On Monday, January 7, the Lord took from this yale of tears to Himself in heaven the soul of Mrs. Wilhelmina Schneider, the wife of Fred J. Schneider, the wife of Fred J. Schneider, who resides about five miles southwest of Edna. She was born August 8, 1885, near Austin, Texas, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Kilem. On Christmas Day, 1902, she was married to Fred J. Schneider. This union was blessed with two sons and five daughters, all of whom were reared to man and womanhood: Freddy Schneider of Edna, Texas, Mrs. Lillie Taylor, Friona, Texas, Mrs. Dora Deyo, Waco, Texas, Mrs. Alma Gaubatz, Edna, Mrs. Melinda Stephens, New Comb, Mississippi; Mrs. Marie Kenne, Bay City, Texas, Walter Lee Schneider, Columbus, Texas. The church of her choice was the Lutheran Church of which she became a member more than forty years ago. Upon her the Lord in His wisdom, laid more than an ordinary load of sickness and suffering. In this school of affliction, Mrs. Schneider learned the important but blessed lesson that “Tribulation worketh patience; and patience experience and experience hope and hope maketh not ashamed.” Now the Lord in His mercy delivered her and has bestowed upon her the crown of glory. She is survived by her husband, her mother, four brothers, five sisters, all seven children and fourteen grandchildren. Last writes were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock, with burial in the Edna Cemetery. Staples, H. K. Courtney Stuart Simons,
Sr. Just before going to press this morning we learn of the passing of our friend and neighbor, one of Edna’s most beloved citizens, and one of Jackson County’s oldest native sons, Mr. Courtney S Simons (Sr.). His health began to fail about a year ago but he was able to be up and about until about two weeks ago. At this writing no definite arrangements had been made for the funeral service hour. Staples, H. K. Edna Weekly Herald (Edna, Tex.), Vol. 39, No. 24, Ed. 1 Thursday, April 25, 1946, newspaper, April 25, 1946, page 1. Funeral Rites For Mr. C.S. Simons Held Here Sunday A pall of genuine sorrow and sadness fell over Edna and Jackson County Thursday morning, May 30, when it was announced that Mr. C.S. Simmons, Sr. had passed away at his home in this city (Edna). Notwithstanding the fact that those near and dear to him realized he was afflicted with an incurable disease, the announcement of his passing was a shock and source of great sorrow, for this man had been more than a mere good citizen, and he was loved and respected as few men are in our day and time. The funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock at the Methodist Church where a great host of friends gathered to pay their last sorrowing tribute of love. The service was conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. C. Young, assisted by Rev. L. E. Barrett of the Baptist Church and Rev. John Newton of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery where rest the remains of his parents and a large number of other relatives and lifelong friends. The pallbearers were: A. C. Egg, G. E. Menefee, E. D. White, O. B. Fenner, W.W. Traylor, and H. K. Staples. The following is a brief history of the life of Mr. Simons: “Courtney Stuart Simons, Sr., oldest son of George Francis and Flora Wells Simons, and oldest and only surviving member of this family, was born July 17, 1864 at the Simons old homestead at the junction of the Lavaca and Navidad Rivers, called Egypt, Jackson County, Texas. “He was united in matrimony to Miss Sara Gertrude Laughter, oldest daughter of William Pierce and Sara Gertrude (Kerr) Laughter, and granddaughter of Major James Kerr, at the old Laughter place east of the Navidad River February 4, 1886. To this union six children were born. Those surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sara Gertrude Simons, Thomas Kerr Simons, Louis Lowe Simons, Courtney Stuart Simons, Jr., Williamson Wells Simons, Mrs. Miriam Iris Traylor. There were 13 grandchildren, one dying in infancy and one killed in World War II. Eleven living. Three great-grandchildren survive, with a host of relatives and friends of all creeds and different colors. He united with the Edna Methodist Church back in 1884, being one of the five senior members of this church. The others (joining the Edna Methodist church in 1884) being his wife, E.P. Simons, Milam T. Simons and Maurice K. Simons, all coming into the church the same year. Practically all his church life he has been a trustee of the Methodist church. His name is carved on the corner stone with the names of the other members of the board of trustees at the time this church was built in 1911.” As we stated above, that is a brief history of one of the best men this writer has ever had the pleasure of knowing, and we knew him over a period of 50 to 60 years, and we knew him intimately. “What makes men good Christians make them good citizens” and that statement was exemplified in the life of Mr. C. S. Simons. “to know how to grow old is the master work of wisdom,” and that may be true, but Mr. Simons was not an old man despite the fact he had passed the years allotted to man. His agile body and his bright mind kept him young up to almost the time he was taken. This writer will miss him dearly as a friend, but we shall also miss him as a source of information regarding the early history of our town and county. He was born during the Civil War. In his youth he heard from the lips of his parents and their friends of the early history of Jackson County. We have often marveled at his retentive memory. The high lights of the history of his native county, the date on which they occurred and the interesting details of each could be recalled by Mr. Simons as accurately as if they had been recorded in a book. And this wonderful memory was not in any manner clouded by advanced years. Mr. Simons was a remarkable man in other respects. Smut and vulgarity never fell from his lips and his friends had such high regard for his principles and feelings that they never used ugly language in his presence. However, he was by no means a prude; he was just a good man who loved the wholesome and beautiful things of life and despised the base and vulgar. Many chapters could be written about his love for his fellowman. He was truly a sociable man. He delighted in the association of his fellowman. “What do we live for, if it is not to make life less difficult for others” seems to have been an impelling force in his character. We shall all long mourn the passing of this noble character. For more than 50 years Mr. Simons operated a cotton gin in Edna, first being associated with his father-in-law, the late Mr. W.P. Laughter, under the firm name of Laughter & Simons, and after the death of Mr. Laughter, under his own name. In business circles, like ever other avenue of life, Mr. Simons was considered a man of impeccable character. Out of town relatives and friends attending Mr. C.S. Simons’ funeral in Edna Sunday were: Mr. and Mrs. F.G. McKinney, Mr. M.E. Mansell, Mr. P.M. Warlick, Mr. C.T. Woods, Mr. George F. Simons (Jr.), Mr. V.J. Rose, Houston; Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Laughter (Jr.), San Antonio, Mrs. Alma Manley and Mrs. Marion Kunz, Victoria; Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bethea and daughters Mary Sue and Corinne, Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Will Traylor, LaWard, Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Simons, Miss Mary Archer Simons, Austin, W.W. Simons and W.W. Simons, Jr., Bakersfield, California. Staples, H. K. Edna Weekly Herald (Edna, Tex.), Vol. 39, No. 30, Ed. 1 Thursday, June 6, 1946, newspaper, June 6, 1946, page 1.

She then taught school near Hondo where she met her future husband. They were married on Nov. 1, 1885 and lived on a sheep ranch near Eagle Pass for several years. About 1891 the family moved to Beeville, and a few years later to Edna, which was “home” for about 30 years. Mr. Simpson served as postmaster for 16 years. In 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Simpson moved to Austin where he died in 1940. For the past 3 years Mrs. Simpson had made her home with the children, and died in Buffalo (Texas). She is survived by six of the seven children. A daughter Lena (Mrs. R.O. Little) died in Houston in 1944. The other children are: Rev. Fisher Simpson, on the staff of the General Board of Education of the Methodist Church, Nashville, Tenn., Mary (Mrs. R.E. Ledbetter) Buffalo; Fannie (Mrs. John Bethea) Wharton; Sue (Mrs. H.H. Lewis) Winters; Corinne (Mrs. E.J. Compton) Texon; Emily Joyce (Mrs. H.A. Keen) Houston. There are also 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Surviving brothers and sisters are Thomas A. Fisher, Austin; Mrs. Gordon Laughter, Edna; Mrs. J.S. Fly, Hondo; Mrs. Murry Wentworth, Utopia; and Mrs. Rollie Harper, Marfa. Throughout her life Mrs. Simpson was actively identified with the Methodist Church. There was never a debate in the home about going to Sunday School, that was a regular activity for the whole family. All the children grew up in the church and are closely related to its work. They bear living witness to the Christian influence of their parents. The Women’s Missionary Society was the center of interest and loyalty for Mrs. Simpson to the end. She served in many ways, and her children remember her as one who did the kitchen duties for the suppers and other occasions. For many years Mrs. Simpson was identified with various phases of the work in University Church, Austin. The long life of this Christian mother will continue to wield its influence in those who come after her. Staples, H. K. M.L. lived most of his life in Ganado, Texas, served in the U.S. Army as a mechanic and retired as a rice farmer. M.L. had many passions in life, and foremost was his love of music. He sang gospel and played guitar in his church and formed a band together with area friends in which he sang and played the guitar as well as the banjo. He very much enjoyed "pickin and grinnin" with family and friends. He also received many requests to sing at funerals, and he never denied these requests. Along with his love of music, M.L. also enjoyed hunting and fishing. M.L. laughed and sang all of the time and when he wasn't singing he was sharing the latest jokes. This, along with his easy going attitude, is certainly what contributed to his long and healthy life. M.L. had many proud moments in life, but one of the proudest was just 7 days after his 88th birthday, when he learned that his newest great-grandchild had been named after him. Morgan Lorraine Hanselman, or "Little M.L." as he called her, brought great joy to him and kept him entertained and laughing during visits. Gramps, as he was called by most of our family, loved Easter. He was always a favorite member of the Easter Egg Hunt, up to the age of 90, he still hunted eggs with the grandchildren each year. ML lived in Prairie View Village of El Campo for 9 years where he enjoyed playing dominoes, bingo, and dining out every weekend for lunch. He made many friends and was loved by all who knew him. A special thanks to his caregiver and friends who's care and companionship meant the world to him. He loved each and everyone of you. At the request of the family, a private burial ceremony will be held at a later date.

Mrs. William O. Smith passed away at her home three miles southwest of Ganado September 26, 1950 of a heart ailment. Her sudden passing was a shock to her loved ones and friends, as she had been going about her household duties the same as usual all day Tuesday. Some time in the night she received the summons to come home on High to her eternal rest. Mrs. Smith was born Camille Crawford, November 9, 1889, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Crawford. Her mother passed away in her infancy and she was reared by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. l. Dickie. She was a talented musician and attended Coronal Institute. She was united in marriage to William O. Smith April 8, 1917. She united with the Methodist church in early childhood and rendered a half century of faithful service for her Master. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her. She possessed a wonderful personality which gained friends for her among both old and young. Her home was a sweet haven for all who entered there. She was a good neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, and ready to speak a word of cheer to those who were heavy hearted. The beautiful floral offering bore testimony of their love and esteem for her. The passing of Mrs. Smith brings to an end two noted families who rendered faithful service to our country as she was the last in line of the J. L. Dickie and Samuel Crawford families. She leaves her husband, loves ones, and a host of friends to mourn her untimely passing. Funeral services were held at the Ganado Methodist Church September 29, 1950, with Reverend C. M.
