Rites Set For Gordon Massie, Gunshot Victim – Gordon Massie

La Ward—Graveside services were set for 5 p. m. today in Red Bluff Cemetery at Lolita for Gordon Massie, 68, who was found dead of a gunshot would Tuesday night. Rev H. O. Bilderback was to officiate with Psencik Funerlal Home in charge of arrangements.

Justice of Peace Floyd Goodman of Precinct 4 said today he was withholding his verdict in the death for further investigation. Mr. Massie, who operated a garage in La Ward, was found by a neighbor about 7 p. m. Tuesday in his apartment attached to the garage. He was dead of a head wound from a .22 rifle found on the other side of the bed from the body.

Massie was last seen alive Sunday evening and investigators estimated he had been dead from 16 to 20 hours when found.

Goodman is being assisted in the investigation by Justice of Peace Leslie Psencik of Ganado, who was called Tuesday night, and by Constable John Fitzpatrick of Lolita and Sheriff Lewis Watson. Watson told The Herald he believed Massie was accidentally shot while cleaning the rifle. He said the victim already had cleaned his shotgun, and that his gun cleaning equipment was found on the bed. However, as part of the investigation, fingerprints from the rifle have been sent to Washington to compare with Massie’s prints, taken while he was in military service.

Massie was a longtime resident of La Ward, but was a native of Massachusetts. His nearest relatives are a son and daughter in Massachusetts.
