LaMarquis Scott Lee, 12, of Ganado was taken home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. LaMarquis was a sweet, kind hearted and smart young man. His smile would light up any room and he found joy in making everyone around him laugh. He wore his school colors of maroon and white with great pride. He was a talented athlete with a competitive nature who will be missed by many. In his short time with us he has touched so many lives. Even though you are gone our sweet boy, you will never be forgotten. NEVER! LaMarquis was a champ at any sport he played. He loved football, baseball and basketball. He loved the LA Lakers and was a huge Koby fan. His favorite color was orange and he loved pizza and being online on the game. Anytime you heard someone yelling at the TV, you knew it was him. He was so bright and outgoing he enjoyed being with his family and friends. No matter where he was or where he went, he left his mark. Words will never be enough. Rest In Peace our Sweet Angel. Ganado Teen Remembered The Ganado Community was shocked and saddened to its core on Tuesday, Oct. 29 when a junior high school student was killed in a two-vehicle motor accident at the intersection of York and Brown near the Travel Center at 8:16 p.m. in the evening. Students and friends of LaMarquis Lee, a sixth grader at Ganado ISD, have been dealing with his loss and are doing all they can to honor him. Last Friday the entire student body wore orange to school. Orange was LaMarquis’ favorite color. LaMarquis was a football player in the Ganado Youth Football League, having played at the pee wee, junior and bantam levels. This season his team advanced to the super bowl. His bantam team decided to play the final game in honor of LaMarquis with his jersey number, 89, on each of their jerseys. Tidehaven defeated the Warriors 26-6 in the bowl game but Tidehaven named LaMarquis MVP of the game. They presented an engraved trophy to the team at the middle of the field after the game and the team then presented the trophy to his family. “He was in his fifth year playing youth football, said Doug Holt, his bantam coach. “This year he played offensive tackle and defensive end. We ran practically every offensive play behind him and he locked down his side of the field by himself on defense. He was the most well- mannered kid, very coachable. He helped his teammates tirelessly so that we could be the best team possible.” Landon Hicks, a friend and teammate of LaMarquis, said they enjoyed playing sports together. “Our team signed two footballs and gave them to his parents and family members. We have been friends since we started school and we also played video games together as a team,” said Landon. “We did pretty good on the video games.” Another friend, D.J. Cortright, said, “LaMarquis was a good friend to me, more like an older brother. He encouraged me on and off the field. During practice and games, he helped me correct any mistakes I made. He never gave up, had a positive attitude and never went without a smile. I will always miss him.” LaMarquis was as successful at school as he was on the field. His teachers had high praises for the young man. “When LaMarquis was in first grade we had the privilege of being his teachers,” said Stephanie Kelly, Melissa Fowler and Tina Gresham. “Every morning he would greet us with the biggest smile that would melt our hearts. LaMarquis was a very caring student. He always went above and beyond to help the other kids in class. He was also very competitive but in a good way. He knew how to leave the competitiveness out on the field but was very kind and patient with his classmates in the classroom. “He was chosen as the first grade student of the month and honored with a plaque at the school board meeting. His smile that night showed us just how proud he was of this award.” “I taught LaMarquis when he was in third grade,” said Nache’ Holub who is now the Special programs coordinator. “I was his Reading and Social Studies teacher and I remember he always had great manners and was always eager to learn. He would always ask if he could help with something and was always willing to volunteer to be first. I will miss his smile and competitive nature.” “LaMarquis was an amazing young man through and through,” said Tiffany Keszler, music instructor at Ganado Elementary. “From the classroom to the field of whatever sport he was playing, he always gave it his all. He always encouraged his classmates and teammates alike to do their best, play hard, and always leave it on the field or in the classroom. “I had the pleasure of teaching him for two years as well as getting the opportunity to have a personal relationship outside of school because of his close friendship with my son Fisher. I would pick him up for practice or games each week and we would talk about his day or what the game play was for which ever sport he was playing at the time. He was like a son to me and I know that he lived life to the fullest no matter what he was doing.” “He was one of my fifth grade students last year,” said Clara Conner. “I looked forward to him greeting me each morning with his softly spoken, ‘Good morning’, always followed by his beautiful smile. He was always very respectful answering with a ‘Yes, ma’am.’ “Since he moved on to sixth grade I had not seen him for a while. About a month ago I saw him at Dollar General. He and a friend were headed to football practice and getting something to drink for practice. With that beautiful smile of his, he walked over and gave me a hug. I asked about his team and how things were going for him at school. He told me sixth grade was going well and his team was having a winning season. As he walked out the door he turned, smiled, and waved saying, ‘Glad I got to see you today.’ I waved back as he turned and left. “I’ll keep that memory of him in my heart. LaMarquis touched many lives in his short life. He not only touched my life but my heart as well.” “LaMarquis had a kind and respectful heart,” said Jennifer Stephenson, Ganado Elementary principal. “He was the first to admit when he had done wrong and he would sincerely apologize. He was smart, athletically gifted and a loyal friend to his classmates.” Funeral services for LaMarquis were held Nov. 4 at the GISD football stadium. The district delayed the start of school so students and staff could attend the services. On the day of the accident, the 12-year-old was the only passenger in a Toyota Highlander driven by his grandmother. The second vehicle was a Ram pickup truck driven by an unidentified male who was alone in the truck. The accident is under the investigation of the Ganado Police Dept. Other agencies assisting at the scene of the accident were the Department of Public Safety (DPS), Jackson County Sheriffs Office, Edna Police Department, Ganado and Edna Fire Departments and the Jackson County Hospital EMS. “The families are in our thoughts and prayers,” said Dave Merritt, Ganado Police Chief. An account has been set up at First State Bank Louise in Ganado and Citizens State Bank. Donations may be made to the LaMarquis Lee Memorial Fund.
