Born on June 22, 1985, weighing only 1lb 7oz, she proved to be a fighter from her very first days on earth. The daughter of Kenneth McLendon and Jay Lynn Hines, spent 4 and a half months in the NICU before finally coming home in October of 1985, weighing a whopping 4lbs 15oz. She was a 2004 graduate of Calhoun High School. Laura was the middle child, younger to sister Lindsey and older to brother Cameron. She loved her siblings to her core. Laura’s dreams came true the day she married the love of her life, Chance Odell, on February 6, 2021. It is evident from all who were present and in the pictures that this was by far, the best day of her life. To know Laura, is to love Laura. For many years, she was a CNA to hospice patients where her hearts light shined the brightest. She was as compassionate as they come and genuinely cared for her patients and their families. Her beautiful smile would light up the souls of all around her. Laura loved her family, fur babies Miley, Milo and Scarlett as well as many, many friends. She loved to travel, especially for family trips and back to Houston for the rodeo. While the hand life dealt her with metastatic breast cancer was more difficult than anyone could imagine, Laura persevered. She taught those in her life what the word fighter means and that it is important to cherish every single moment we have. She endured tough days with a smile on her face- she was a force to be reckoned with! Even on her difficult days, she was more concerned with taking care of her loved ones than she was about herself. In her final moments, she was still ensuring those around her were ok. If you were blessed to have met Laura, it meant a lifetime friendship. Laura wanted nothing more than for her loved ones to live a life filled with love and joy. She is preceded in death by her sister Lindsey McLendon, grandparents Jay Norris and Dorothy Norris, and Nila Plagens and her Stepfather Kerry Hines. Laura is survived by her loving husband, Chance Odell; mother, Jay Lynn Hines, father, Kenneth McLendon; brother, Cameron McLendon; Mother-in-Law Shirley Odell and Father-in-Law Harry Odell; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her one wish would be that we live life as she did - never giving up and showing everyone we come in contact with kindness. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM –7: 00 PM on Friday, June 21, 2024, at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna, TX (900 Navidad St). Services will begin at 10:00am on Saturday, June 22, 2024, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel (900 Navidad Edna, Tx) followed by Graveside service at Memory Gardens of Edna Cemetery (204 Buffalo St Edna, Tx). Irene was born January 17, 1920 in Ratcliff, Texas to Steven Joseph Zielonka and Madeline Agnes Hahn and died March 10, 2018 in Denton, Texas. She was the third of 11 children born. She attended Ratcliff school and Cuero High School. She was removed from school by her father to take care of his ailing parents during her senior year. She fulfilled her lifelong dream of finishing high school by completing her GED in her early fifties. While working in Bay City, Texas Irene met her future husband, Joseph Anthony Orsak, at a wedding where Joe was a member of the choir. They were married in Bay City on February 24, 1941. Throughout their marriage of 45 years, Irene followed Joe as he pursued his career as a Master Electrician. As she supported Joe in his career, Irene raised five children while at the same time working jobs in retail sales. Some of her more interesting jobs were being a hand model for hosiery for JC Penny in the 40’s and working in a custom boot store in Yoakum, Texas and having to tell Clint Eastman he couldn’t buy a pair of boots unless he paid cash for them, which he did not have. Irene was an avid reader all her life, especially biographies. Irene loved being active all of her life, playing baseball with the boys, playing tennis with her husband, walking throughout her life and especially dancing whenever and where ever she was given the opportunity. Irene excelled at cooking throughout her life, was an avid gardener and canner. She had gardens where ever she lived and cooked meals for her elderly neighbors in both Bay City and Goliad, Texas. Irene participated in the Altar Society and the PTA, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters throughout her children’s schooling. Irene also participated in a supper club where members prepared meals for each other. In 1999 Irene moved to Denton, Texas to reside in her own apartment behind the residence of her daughter Karen Jackson and son-in-law Reed Jackson. No matter where Irene lived, she will be remembered for her sense of humor and her ability to make lasting friendships. I don’t believe that she ever met anyone who did not admire her for her accomplishments. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, her son Jeffrey, her daughter Sophia Alicia, her brothers Alvin, Edward, Joe, Emil and Jack and her sisters Emelia, Ella, Corinne, and Dolores. Irene is survived by her sister Mary Jo, her sons Steven Orsak (Betty) and Gary Orsak (Denise). her daughter Dr. Karen A. Jackson ( Reed), 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. A special thanks to the incredible caregivers in Denton, Medical City Denton Hospital and Denton Rehabilitation Center. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, March 15 at 11 am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Bonnie Brae street in Denton. An additional memorial service will be held in Cuero, Texas at the St. Michaels Catholic Church on March 23rd or March 24th. Online condolences may be made at www.mulkey-bowlesmontomgery.com

Baass said an autopsy performed Friday morning showed there was “no apparent indication of violence.” Baas said he will stick with the ruling unless evidence showing otherwise appears in the continuing police probe. Police said Ortiz apparently drowned in the vicinity of the Glass-Second intersection where a “splash” sound was heard by nearby residents that night. They said marks on an embankment where a trail leads to the river indicated a person had slipped and fallen into the water. Investigators theorized that the reason that the body was clad in only trousers and socks was that Ortiz was wearing shoes of the type that would fall off easy and that the shirt he was wearing was apparently torn away by tree limbs in the river. Detective Layne Schmidt said a person appearing to be Ortiz was last seen parking his car in the 900 block of South Main Street at about 10:30 p. m. on Dec. 5 and that he was then seen running from the vehicle across the yard of the residence. The officer said the occupants of a residence in the 1400 block of Sycamore Street were the last persons to have definitely seen him alive a short time before the car was parked at the Main Street location. Ortiz’ body was found tangled in floating brush near a bend in the river approximately 100 yards upstream from Peachtree Street. It was originally seen two hours earlier by two fishermen just off Wharf Street behind the CP&L Plant. Ortiz, son of Mrs. Guadalupe Ortiz of La Salle, had been living with his aunt, Mrs. Janie Barrios of 3802 N. Main St. He was employed by Safety Steel Corp. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday at St. Theresa Catholic Church at La Salle with the Rev. Wallis Stiles and the Rev. Richard Toal officiating at a concelebrated mass. Burial will be in Edna Latin American Cemetery under the direction of Artero Memorial Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7:45 p. m. They’re All Gone Edna—Johnny Hernandez Jr. saved the members of his family that he could. The only way he knew how. He threw his girlfriend, Annabel Ortiz and their 4-year-old son, Johnny Hernandez III, out of the window of their burning mobile home. It was just after 5 a. m. Tuesday on a quiet block of Rowlett Street. Both he and his neighbors called 911, but it was too late. Five other children died inside the home. They were Noah Ortiz, 15, Nicholas Ortiz, 13, Julian Ortiz, 11, Lilyana Hernandez, 6, and Areyanah Hernandez, 5. Both Edna Fire Marshal Lloyd “Buster” Chase and the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating. Johnny Hernandez’s brother, Rico Hernandez, speculated the fire might have been caused by a problem with the old mobile home’s electrical wiring or heater. The predawn blaze roused neighbors, who watched in horror as about 20 firefighters from Edna and Ganado fire departments struggled to battle a fire that officials think reached between 700 and 1,000 degrees. Between four and six firefighters went inside, crawling on their hands and knees. Smoke clouded their vision as they searched the mobile home but came up empty. As minutes that felt like hours ticked by and the floor, walls and ceiling melted, the firefighters made the agonizing decision to pull back. “It was too dangerous of a situation and, at that point in time, if anybody was in the structure, it wouldn’t be a rescue mission,” Capt. Nick Strauss said. Hours after the flames had been extinguished, family and friends gathered at the corner of Rowlett and Ward streets overcome with grief. Some questioned if the outcome would have been different if they had been allowed to pick up the axes and hoses the firefighters had to lay down. “Even my dad, he’s 78 years old, wanted to go in,” said Diane Hernandez, Annabel Ortiz’s aunt. “He said, ‘I’ve lived my life. Let me save my babies.” As the children’s bodies were taken to the Travis County medical examiner, she tried not to think about their final moments, but about happier times. “I’m greedy, but I want them back so bad,” she said dissolving into sobs. She last saw them Sunday when they helped pick a lemon tree in her backyard. They looked forward to Sunday because she would pick up breakfast for them. “They would tell me, ‘Tia, when is it doughnut day?’” Noah was supposed to get his letterman jacket Tuesday. He played varsity football for Edna High School. His goal was to play for the Texas A&M Aggies. “He said, ‘You know, Tia, I’m going to make it up there. I’m going to be somebody,’” Diane Hernandez said. The children’s grandfather, David Rubio, recalled playing football with Noah. “One time, we played in the backyard and he tackled me. I said, ‘Hey what’s wrong with you? You’re going to break me in half,’” Rubio said. The girls liked playing dress-up. Their brothers were protective. They would not have left the house—even if it was on fire—without them, family members said. The children’s stepmother, Rosemary Ortiz, leaned again a car at the scene, her phone ringing with friends offering condolences. She had just delivered the bad news to David, the father of Noah, Nicholas and Julian. He was working in the oil field and had planned to return Thursday to Edna to go Black Friday shopping. He already had his sons’ Christmas lists, but wanted to take them along to ensure he picked out the perfect gift. “There boys were his world. He’s going crazy right now,” she said. “I’m trying to be controlled because when he gets here, he’s going to need me.” Eventually, the Rev. Andrew Schroer with the Redeemer Lutheran Church persuaded the family that standing around would not bring the children back. He corralled them back to the St. Agnes Catholic Church’s parish hall, which had tables of soda and anything from chicken to doughnuts to pizza for the mourners. For hours, they paces, hugged and cried. “They’re gone. They’re all gone,” the children’s grandmother, Belinda Garcia, wailed. When Johnny Hernandez III, also known as 3J, arrived at the hall from the hospital, though, family members couldn’t keep their hands off him. Wearing pajamas and a sleeping expression, he was passed from one person to another. They cradled and rocked him. Annabel Ortiz, 32, a stay-at-home mom, was scheduled to go into surgery a second time. She was treated for cuts and a broken arm at Citizens Medical Center and lost the use of one of her hands, family member Christina Robles said. Johnny Hernandez Jr., 30, who works at Inteplast in nearby Lolita, was treated for burns to his face and neck at the Jackson County hospital. There he asked desperately about his cell phone. His brother, Rico, said the father had taken photos Monday night of the children and wanted those memories preserved. He was grateful when Gracie Mendoza, a Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy and friend of the family, found the cell phone in the grass outside, his brother said. “He was trying to get them out, but there was only so much he could do,’ Rico Hernandez said. “We’re taking it really heard. It’s probably one of the biggest tragedies in Edna, in all around.”
