Edna Woman, Son Die In
Accident
Hallettsville--A 38-year-old Jackson County
woman and her 8-month-old son drowned Tuesday when their car
careened off a bridge over the Navidad River and landed nose-first
in shoulder-deep water.
Adele Irene Siecko of Edna and her infant son,
Michael A. Siecko Jr. were both pronounced dead at the scene by
Lavaca County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Mickey Weiser of
Hallettsville.
The bodies were taken to Kubena Funeral Home
in Hallettsville and later were transferred to Slavik Funeral Home
in Edna, where funeral arrangements are pending.
State Trooper Paul Waggener of Yoakum said
that the woman was driving south on Lavaca County Road 14, about 22
miles south of Hallettsville, when she lost control of her car and
slid off the road.
"When she tried to steer her car back onto the
road, she hit the bridge abutment and traveled about 15 feet
straddling the bridge railing before falling to the river below," he
said.
Waggoner said that the car was not visible
from the road and estimated that the accident occurred about 5:30 p.
m.
A passerby reported the accident after
spotting the rear-end of the victim's four-door 1978 Oldsmobile
jutting out of the river. She had stopped to investigate tire marks
and freshly matted grass on the side of the road.
Waggener said that the woman was pulled from
the car while it was still submerged. The baby, however, was not
discovered until the car was being removed from the water.
"The child was found buckled in a child's
safety set mounted on the passenger side of the front seat,"
Waggener said.

Bruce Milby Strane, 92, of Edna, Texas
passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020.
He was born in
Houston, Texas on October 13, 1927 to the late Dewey A. Strane and Wilma
Milby Strane, the second of their four children. His siblings, older
brother, Bernard, younger brother Robert Stapleton Strane and younger
sister, Peggy Strane Clark, all preceded Bruce in death.
He is survived by
his wife, Carroll Joyce Watson Strane, his daughters, JoLynne Strane
Littlefield and husband, Jack, Kim Ellen Strane Weidmann and husband,
Dr. Eric W. Weidmann, and Carroll Adrian (Bee) Strane Wright, and
husband Bobby Jack Wright. His five granddaughters survive him as
well, McKenna Wright Hamilton and husband, Spencer Hamilton, Melia
Camille Wright Bailey, and husband, Matt Bailey, Micaelan Delaney
Wright, Mara Carroll Weidmann and Leah Alexis Weidmann. His
great-grandchildren, a recent blessing in his life, survive to honor him
as well: Nolan, Harper, and AnnaLee Hamilton, as well as Jett and Price
Bailey.
As a youth in Edna,
he attended the public schools as well as Peacock Academy in San
Antonio, Texas, along with his older brother, and his friend, Herbert
Lee Melton. He was graduated from Edna High School in the fall term
late in 1944. He, his brother Bobby Strane, Roy Dave Curlee, Billy
Corrigan, Tommy Dunham, the Green brothers, Leon Kilgore, Narcisco
Lopez, Billy Paul and Al Thurman - a small but determined football team
under the guidance of Coach Fred Schwartz, led the Edna High School
Football Team to victory in the Regional playoffs – the highest at the
time in the Fall of 1944. He is the last player from that team to
“leave the field.” His continued joy of the sport led him to become a
referee for local games in this area after his return from the military.
He attended TCU for
a short time, then was inducted into the Army of the United States at
Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was trained at the Engineer Training Center
at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and received Honorable Discharge on December
2, 1946, with World War II Victory Ribbon, Decorations and Citations,
and lapel button. He returned to his home in Edna, Jackson County,
Texas, and filed papers on December 21, 1946.
His vocational life
included work in the Strane family ranching business, the family Dr.
Pepper Bottling Business in Edna, and some training at Victoria College.
Always one to learn quickly and skilled at fixing anything, he continued
to add to his skills and prepared to marry in the summer of 1949.
He married Carroll
Joyce Watson on June 3, 1949, and continued to work in the family
businesses until family ownership in the Dr. Pepper business shifted, in
about 1957, and he began working in the oil and gas industry. He was
employed initially by Alcoa, then took a position with a pipeline
company which took him to Louisiana for about a year. He returned
Texas, and began working with the Neumin Production Gas Plant, again a
part of Alcoa. During that time, he was able to enjoy long vacations,
with travel, camping and sight-seeing all over the United States.
Teaching map skills, packing and planning skills to his daughters, and
teaching neighbors how to ride bicycles, repair vehicles. His inventions
took some time as well. He still made time to be, as one friend called
him, a good “sport!” The friends that shared that time are considered
family. He briefly retired from Alcoa in 1988, though was asked to
return to work with the new owner, Formosa. He continued his work in
the old and new parts of the gas plant until 1994, his “second”
retirement from the industry.
No longer tethered
by a work schedule, Bruce and Carroll were free to travel, to visit
their daughters and their families, take bus trips with friends and
enjoy the time. He remained busy with his habits of “routine
maintenance” and kept all things in shape and “humming” – at home and
often, at the homes of others. His willingness to be of service to
others was always present. His daily routines and focus on crossword
puzzles, word jumbles and games of solitaire kept him focused between
tasks or adventures.
As he aged, using
grace, humor, kindness and courtesy, he was often asked by a friend,
“How’re you doing Mr. Bruce?” His reply was consistent: “I’m hangin’
on tight!” And he maintained that response, while teaching us all an
important “last lesson” ~ how to live out our days with that same grace,
kindness, courtesy, and faith until it is time to let go of this side of
God’s plan for each of us, and to move on to the next part of God’s plan
~ the welcoming arms of Christ, our loving Saviour and Good Shepherd.
And Bruce humbly accepted.
The services are
under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home, Visitation will be on
Friday, January 24, 2020 from 5 – 7 pm in the Oaklawn Funeral Home
Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, January 25,
2020 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Edna, Main
Street at North Allen, under the guidance of The Reverend Kelli
Williamson.
Gifts in memoriam
may be sent to The First United Methodist Church of Edna, 216 W. Main
Street, Post Office Drawer 790, Edna, Texas 77957.
