dedication to enriching the lives of others.

Rachel's legacy is lovingly carried forward by her surviving husband, Joe Garza, and her children: Dora McGilvray (Dan), Rene Siller Sanchez (Lorena), Ruby Sanchez (David Webel), Rebecca Gutierrez, and Ray Siller Sanchez. She is survived by seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Though preceded in death by her first husband, Reynaldo, her spirit remains ever-present in the hearts of her family and community.

Services for Rachel Siller Sanchez will be held on Friday, March 14th, 2025, with the Visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The celebration will follow at 11:00 a.m., all in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Raymond Stevens Shelton

August 1, 1945 – August 18, 2025

Raymond Stevens Shelton was born on August 1, 1945, at the Laura Eldridge Memorial Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas. He was born just six days before the Atomic fell on Hiroshima. His parents, Herbert Raymond Shelton, Jr. and Mary Stevens Norton were apprehensive about raising a child in such uncertain times. Yet peace prevailed, and the family grew with the addition of three siblings: Valerie Katherine, Nancy Louise and Carl Lee.

Steve, as he was known, cherished his childhood in Sugar Land. He was deeply woven into the community fabric-- playing with the neighborhood children, attending the First Presbyterian Church, and being an active member there, attending school, participating in all the sports, football being his favorite. His high school team reached the state championship in his junior year, a memory he held dear despite not winning. After graduating from John Foster Dulles High School, Steve attended Texas A&M and Texas A&I on football scholarships but left college to join Nalco Chemical Company in Sugar Land in October 1965.

On December 22, 1966, Steve married his soulmate, Rose Marie Alford at the First Baptist Church in Sugar Land. Their 58-year marriage, celebrated in 2024 was filled with adventures and brought four children: Kacy Marie, Tracy Leann, Steven Wade and Molly Beth.

In May 1973, Steve relocated his family to a farm in El Campo, Texas purchased by his father for a joint cattle-raising venture. The farm became the heart of their family life. Steve retired from Nalco Chemical Company in June 1978 after 12 ˝ years, built a home on the farm and started working for Exxon Company USA in Vanderbilt, Texas in June 1978. He thrived in his career, faith, community, loved the outdoors, loved fishing and spending time camping with his family and friends. He loved to dance and was President of the Plainview Dance Club for years. Steve and Rose could really cut a rug on the dance floor and at times the other dancers would stop just to watch them dance. He belonged to the Young Farmers of America organization for many years, making many friends. He belonged to and was very active in the Methodist Church belonging to the Pairs & Spares group and holding the position of Lay Leader for several years. Steve is Past Master of the El Campo Masonic Lodge #918. He loved his Lodge buddies and visited with them often. He was always helping out wherever and whenever anyone needed him.

In 1997, Exxon transferred Steve to East Texas to the Overton field separating him from his family for five years—a period he deeply regretted. He was not happy living away and was overjoyed when ExxonMobil finally moved him back to the El Campo area. Steve retired from ExxonMobil in August 2003 after 25 years of service. Post-retirement, he worked briefly with Boll Weavil Eradication in 2004 and later with Driving Safety Services in El Campo, enjoying the proximity to home. He retired permanently after several years.

Retirement allowed Steve to indulge in fishing, camping, farm work, and time with his children and grandchildren, visiting friends, watching movies and having endless conversations with whoever he could find to listen. He never met a stranger and never missed an opportunity for a good conversation. Steve lived with integrity, honesty, and fairness, guided by his faith in Jesus Christ.

His life was lived to honor God. He was a fair and just man, full of love for not only his family but all of mankind. Steve knew the value of friendship and practiced it often, treating everyone with love and respect.

Steve passed away, leaving behind a legacy as a devotional husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Alford Shelton, his daughters; Kacy Marie Bain (Keith); Tracy Leann Appling; Molly Beth Volek (Darren), a son; Steven Wade Shelton ( Amanda); Nine grandchildren, Amber Rose Miles (Jacob) and Ethan Luke Bain (Channing); RaeAnna Leigh Appling and Steven Wyatt Appling; Charles Stevens Shelton and Sophie Evelyn Shelton; and Kaiden Hunter Volek, Kason Lane Volek and Kenton Ray Volek; Five great grandchildren, Cullen Miles and Slade Miles, Evelyn Bain, Wyatt Bain and Holly Bain; Two sisters, Valerie Katherine, wife of Ralph Kodell, Nancy Louise Pruitt, and One Brother, Carl Lee Shelton and wife, Barbara. Also, by six nieces, five grandnieces and eight grandnephews.

Graveside services will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 23 at St. Procopius Cemetery, 1693 CR 319, Louise Tx, 77455.

Bertram Henry Shoopman

November 23, 1931 — July 24, 2025

Bertram Henry Shoopman passed away on 24 July 2025 in Victoria, TX at the age of 93.

Born in Somerset, Kentucky on November 23, 1931, he was the son of Bert Shoopman and Ritchey (Jones) Shoopman. He grew up in Texas, where he became an Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow.

Through national competitive exams, he was awarded a Presidential Appointment to the U.S.

Naval Academy, where he graduated With Distinction in June 1953. He served on the heavy cruiser Bremerton before attending Submarine School in New London, CT. He served aboard USS Tench SS-417 and USS Croaker SS-246.

Upon leaving the Navy, Bert accepted a job at Exxon Baytown’s engineering department.

After Hurricane Carla decimated his family’s house in 1962 in Baytown, Bert rebuilt the house himself (after work and on weekends), discovering his love of swinging a hammer. A few years later (after work and on weekends), he almost completely singlehandedly built Dixie a dream home in Baytown, where the family lived until he accepted an overseas assignment and moved the family to Okinawa, Japan. There, Bert served as Mechanical Superintendent during the building and startup of Exxon’s Nissan Seikyu Refinery in Okinawa, Japan.

For fun, he ordered plans and built a 22-foot sailboat in the garage of their home and then took pleasure in sailing it with family and friends.

Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to Kentucky to the family farm, where he and his father enjoyed life as gentlemen farmers, raising registered Black Angus cattle and bringing in their own hay.

After his parents had passed away, Bert and Dixie left farming life and moved back to Dripping Springs and Rockport, Texas where Bert realized a lifelong dream, sailing his own Cheoy Lee 38-foot sloop.

Dixie’s happy childhood memories of time with her grandparents in Edna and summers in Port Alto with her aunts Jessie Lee and Meadie Pumphrey inspired the Shoopmans to move to Edna, Texas to spend their last retirement years.

Throughout his life, Bert was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on numerous leadership committees. He helped in constructing homes for Habitat for Humanity for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dixie Lee Williams Shoopman; daughters Mary Sue King, Gretchen Bernabei and Laurel Ann Smith; his son, Hank Shoopman; and eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Alvin Joe Svoboda

November 20, 1937  -  December 23, 2025

Alvin Joe Svoboda passed away on December 23, 2025. He was born in Wallis, Texas on November 20, 1937 to George and Julie Ann (Supak) Svoboda. The family moved to the White Hall area near Ganado in 1939. He started school in the White Hall School. This and other small schools were consolidated into the Ganado Independent School District in 1947. His parents built a new house in south Ganado in 1947 that became his lifelong home.

He received a home movie projector and some children’s films as a gift when he was a child. He played the films for everyone who would watch them. This interest carried over to the Ganado Theatre which opened in 1941. He became a relief projectionist in 1954, and the main projectionist in 1955, manager in 1973. He leased the theatre in 1977 and managed it as his own business. He purchased the theatre in 1980 and started improving it immediately by adding air conditioning, more comfortable seating, hot dogs, and nachos with cheese.

Alvin was inducted into the army in 1960, did basic training at Fort Hood (near Kileen), and was transferred to Fort Bliss (near El Paso) where he trained on handling and deployment of Nike Hercules missiles. This unit was scheduled to deploy to Germany just before the Berlin crisis arose. The troops, already in Germany, had their time extended for six months to handle the crisis so Alvin’s deployment was cancelled three days before they were to leave for Germany. He was sent to a typing class and became a Company Clerk. His unit was then scheduled to deploy to Florida in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis, but Alvin only had 30 days left on his 2-year obligation, so he was not eligible to deploy. The army found a comfortable assignment to consume these 30 days.

Alvin was a bookkeeper at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church from 1973 to 1975. He was also the school bus driver for the Catholic school. He was a devoted Catholic his entire life.

His maternal grandparents lived next to his family’s home. They spoke mostly Czech. Alvin became fluent in Czech, able to read and write in the language. He was a subscriber to a South Texas Czech newspaper, Našinec (“Ours” in English), and was published in this Czech language paper many times over the years. This was the last Czech language newspaper in Texas that was published for 104 years until 2018. Over the years many people brought friends and relatives (visiting Texas from the Czech Republic) to Alvis’s house in need of a translator. He made many lifelong friends that way, and he would get the chance to visit them one day.

Alvin believed in gathering the gifts of nature. He gathered dewberries to make pies, figs and peaches to make preserves, and grapes for wine. He made wine for over 50 years out of anything he could ferment and enjoyed teaching others how to make it. He was a man that shared his wisdom, he never denied knowledge to anyone who sought it. He also made the best Czech style sour kraut. Every January he bought a whole 50 lbs case of cabbage when it was on sale. He shredded the heads after cutting them in half on his ancient family strouhač (“grater”) over the sink. He would add fresh dill and sometimes onions or jalapeńos. Some years he made 15 gallons of the smelly but very tasty dish. Before his mom passed in 1998, he had no idea how to cook. After eating frozen dinners for several years, he was motivated to learn. He became one of the best cooks and bakers. His method was always slow and methodical; he never skipped a step. (He often added extra steps!) His favorite pastime was fishing. He would drop everything to go fishing anytime. He freshwater fished mostly for crappie and catfish. He saltwater fished for trout, red fish, black drum, sheep head, and hated hardheads with passion. He gigged flounder while wading in the cold shallow water. He hand-picked oysters and shrimped with his personal boat. He was happiest while fishing.

Alvin took several trips with longtime friend Dr. James Cantu. In 2005, they flew to California and drove up the coast to Oregon. They stopped at almost every scenic ocean view, found a great cheese factory, and drank wine in Napa Valley to end the trip. In 2007, they flew into Buffalo, NY for a visit with friends in Niagara Falls. Alvin saw the Falls from the American side and Canadian side. They also made one of Alvin’s bucket list dreams come true with a visit to the Czech Republic October 2012. He was able to visit the home where his grandfather was born in 1865. He eat an apple from a tree on the property so that a piece of that place would always be a part of him. Alvin was able to visit 4 world capitals as part of that trip: Washington, DC; Prague, CZ; Vienna, AUT; and London, ENG.

He is survived by his sister Charlene Oehl (Marvin), his niece Kristi Mishler (Dan), and three great nieces (Emma, Molly, and Anna Mishler). He is predeceased by his parents and nephew Mark Oehl.

Services with include a visitation at 10:00am, Rosary at 10:30am, and funeral mass at 11:00am all at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Ganado, TX. Interment will follow immediately at the Assumption Catholic Cemetery. A gathering of remembrance and celebration of Alvin’s life at the Ganado Theatre will follow the burial. All are welcome. Bringing a dish or snack to the theatre is encouraged.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations, 208 W. Pearl, LaGrange, Texas. Family and friends can view and sign the guestbook online at www.lagrangefunerals.com .
