Willie Robinson, 27, an Edna negro who was well known, especially to peace officers for his many infractions of the law, was killed Monday near West Columbia when a car he had stolen, turned over with him while he was trying to evade the officers. Willie, it is said, stole the car in Victoria and headed for Houston on the Hug-the-Coast Highway. As he drove into West Columbia at a high rate of speed, he was spotted by officers who gave chase. When Willie tried to round a curve while his car was making an estimated 80 miles an hour, the car turned over, killing the negro. Willie has had so many brushes with the law, it would be hard to enumerate them. However, he recently completed a federal sentence for breaking into the Edna depot and stealing several sacks of mail, which he took a mile or so down the track where he opened them and took several letters contain checks and money. He had also stolen a car or two in Edna. Edna Weekly Herald (Edna, Tex.), Vol. 39, No. 18, Ed. 1 Thursday, March 14, 1946, newspaper, March 14, 1946, page 1.

Mrs. C. O. Rogers, a resident of Jackson County since her early youth, passed away at her home in Ganado, Texas, July 17, 1947. Although she had been in failing health for the past few years her death came as a shock to her loved ones and friends. On the morning of her passing, Mrs. Rogers went about her household duties as usual when the summons of death came. This was as she had often expressed the desire to go when her life’s work was ended. She often spoke of her departure as though going on a journey. Ida Babcock was born in Victoria, Texas, August 17, 1869, moving to Jackson County when she was a small child. She was united in marriage to Mr. C. O. Rogers, a member of a prominent and pioneer family of Jackson County on May 22, 1887. To this union were born four children. She united with the Methodist Church in early life, to which she remained a loyal member. Mrs. Rogers possessed a jovial disposition, and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. Always the perfect hostess of the true southern hospitality, she could relate many interesting stories of the early life of our community. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, July 18th, at 4:30 p. m., with Rev. Don Westbrook conducting the ceremony. The large number of relatives and friends attending, and the beautiful floral offering bespoke the love and esteem in which she was held. Interment was made at the Ganado Cemetery with the Wheeler Funeral Home of El Campo as director. Pallbearers were: Messrs. Emil Egg, Joe Heard, Hugh McCulloch, Mike, Albert and Jim Strauss. Those beside her husband, left to mourn her passing are two sons, Montie and Owen; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Lancaster and Mrs. Beatrice Spencer; one sister, Mrs. Grace Raleigh, all of Ganado. Seven grandchildren, two great grand children, relatives, and a host of friends. The out-of-town relatives attending the funeral of Mrs. C. O. Rogers were: Dr. and Mrs. L. R. Lancaster and daughter, Sour Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Ben T. Kliber, Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. Lyn Mantooth, Mrs. W. L. Kindle, Kingsville; Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Rogers, Jr., and son, Corpus Christi; Mr. and Mrs. Mack Rogers, Mr. Witt Rogers, Mrs. Nettie Rogers, and Mrs. Parvin Spencer, San Antonio; Mrs. Minnie Sutherland, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Ganado—Mrs. Maude Rogers of Ganado, justice of peace of Precinct 2 in Jackson County since 1949, died at 9:15 Tuesday night in the Mauritz Memorial – Jackson County Hospital as a result of injuries received Sunday afternoon in a highway accident near Ganado. Tentative funeral services were announced for 3 p. m. Thursday at the First Christian Church here with Woodrow Yates officiating. Interment was to be in the Ganado Cemetery. Mrs. Rogers suffered a severe cut under the chin causing loss of a great deal of blood, a head injury several broken ribs and other injuries in the accident. She was riding in the car with Mrs. Mike Strauss, who is hospitalized with severe bruises. Three cars were involved in the accident, which occurred about 5:45 p. m. Sunday some five miles south of Ganado on Highway 172. Highway Patrolman Ray Anderson is still investigating the wreck. Anderson said apparently the Strauss vehicle ran into the rear of a 1955 Mercury driven by Edwin Giese of Ganado as Giese slowed to pull off the highway and stop to talk with his son, James Giese, who was parked off the highway in the third car. The patrolman said the Straus car then apparently swung around and hit the parked car. Mr. Giese and James were not injured. He estimated Mrs. Strauss’ 1956 Mercury and that of Mr. Giese were damaged around $350 each, while the youth’s car was damaged an estimated $75. Ganado friends paid tribute to Mrs. Rogers as a “kind, Christian person, and loyal worker in the Church of Christ here.” County officials expressed sympathy to her family, and paid tribute to Mrs. Rogers as a “loyal and efficient public official.” Maude Bloomingkemper was married to Montie Rogers on Dec. 24, 1917 and spent her entire married life in Ganado. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1949, while he was justice of the peace, and at that time was appointed justice of peace to finish out his unexpired term. And she had been re-elected every election since that year. She is survived by three daughters: Wanda Suden of Las Vegas, Nevada; Marguerite Hallet of San Antonio and Orva Retha Ashford of Dickinson, and two granddaughters; a brother, Ray Bloomingkemper of Kaufman; her step-mother, Mrs. Effie Bloomingkemper and stepsister, Mrs. Verne Hammons, both of Hutchinson, Kansas.
