Mr. Gus Schiewitz Died Tuesday Night

Mr. Gus C. Schiewitz, for 23 years manager of the Woodring-Meyer Lumber Company in this city, passed away at his home in Edna Tuesday night about 10:00 o’clock following a protracted illness.

The funeral service was held at the family home this morning at 10:30 and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. John H. Newton of the Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery.

Out of respect for the deceased, the business houses closed for the funeral.

Gus Schiewitz was born in Victoria May 23, 1896, and moved to Cuero with his parents when he was about two years of age. He was a graduate of the Cuero High School, and he was united in marriage to Miss Cleo Winslett, also a resident of DeWitt County. Mr. and Mrs. Schiewitz later moved to Yoakum, and from Yoakum they moved to Laredo where he was connected with a lumber yard. From Laredo they moved to Edna in 1925, and he became the manager of the Woodring-Meyer Lumber Company, which position he held until he became ill a few months ago. That means for twenty-three years he was a next door neighbor to the Herald force, and he was a good neighbor in every sense of the word, and throughout the years this neighborly tie was indeed a pleasant one.

He was a man of great energy and when duty called he worked early and late, giving his undivided loyalty to the business he conducted, and he knew that business as few men do. In his business dealings with his fellowmen he was fair, courteous and considerate, and over the years he made many warm and lasting friends, all of whom were deeply grieved at his passing.

Since they became Edna residents Mrs. Schiewitz has been a member of the Edna school faculty. Thus this couple has been close to the interests of this little city for over 23 years in business circles, in social circles and in educational circles. Mr. Schiewitz was an enterprising public-spirited citizen and never lagged nor shirked a duty when there was work to be done on projects that had for their purpose the improvement of his city and the people he loved so well.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Floyd Schiewitz, superintendent of the Floresville schools, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Floyd Schiewitz, and a granddaughter, Carol Schiewitz. To these sorrowing ones the Herald extends sympathy.

Rosemarie "Rose" Scott

Rosemarie "Rose" Scott, 86, of Houston, passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2018. Rose was born on Dec. 16, 1931, in Port Lavaca, to the late Henry and Lydia Olga (Schulle) Born, the sixth of nine children.

Growing up, Rose worked on her father’s farm. Her childhood home had no electricity or indoor plumbing. She graduated from Vanderbilt High School in Vanderbilt. Rose met her husband-to-be, Robert W. Scott (Bobby), who lived in Edna, during her high school years. He chanced to see her as he parked next to her father’s car in front of a grocery store in Edna. Bobby thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Ultimately, they married on Christmas Eve 1951, while he was on leave from the Army. After returning to civilian life they lived in Beaumont and South Louisiana, where Bobby worked for Gulf Oil, and then Houston, when he joined Gulf Publishing Co., ultimately becoming CEO.

Rose was a world traveler – along with her husband, she circled the globe seven times, visiting 23 foreign countries and 19 foreign capitals – some multiple times. Included were two Atlantic Ocean crossings on supersonic Concorde. Tongue in cheek, when asked about her favorite cities she’d visited, she would reply, “Hong Kong, Singapore and San Antonio.”

Rose was noted for her radiant smile and sweet disposition. She was a skilled cook and seamstress, avid card player, reader of mysteries, and crossword puzzle fan. She was a 60-year member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church where she sang like an angel in the choir. She loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a wonderful wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Bobby, son Robert, Jr. (Leedell), daughter Marilee (Larry Davis), grandchildren Dianne Friedl (Andrew), Melissa McElwee (Steve), Robert L. Ruth Vonderau Stephens

Ruth Vonderau Stephens, 84, of Conroe, TX, passed peacefully to her Heavenly home on Dec. 14, 2018.

Ruth had a love for the Lord and spent her lifetime in being the hands and feet of Jesus to those around her. She had fought a courageous battle with cancer over the past year and a half. Ruth inspired all who knew her through her witty sense of humor, her love of her family, her generous giving spirit, her musical talent and her love for God.

Born December 2, 1934, in the small town of Ganado, Texas, to Thomas Elijah Hubbard and Lillie Marie Boepple Hubbard, Ruth attended Ganado High School where she was a twirler and drum major. She developed her musical skills throughout high school and became an accomplished pianist, playing for the glory of God at several churches throughout her life.

Ruth married Edward Vonderau, the father of her three children, in April 1954. Ruth and Edward made their home in the Westbury area of Houston where she was a Charter member of Westbury Baptist Church. She shared her musical talent and love of the Lord by directing the children’s choirs at Westbury for many years. The Vonderaus moved to the Woodlands in 1978 and Ruth became a member of Fellowship of the Woodlands.

Ruth married Otha B. Stephens in June 1995 and they enjoyed traveling and spending time together until his passing. After retiring from the public schools in Houston ISD and Conroe ISD as the attendance clerk at McCullough High School, Ruth volunteered many years in her community. She served at Bridgewood farms in Conroe and most recently at Something Special, the Montgomery County women’s shelter resale shop.

The one accomplishment of which Ruth was most proud was her children. Mark Edward Vonderau and wife, D’Ann, of Beaumont, Brian Lee Vonderau, and wife, Sandra, of Montgomery, and Leah Gay Coale and husband, Louis, of the Woodlands are all blessed to call her Mom. She dedicated her life to encouraging and supporting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.     Ruth was a devoted mother to her children and a proud Mimi to Christopher Vonderau and wife, Candice, Amy Vonderau Rehorst and husband Kenneth, Nathan Vonderau and wife, Michelle, Kyle Vonderau, Kevin Vonderau, Holly Vonderau Carpenter and husband Tyler, Patrick Coale, Kayla Coale, and Anna Coale.

In the past few years, Ruth’s joy in being a grandmother was further expanded as she became a great-grandmother to Reese Vonderau, Callee Vonderau, Crayson Vonderau, Tate Carpenter, Jude Vonderau and Jack Rehorst. Ruth is also survived by her nephew Thomas Harper and wife, Johnnie, and great niece, Tisha Harper Krause. Step-grandchildren who were blessed to join “Mimi Ruth’s” family are: Kaitlin Laurent, Garrett Cathriner, Heather Valle, Gerry McGlone III, Matthew McGlone, Michael McGlone and step-great-grandchildren Cadence, little Gerry, Connor, Jessalynn, Isiah, Isaac, Christopher, Sam, Jameson, and baby Laurent.     In addition to her parents, the father of her children, Edward Vonderau, and her husband O.B. Stephens, Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Harper, her brother in law, J.W. Harper, and a daughter in law, Emily Vonderau.

The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the kind and loving care provided to our mom by the staff at Woodhaven Village and A-Med Hospice Care. Your ministry to all of us throughout the past few months is truly God’s love in action. We will “thank God upon every remembrance of you.” Philippians 1:3.

Mr. F. W. Strane Died Last Friday

In the death of Mr. Frank W. Strane at his home a few miles east of Morales Friday, November 26th, another citizen has been removed from the fast thinning ranks of the native Jackson pioneers. Mr. Strane had been in failing health for the past few years, and his passing was not a surprise.

The funeral was held at the Morales Baptist Church Saturday afternoon. Rev. Thomas Felts conducted the service. The remains were laid to rest in the Strane Cemetery, near Morales, besides those of his parents.

Francis Worley Strane was born December 15, 1863, near Morales, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jasper (Jap) Strane, early Jackson County settlers. With the exception of a few years spent in Edna, Mr. Strane lived his long life at or near the place of his birth. He was one of the best posted men of our section in matters of early Jackson County history. He possessed a remarkable memory for dates and events that stood out in the development and history of his native county and he enjoyed relating these events to the younger generation. Mr. Strane was a thrifty man, and as long as he lived, he friends and neighbors knew he would meet every financial obligation he made.

In February, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Stapleton of Fayette County. To this union eight children were born, six of whom survive.

The living children are: Mrs. Lessie Sanders, Ranger; Miss Mary Strane of Edna; Mr. Dewey Strane of Edna; and Mr. Schley Strane of Victoria; Mrs. Lucille Traylor of Austin and Mrs. Naomi McDonald of Falfurrias. Also surviving are two granddaughters and six grandsons.

The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy to the bereaved.
