Ramon Martinez, aged 37 years, well known Vanderbilt Mexican, was found dead on the Edna-Vanderbilt highway about six or seven miles south of Edna Monday afternoon about 1:30. Delbert Callaway discovered a car in the highway ditch and upon closer observation saw a man with his head and shoulders out of the car and his feet inside. Delbert said Martinez gasped a few times after he removed him to the ground, but that was about all. Judge Joe Cherry said he thought Ramon was killed when his car went into the ditch. The steering wheel was broken where it struck him in the pit of the stomach. However, Judge Cherry called a doctor to make an examination, and he, too, was convinced that the lick in the stomach caused Ramon’s death. Ramon worked for the Vanderbilt school as yard man for some time and was well thought of.
