Richardson, pastor, and the Rev. Byron Gaskin, eulogist. Burial will follow at Markham Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. She was born in Vanderbilt, Texas, March 3, 1949, to Jake Edwards and Clara Allen Edwards, and passed away February 17, 2008, in Bay City, Texas. Survivors include: one daughter, Cassandra Clark; and one son, Patrick Clark; both of Victoria; three sisters, Alice Jackson of Bay City, Carolyn Orr of Vanderbilt, and Sharron Lockett of Cuero; and six brothers, Elbert Hopes, John Hopes and Rodney Hopes, all of Edna, Douglas Hopes of Victoria, Rickie Hopes of Bay City, and Vonnell Hopes of Corpus Christi. Also: two grandchildren, Stormy and Dre’Shawn, and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Arrangements are with Duncan-Roberts Funeral Home, Bay City, Texas, 979-245-5197. Bay City Tribune, February 20, 2008 Theresa Ann Edwards Clark-McGrew Theresa “Pat” Ann Edwards Clark-McGrew, the daughter of Clara Allen Hopes of Vanderbilt, Texas and Jake Edwards of Houston, Texas, was born in Vanderbilt at her great-grandparents’ (Ellen and Cleveland Hosey) home on March 3, 1949. She was the first of twelve children born to Clara Hopes. Theresa was raised by her grandparents, Ollie and Willie Jones, of whom she fondly knew as “Mama Ollie” and Daddy Willie.” Ollie and Willie had no children together, so they doted on Pat. She grew up in the community of her birth and attended George Washington Carver School in Edna, Texas, until the tenth grade. At that time, the area schools integrated so she transferred to Industrial High School in Vanderbilt. Because of her desire to graduate with her former classmates, she returned to Edna in her senior year and graduated from Edna High School in May of 1967. Theresa met George Edward Clark, Jr. and married him on June 19, 1968. Their first child, Cassandra Denise, was born. At the age of thirty-six years old, she gave birth to her second child, Patrick Casey George. She and George divorced two years later. They attempted reconciliation; however, it ended with George’s death. Theresa remained single for the next fifteen years. During that time she did a great deal of soul searching which led her to attend college. She graduated from Wharton Junior College in Wharton, Texas and earned an Associate Degree in Psychology. She continued her education at the University of Houston-Victoria in Victoria, Texas. She graduated on December 16, 1993, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She also attended another year in pursuit of a Master’s Degree. While in college, Theresa met Gail Spell, who later became her mentor. Gail told her about a wonderful job working with infants with birth defects and developmental delays. In June of 1994, Theresa was hired by Sandra Collins, Director of Project GROW as an Early Childhood Interventionist (ECI) for Matagorda County. She felt this was her calling in life. She loved working with the families of the children in the program in the Matagorda area. Before long, she began referring to the children as “her babies.” The children and their parents were embedded in Theresa’s heart so much so, that even after the children left the ECI program, she held parties to keep in touch with the families. In September of 1999, Theresa left the ECI program and began to work for Texana MHMR. She was employed as a service coordinator to assist mentally retarded clients. Theresa found that she loved working with mentally retarded adults as much as she loved “her babies.” This job was very rewarding to her and she made many friends. She poured her heart and soul into this job, often arriving early and leaving late. After the death of her second husband, she resigned in August of 2003, due to her illness and the relocation of the position to Richmond, Texas. During the time Theresa attended the University of Houston-Victoria, she became very lonely so she prayed a prayer of faith. Theresa asked God to send her someone that would love Him first and love her children. She did not tell God that the man had to be rich or handsome. She knew if he loved God, the rest would fall into place. She also told God that He would have to send this man to her home. He did just that. In 1991, Leo “Jack” McGrew, came to her home and asked if he could come courting. Theresa had met her true love, the love of her life, her gift from God and her soul-mate. Jack and Theresa were married November 19, 1994. He gave Theresa her “Dream Wedding.” Their marriage lasted almost ten glorious years. On July 3, 2003, Jack went on his journey of a lifetime to heaven; however, he left a ticket in her name to meet him at a later time. Theresa was preceded in death by her second husband, Leo “Jack” Clinton McGrew; first husband, George Edward Clark, Jr.; mother, Clara Allen Hopes; stepfather, Elbert Hopes, Sr.; father, Jake Edwards; grandmother, Ollie Jones; grandfather, Willie Jones; great grandparents, Ellen and Cleveland Hosey; two brothers, Donnell Hopes and Jerry Hopes and sister-in-law, Evelyn Hopes. Her transition from life came Sunday, February 17, 2008, in Markham, Texas, at the age of fifty-eight. She leaves precious memories to her family members who include her loving daughter and son, Cassandra Denise and Patrick Casey George; two grandchildren, Stormy Setara and Dra’Shaun Trevaille (all of Victoria); six brothers, James Elbert Hopes, John Willie Hopes and Rodney Andre (Petula) Hopes of Edna, Donnell Hopes of Corpus Christi, Rickey (Janice) Hopes of Bay City and Douglas Hopes of Victoria; three sisters, Carolyn (Walter) Orr of Van Alstine, Alice Marie Jackson of Bay City and Sharron (Burt) Lockett of Cuero; three godchildren, Larry Donnell Johnson of Markham, Angela Denise Fields of Bay City and Willie Earl Woodberry of Odessa; and Angela Fields of Bay City; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. As a youth, Theresa joined the Methodist Church in Edna. In 1968, she married, moved to Bay City and joined Tyree Chapel AME Church. She remained a member until she met a hairdresser named Tenola Law. “Mother Law” told her about being saved and filled with the Holy Ghost. Theresa tarried and received the Holy Ghost in the old Hilliard gymnasium in a revival with Evangelist Norwood. She then joined Bible Days Revival Church in Bay City under Mother Tenola Law’s leadership. Theresa was appointed Pastor’s Aide president and Youth Department Director and taught Children’s Sunday School. Theresa later moved her membership to Zion Tabernacle Christian Church in Victoria where she was one of the church’s faithful and devoted members. She proved to be a good worker and follower, Theresa was a member of the Pastor’s Aide and the Youth Department Activity Director. It was during this time that she and her sister, Alice Jackson, created the Two Soulful Sisters as an endeavor to raise funds to help remodel the church and assist the pastor with his needs. Theresa returned to her roots and followed her heart back to Bible Days Revival Church under the leadership of Pastor Byron Gaskin. Her last days at her “home” were spent working with the youth of the church. Theresa’s last words to the words are “If I could sum up my life, I would want people to know that I loved God with all my heart and soul, that I walked by faith and not by sight, and I truly had a genuine love for people. May she rest in peace with her One True Love, Jesus. AMEN

Helen Smiles McKey, 99, of El Toro, Texas, passed on to her rest and reward on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at home with loved ones by her side. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Ira and Pearl Jones. As the oldest of six children, she learned hard work and resposibility working on a farm. These lessons stuck with her; one of her favorite sayings was, "Where there's a will, there's a way." After graduating from La Ward High School, she was accepted into the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps at Methodist Hospital in Houston, where she earned her R.N. Helen married John McKey on August 31, 1944, in Houston, while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy. When he had to report back to duty, she traveled alone on a train bound for Seattle - without a job or place to stay yet settled - so that the two could be together whenever John came into port. She had the will, and she found a way. This kind of love and devotion to one another was characteristic of the 63 years they had together. After John was discharged in 1946, the couple made their home in Yucca Heights, near Victoria, and later moved to Telferner, where they lived for 17 years and raised their four children. In May of 1964, Helen was named Public Health Nurse of Jackson County, leading the family to move to El Toro, Texas, where she remained for the rest of her life. In recognition of her work, she received the Yellow Rose of Texas award from Governor Mark White. After 21 years of diligent service, Helen retired from nursing. She stayed busy, though, learning to play the tenor guitar so she could join John in performing bluegrass music throughout the area; they were a celebrated staple at several nursing homes. Her new-found free time was also given over to family and friends, who she deeply loved. She and John hosted many domino parties, enjoying numerous games of 42. She enjoyed cooking for others, gardening, and working in her flower beds. Her five grandchildren loved to stay at her house. She later delighted in her six great-grandchildren. Helen was also a longtime member of the Robinson Street church of Christ in Edna. She loved singing church songs and sharing her love of the Lord with her spiritual family. She was known for her kindness, wisdom, and encouragement to others. With a middle name like "Smiles," perhaps it isn't surprising that she was so good at bringing a smile to those she was around. It was certainly what she willed, and we have all been blessed by her determination to find a way. Doris Ellen McNabb, born some almost 91 years ago, passed peacefully from this present world on Monday, November 13, 2023. She was cared for, prayed for and loved most by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren until her final breath. Doris was born January 25, 1933 in the rural community of LaSalle, TX to Henry and Wilma Gerik Kolar. She was one of five children born into the Kolar family. From an early age, Doris was taught the endless ways of homemaking and baking along side her mother. Her family was most thankful for these skills as it produced countless pans of cakes and kolaches, many new handmade clothes and a spotless home for her family. Doris learned to garden from both her parents, of which she delighted in her entire life. She could grow anything with just a pile of dirt. Doris graduated from Vanderbilt High School in 1949, and the following year in 1950, earned an Executive Secretarial Diploma from Durham's Business School in San Antonio. She worked for some 30 years as the most friendly and stylish Bank Secretary & Cashier for numerous Banks in Beeville, TX. She enjoyed her customers and took pride in her work thru those years. As a matter of fact, she loved banking so much, she worked and then retired not once, but three times! Her family believes that she loved the retirement parties. One of many great gifts and blessings to her, was her devoted husband, Andrew "A.E." McNabb. They were married on August 16, 1951 while A.E. served in the US Air Force. While they both worked at building and sustaining a happy marriage, they adored one another beyond measure. This love was on full display to anyone who knew them each day of their lives. Doris and A.E. never missed an opportunity to hook onto their many travel trailers they owned and head to "Shellbank" at LaSalle. This was their home away from home. Sunsets at Shellbank were what they worked so hard for and lived for most in their later years. They caught fish together until Heaven called A.E. home in 2011. "They'll never be another "Mac" (as she called him) and I certainly don't want to train another one" she would say. Doris and A.E. adored their four children, Donald, Janice, Terry and Michael immensely. They spent every ounce of energy teaching and displaying what hard work, strong morals and a respectable character looked like. For almost 60 years they were examples of what sweet love, commitment and forgiveness can produce. Doris once said, "If I had it to do all over again, I'd do it the same way all over again. I had the best, with the best, and I am Blessed." Her family are those who were truly blessed by mom, grandma, sister and aunt." Doris has been preceded in death by her husband, Andrew "A.E." McNabb, son Terry McNabb; parents Henry & Wilma Kolar; brother Clarence Kolar; sister-in-law LaDelle Kolar; and sister-in-law Leona Kolar. Survivors include children Donald McNabb (Kathy) of LaSalle; daughter Janice Ellis (Charles) of Sinton; Michael McNabb (Carin) of Beeville. Grandchildren: Amanda Toon (Nathan); Deven Bowerman (Tom); Dustin Ellis (Megan); Adam McNabb (Stacie). Great Grandchildren: CD Ellis, LoReece Ellis, Madelyn McNabb, Landon McNabb, Andrew McNabb, Tyler Toon (Anna), Ashtyn Reddin (Gavin) and Austin Toon (Trista Hughes). Siblings: Raymond Kolar (Hope), Larry Kolar and Sylvia Gentry (Bill). Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and "adopted children she loved as if her own." Doris lived each day as a gift from God to love her family and those she called friend. She was far from perfect, but she was perfect for us. "True love, is that which can give the most without asking or demanding anything in return." She lived this out best! In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Donor's Choice. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Theresa Catholic Church in LaSalle, Rosary will be recited at 10:30 am, followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 am with Father Johnson Owusu-Boateng officiating. There will be a private family burial of ashes at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery at a later date. Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen Street, Edna, Texas 77957, 361-782-2152.
