Lyda Elizabeth Roome Martin

September 11, 1931 ~ February 7, 2024

Beth at 92 years old completed her journey through life on February 7, 2024, at 4:20 a.m. She is now with Our Lord & Savior. She was born on September 11, 1931, to the late Harold Wade & Lyda Pearl (Raybon) Roome. In her early adulthood she trained to be a nurse at the Mauritz hospital which was the first hospital in Jackson County located in Ganado, Tx.  There she met her husband James Mitchell (Red) Martin while her and his friends hung out around the town Post Office.  They fell in love shortly after their first date on September 11, 1950, and were married on October 31, 1950.   Their love was a whirlwind romance. They shared the same interests.  When they were quiet, their minds were still thinking about the same things.  Out of this Union of Love they were Blessed with 2 sons, James Harold and Ronald Mitchell Martin.  These two lovebirds enjoyed each other’s company in everything they did together. After 30 years of marriage together, James (Red) passed away due to cancer in 1981.  Several years later after the death of her husband Beth lost her first-born son, James Harold.

Beth and her son Ronnie enjoyed many years traveling to various states and seeing performances in Nashville, Tennessee, Grand Ole Opry, shows in Branson, Missouri several times over in course of a few years.  Beth loved to travel with her son Ronnie, they were great traveling buddies. She loved her little chihuahua, Mendy.  Mendy went everywhere with Mom, eating out at restaurants, shopping, visiting people, where Mom was Mendy was right there beside her.  Mendy was her favorite companion. Mendy even acted like an electric blanket when Mom laid on the couch. Mendy and Mom were inseparable.

Beth had a saying to which she repeated, “you can call me a tomboy but don’t ever call me a sissy”, those were fighting words.  Mom made the best German Chocolate cake from scratch; Ronnie will surely miss that.  Beth may have been of small stature, but she was a strong and fierce woman of Our Lord & Savior.

Beth is survived by her youngest son, Ronald (Ronnie) Mitchell Martin, Mendy, her favorite companion, Walter “Sandy” (Pamela Kay) Raybon, she loved these two like they were her own children.

A Special Thank You to Walter “Sandy” (Pamela Kay) Raybon, for always being there.  They loved Mom as much as she loved them.

Nellie Mauritz

Miss Nellie Mauritz of Austin, Texas, fell asleep in the Lord on January 21, 1946, after a lingering illness.  Funeral service was held at her church, Gethsemane Lutheran, with her pastor, J.E. Chester, officiating, after which she was brought to Ganado, Texas, and laid to rest beside her parents, on Saturday afternoon, January 26.

She was born at Ceresco, Nebraska, on April 21, 1889, and arrived in Texas at the age of four with the family.  She attended public school in Ganado, and in 1909, with her parents, moved to Hutto, Texas, and then attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.  With her sister, Miss Jennie, she has made her home in Austin for the past fifteen years.  In the family of eight children, one had died in infancy, and of the seven remaining who have made an honored place for themselves in the civic and church life of Texas, Nellie was the first to be taken from the circle.

She leaves to keep her in loving memory, brothers T.N. Mauritz and Senator Fred Mauritz of Ganado, brother Harry Mauritz of Edna, and sisters, Mrs. C.F. Combs of Cuero, Mrs. Walter Swenson of Ganado, with their families, and sister, Jennie Mauritz of Austin.

Nellie was one of those gentle, unassuming, faithful Christian women that endeared herself to everyone who comes to know them.  She leaves her loved ones a sweet memory.

Sandra Joy (Love) Meador

April 1, 1955 ~ May 19, 2023

In Loving Memory of Sandra Joy Meador

Sandra Joy Love Meador (better known as Sandy), a remarkable woman whose infectious smile and warm heart touched the lives of many, passed away on May 19, 2023 at the age of 68.  Born  on April 1, 1955, Sandy was a beloved wife, devoted mother, adored sister/sister-in-law, cherished grandmother, respectfully called "Aunt Sandy" by many (both relative and non relative), and dear friend to all had the privilege of knowing her.

Sandy married her soulmate, Garland Page Meador, on May 23, 1975.  Garland lost his earthly battle with cancer on December 20, 2001.  They are now joyfully reunited in Heaven after two decades apart.  Their love story is a source of inspiration and a reminder of the everlasting strength of Christ-centered love.  In addition to her husband, Sandy was also preceded in death by her father, James R. Love, Mother, Joyce Hamlin, and brothers, Jimmy Love, Bobby Love, and Larry Love.

In her early years, Sandy dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mom and member of Redeemer Lutheran Church helping with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  While her kids were still young, she joined Industrial School District.  There, Sandy was a beloved friend, revered by many for her genuine kindness.  Sandy had a special ability to make everyone feel valued and appreciated, and her friendship was a true gift.  While she never met a stranger, most of her favorite memories were with family and close friends be it in the backyard at Koop Loop, at Magnolia Beach (or "Love Beach" as it was affectionately nicknamed), or at sports events at Industrial greeting fellow Cobras with her contagious smile and laugh.  She held a deep affection for all the individuals and connections she cultivated during her time with Industrial, treasuring those friendships with great fondness.  Sandy spent 28 years with Industrial before retiring to Port O'Connor in the summer of 2020.

One of Sandy's most admirable qualities was her selflessness.  She dedicated her life to her family, pouring her heart and soul into being an amazing mother and a pillar of support for her loved ones.  Her love knew no bounds, and her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews are truly blessed to have her as an inspiration.  Sandy's laughter had the power to brighten even the darkest of days, and she had an innate ability to light up a room and was always the life of every celebration.  She had an unwavering love for the beach, sunshine, and the feeling of sand between her toes, finding joy in the tranquil beauty of the shoreline - a love she shared often with her family.  Sandy, who found immense delight in sunbathing, has now found eternal warmth in the heavenly rays in which she took pleasure.

Left to honor Sandy's memory are her loving children and their spouses, Lindsey Meador-Diegel (Martin Diegel), Joy Girndt (Craig Girndt), LeAnne Huber (Brandon Huber),  and Page Meador, as well as her adoring grandchildren Adeline Kennedy and Liam James Huber.  One of Sandy's greatest joys in life was being a grandmother, or as she was lovingly known, "YaYa".  She is also survived by her dear brothers Ricky Love (Patty) and Ronnie Tipton, brother-in-law Van Meador, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews all of whom she adored.  Sandy held a special place in her heart for her beloved brothers, their significant others, and all her nieces and nephews, savoring the bond they shared and the wonderful memories they made throughout their lives.

A service to honor and celebrate Sandy's beautiful life will be held on Friday, June 9th, at 10AM, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Edna, TX.  Pastor Andy Schroer will officiate the service.  Visitation with the family will take place at Redeemer one hour prior (at 9AM).  Following the service, Sandy will be laid to rest at Red Bluff Cemetery, with her late husband, a request those close to her knew well.  A catered meal will be provided back at the church allowing time for friends and family to share memories and support one another over videos, pictures, and conversation.

To honor Sandy's vibrant spirit, the family will be wearing something colorful at the service.  They would be delighted if others choose to do the same.  Coral or orange was Sandy's favorite color, and it would bring her pure joy to see the church filled with the vibrant hues she loved so dearly.

Sandra Joy Meador touched the lives of many with her love, compassion, and joyful spirit.  She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.  Her soul has found eternal peace in Heaven with her Savior and in the loving embrace of her husband.  May her memory live on in the heart of all those who were blessed to know and love her.

As her children, we aspire to emulate our beautiful Mother.

Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St. Edna, Texas 77957, 361-782-2152.

Mary Fromme Mitchell
Mrs. I. N. Mitchell, Sr. Died Saturday

Mrs. Isaac Newton Mitchell, Sr., a long time and prominent Jackson County resident, died Saturday, February 5th, at 5:00 p. m. in Lolita at the home of her son, Hugh.

Few, outside of the family circle, knew of Mrs. Mitchell’s illness, and the news of her death cast a gloom over this entire section, but more especially in the lower part of the county where she had so long resided and where she enjoyed a wide circle of friends.

Father David Buckley, pastor of St. Agnes Catholic Church of this city said Rosary for Mrs. Mitchell at the Slavik Funeral Home Sunday night at 9:00 o’clock. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:00 o’clock at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Officiating were Monsignor Beck of Victoria, Father Tom Tierney of Texas University, and Father David M. Buckley. Interment was made in the Catholic Cemetery at Victoria.

Active pallbearers were Messrs. Willie Oster of Victoria, Ben Fromme of Austin, Craig Dickey of San Antonio, Carlos Bonnot of LaWard, Claudius Branch and Dr. W. M. Jones of Edna.

Honorary pallbearers were: Dr. John C. Cottrell of Houston, Messrs. Jim Pickering, Robert Bauer and Frank Guittard of Victoria, W. L. Traylor, Carrol Traylor and Milam Simons of Carancahua Bay section; W. W. Bowe, R. W. McClung and Fred Westhoff of Edna and Martin O’Connor of Victoria.

Arriving Thursday for a visit with her son, Hugh, and family, Mrs. Mitchell became ill with heart trouble Friday morning. She had suffered several heart attacks previously. She was 73 years of age at the time of her death.

Born in Cuero in 1876 Mrs. Mitchell’s maiden name was Mary Fromme. Her parents were Rudolph Fromme and Mary Pearce Fromme, prominent pioneer residents of DeWitt County. Her father was a native of Hanover, Germany.

In 1894, she was married to Mr. Isaac Newton Mitchell, a member of one of Jackson County’s old and best known families. Mr. Mitchell passed away in 1936.

Their first home was located on Carancahua Bay. Here life was somewhat like that of the early pioneers in other sections. Hard work and competent managements of the home were necessary.

Three children were born to this union; Isaac Newton, Jr., Hugh and Alfred. The latter died in 1939. Newton and Hugh live on their ranches at Lolita.

When the boys were growing up, their parents established a home in Cuero, where Mrs. Mitchell could be with the boys and keep them in school. They still maintained the bay home, and later built a modern and ornate home at Lolita.

In 1940, Mrs. Mitchell built a home in Lometa, near Lampasas, and lived there until 1948 when she sold her home. Her home at the time of her death was a new house in Smithson Valley, about 18 miles from New Braunfels.

Mrs. Mitchell joined the Catholic Church after her marriage. As a successful housewife and business woman, she had little time for clubs and organizations.

In addition to her two sons, she is survived by three grandchildren: Mrs. Craig Dickey of San Antonio, and Newton Mitchell, Jr. and Michael Mitchell, both of Lolita; 3 great-grandchildren, Ruth, Craig and Susan Dickey of San Antonio; a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner of Austin, and a brother, Mr. Ed Fromme, who lives near Austin. The Herald joins the other friends of the bereaved ones in extending heartfelt sympathy in their hour of sorrow.

Alexia “Lexie” Muschalek
April 2, 1927 ~ October 13, 2024

Alexia “Lexie” Muschalek of Edna passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, at the age of 97. She was born April 2, 1927, in Ganado, Texas to Joe and Millie Surovec. She graduated from high school in 1944 and was married at Assumption Catholic Church on June 15, 1948. Lexie shared 62 wonderful years with Louis, the love of her life. From this union, her three children Debbie, Janice, and Kent were born.

While her children were young, they attended St. Agnes Catholic School where Lexie helped the Cordi Marian Sisters, the teachers through the Diocese of San Antonio, with whatever they needed. She took a special interest in the school carnivals and spent many hours donating her time to help make them fun, creative, and successful. Later when her children were older, she became a working Mom, first, at Moo Moo Milk Store, Zlotnik’s, and then Sears Catalog Center where she stayed for many years until she retired so that she could spend more time with her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly. In addition, not only was she a very good seamstress, making clothes for her children when they were young, she also helped them with clothing alterations and repairs for her grandchildren as they began to arrive. And of course, she spent many hours working in her flower beds, canning, and cooking produce from Louis’s bountiful garden. Lexie loved preparing meals and desserts for her family, always trying new recipes while perfecting old ones. Her children and grandchildren looked forward to going to Mamaw’s because they were sure to get ample amounts of her delicious food. Also, very important to her was volunteering at St. Agnes on Mondays with the counting committee. This was a must as well as her role within the funeral meals ministry. Always busy, Lexie found time to be an active member in the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Theresa #1350, KJZT, and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and her mother and father, Joe and Millie Surovec.

Lexie is survived by her children Debbie Sklar (IC), Janice Woodring (David), and Kent (Shelly); her sister, Georgia Farris, and her Goddaughter, Brenda Nichols. She had 11 grandchildren: Brittany Rozsypal, Shaye Johnson, Trey Sklar, Jenna Papetti, Eric Woodring, Natalie Farley, Lauren Massey, Travis Muschalek, Jessica Garza,

Cameron Larkin, and Angela Stuart. She also had 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mamaw always had hugs and kisses for all of them, and they loved her very much!

Visitation will be held on October 18 at 9:30 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 am followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 am.

Rev. Michael Petering will be the officiant, and interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. The burial is under the direction of Slavik’s Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Eric Woodring, Trey Sklar, Travis Muschalek, Zane Johnson, Jerome Rozsypal, P.J. Farley, Clinton Massey, Nicholas Papetti, and Robert Garza.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Hospice of South Texas at The Dornburg Center and Ganado Nursing and Rehabilitation for their warm, welcoming spirit, kindness, and compassion. A special thank you to Norma Guerra, Lexie’s caregiver, who helped take care of “Momma” for several years.

Brandon attended TSTC in Waco for INE. He was employed with Kinder Morgan. He was a hardworking, fun-loving man that loved his friends and family.

Dads are ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story tellers, and the ultimate protectors. There wasn’t a child that he met that didn’t feel his love. No life event was too insignificant, whether it was a powerlifting meet, a new baby, a wedding, or to get together with friends. He was a loving fiancé, father, son, and brother who will be dearly missed.

“I ain’t here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.”-Perfectly describes our Brandon.
