Born 11 weeks premature, Sigmund James Keesecker came into this world a fighter on February 24, 2021. On April 28, 2021 Sigmund James Keesecker passed away unexpectedly at Detar Women and Children's Hospital. In two short months Sigmund left many footprints on so many people’s hearts. Sigmund leaves behind his loving parents Cody Keesecker and Carissa Shworles of Edna. His grandparents Maxine Keesesecker fiance Ray Patlaba; Gregory and Tracy Shworles. Aunt Courtney Keesecker, her son Liam Marquez. Uncles Jacob Shworles, Zachery Shworles wife Ashley. Great grandparents Cheyenne and Barbara Short. Peter and Kathi Shworles. Great great grandmothers Betty Keesecker and Dot Short. Special family/friends Bill, Vicki Moore; John, Pam and JW Edwards. And a host of many more family and friends. I wanted to thank my parents, all the doctor's, and EMS for saving my baby's life as long as they could. At 1:59am this morning me and Cody faced a parent’s worst nightmare, we lost our sweet baby boy. Only 1 week and 2 days at home with him and we lost him. He stopped breathing at home so my parents did CPR and brought him back while I called 911. When he got into the ambulance his body temp was 95.5, but they had him stable. Fast forward to the ER, his body temp was 98.8 when he arrived and alert not showing any signs so they assumed it was a small episode that happened and he was done, but then he had heart rate and oxygen drop while Cody was with him so they intubated him and he responded well with it, but by time we got to the back for his CT scan everything took a turn for the worst.. They tried reviving for an hour, but he was unresponsive the whole time. I'll never understand why things like this happen and I'm so mad at the world, I feel empty, and having to leave our baby boy at the hospital and not bringing him home with us destroys me and having to make funeral arrangements is going to destroy me even more. Coming home will never be the same and I really don't know what to do from here, I just want our baby boy back, I wish this was all a dream, and I wish we could just rewind time. We miss him so much already. It wasn't supposed to be like this. He was suppose to grow up and we were suppose to watch him grow and take care of him, he was suppose to grow up and build his own family, we were so ready to watch him get chunky because he was starting to pack on weight fairly quickly and now we don't have that anymore.. Now it's just pictures and memories. From my husband and myself we would like to thank everyone also but want to thank Officers Cheyenne Beaver for being there for me to hand Sigmund off to her and her bringing him fully through. Officer Bridget Bustamante also for being there for Sigmund and our family. They were the first to arrive and the squad wasn't far behind. Thank you all for quick response.-Carissa Shworles

Jackson County relatives and friends were shocked Tuesday when word came from San Antonio that Mr. Jim H. KNOPP had passed away. Many of his lifelong friends did not know that he was indisposed, and many others did not realize his condition was very serious when he was taken to a San Antonio hospital a few days before for treatment for a heart attack. He had suffered an attack at his ranch in the forks of the Carancahua and was taken immediately to San Antonio. The remains were brought to Edna Wednesday, December 17th, all that was mortal of this native Jackson County son, was laid to rest in the Edna Cemetery where a large concourse of relatives and old friends gathered to pay the departed their last tribute of respect. The funeral service was conducted at the family home in this city by Rev. C. I. KELLY, pastor of the Edna Presbyterian Church. JAMES H. KNOPP was a son of Mr. JOHN F. KNOPP and Mrs. LAURA BONHAM KNOPP, early Jackson County settlers. He was born October 23, 1872, at the old KNOPP home above Navidad post office and grew to manhood in that section of the county. While quite a young man he taught school at Navidad. Later he was elected county commissioner from that precinct which he represented for a number of terms. Later he moved to Edna and was elected sheriff and tax collector an office which he capably filled for several years. When these offices were separated he continued for several terms as tax collector. Still later he was elected tax assessor, and was filling this office at the time the law was passed combining it with the collector’s office. His affable disposition, his cherry greeting and friendly smile made JIM KNOPP a host of friends in all walks of life, and he had a large following in his native county who were always ready and willing to give him their loyal support in whatever political position he wished to take. Soon after moving to Edna, Mr. KNOPP entered the grocery business in a building that occupied the lot where the Stafford Sinclair Service Station is now located. In business, as in politics, JIM KNOPP’S friends were legion. Mr. KNOPP was married twice. His first wife was Miss LILLIE FORD. To this union were born two children, both surviving-Mrs. C.T. (VELMA) O’CONNOR of Houston, and Mr. CLYDE KNOPP of this county. Mrs. LILLY FORD KNOPP died many years ago. February 28, 1937, he was united in marriage to Mrs. ANGIE KRYGERof this city (Edna), who also is left to mourn his passing. To the bereaved family the Herald extends sympathy. - Edna Weekly Herald, Vol. No. 38, No. 39; Edna, Jackson County, Texas, Thursday, December 18th, 1941; H.K. Staples, Editor and Proprietor, Page 1.

Edna relatives and friends were shocked yesterday morning when announcement came that Shelby Knudsen, a native of Ganado, son of Mr. and Mrs. Forest Knudsen, prominent residents of that city, had passed away at his home in Houston Tuesday night after a brief illness. Robert (Bob) Korczynski, of Victoria, was born in Ganado to Victor and Elsie Korczynski on March 10 1945. He departed this life into eternal rest at age 78, on July 5, 2023. He attended schools in Ganado and graduated in 1963. After graduation he went to Barber School in Houston and joined his brother, Dan, and together they cut hair in the Sharpstown area. Realizing that Houston was not where he wanted to raise a family, he moved to Victoria., Texas, and went to work for DuPont where he worked until he was able to take an early retirement. After his retirement, cutting hair must have still been in his blood because he was still barbering part-time in Victoria when he passed away. If you wanted a really good haircut, or just a really good story or a corny joke, you could always count on Bob to deliver. Bob was an avid fisherman, a skilled gardener, and a very good bowler. One week before his death, he bowled in a no tap tournament in Las Vegas and bowled a very impressive 298. He took great pride in everything he did. He could catch more fish than anyone else and could grow vegetables bigger than anyone else. And those weren’t just tall tales he told his customers! He was affectionately known to his children, grandchildren, and all their families as Bob-Bob. He loved his family more than life itself and his passing will leave a hole in so many places in their lives. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dan Korczynski, infant sister Jospehine Korczynski, and daughter Susan Kirkpatrick. He is survived by his wife of 36 years Diana Korczynski, his daughter Kim Meyer (Jeff), Jennifer Gill (Reggie), Shannon Korczynski (David), Ashley Edwards (Torrie); his sons Corey Stuck (Angela), and son-in-law Don Kirkpatrick along with 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by by his brother Dick (Sarah), sisters Patsy Rasmussen (Kenneth), Joyce Roach (Jimmy), and sister-in-law Patty Korczynski. It is with heavy heart that I announce the passing of my youngest Uncle, Pete Kubečka. “Pete Junior”, as older family memebrs called him, was born in Cordele, Texas on 4 April 1942. He was the youngest of the eight children of Peter Frank and Frances Marie Barecky Kubečka. Tragically, his parents were lost together in an automoblie accident in 1958, when Pete was only 16 years old. He was also predeceased by his brothers Oswald and Leo Kubečka, and sisters Iola Tylich, Sybil Ruyle Hill, Florence Gary Braden, and Dagmar Ann Filip. He is survived by sister Erlene Psencik Zavadil and her husband John of Gonzales, and by brother-in-law Brendan Braden of Escondido, California. Pete is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was quite a fixture at Kubečka Family Reunions for over 50 years. The photo is from a reunion in the mid-1980s. All 8 of the Kubečka children were able to attend that year, and this is a close-up from a photo of them. He looked surprisingly similar to the way I looked when I eventually reached that age. Pete usually wore his hair longer, and the beard was a constant. Pete struggled after his parents died, but paved his own way and led an interesting, unconventional life. I’ve never known anyone who loved nature more than Pete, and it was my great pleasure to be invited to take a canoe ride with him a few miles down the Navidad River above Edna. No exciting rapids to navigate, just riding with the flow of the river, underneath the canopy of ancient oak trees. When we stopped for lunch on a sandbar, Pete taught me about a thorny vine whose young leaves and tendrils are edible. When I find these plants in my yard, I dig them up- they have sturdy rhizomes and rapidly grow back if they are just trimmed. I always eat a few sprouts first, though. They’re pretty tasty, and it always makes me think of Pete. Pete loved the country life, and walked great distances when he was young, just enjoying nature. He was a champion for the environment, and animals somehow seemed to sense that he was no danger to them.
Pete was beloved by his family and will be deeply missed. We
will remember him always in our thoughts and prayers. And a huge
THANK YOU to my beloved Aunt Erlene and Uncle Mr. John for all
that you did through the years to take care of Pete Junior. It
is greatly appreciated. |
