Linda Ann Hamons

March 21, 1948 - January 27, 2017

Linda Ann Hamons, of Ganado, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the age of 68. She was born in El Campo, Texas on March 21, 1948, to the late Lee D. Hamons, Sr. and Laura A. Wied.

Linda was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be missed dearly. Linda was El Campo’s very first polio victim of 1949. She was a patient at the Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation on and off throughout her childhood where she underwent many surgeries. She had a lovely voice and was chosen to sing at numerous events including the annual Christmas party at the Arabia Temple Crippled Children’s clinic in Houston as well as many other benefits and charity balls in Wharton County. On June 4, 1966, she married her sweetheart Wayne and moved to Bay City. Against medical advice, she had two children, and was a stay at home wife and mother. Linda was an exceptional baker and her specialty was homemade bread. She loved life and had a strong determination to live it to the best of her ability. She loved the color red, country and western music, pickles, and socializing with family, friends, and neighbors. Her strong faith in God made it possible to overcome all of the many obstacles she faced in her life. Linda continued to be a medical miracle for the rest of her life. Doctors were always amazed at the way she bounced back from illness. Her gradual decline in health was just too much to sustain any longer and she succumbed to the final ravages of post-polio syndrome.

She is survived by her daughter; Deanne Renee Barrie and her husband Christopher of Bay City; son, Russell Todd Melton of Bay City; sisters, Sandra Green (Howard) and Gail Hamons (Archie); brother, Lee Hamons, Jr. (Barbara); grandchildren, Chelsea Barrie, Russell Melton, Jr., Blaine Melton; great-grandchild, Ariella Melton; stepmother, Virginia Hamons; former husband, Wayne Louis Melton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Detar Hospital in Victoria as well as the staff at Ganado Nursing home for taking care of Linda until the end. Also a special thanks to those who visited her throughout the years because it was greatly appreciated.

John Wesley Hendry
The Final Call
Lolita Firefighters Lay One of Their Own to Rest in Jackson County

The final call for Unit 561 was answered with only silence.

Lolita volunteer firefighter John Wesley Hendry was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon at Red Bluff Cemetery in rural Jackson County after succumbing to cancer Jan. 6.

More than 100 people came to pay their respects.

On an afternoon unseasonably pleasant for January, a crowd of friends, family and fellow emergency personnel gathered in the quiet cemetery near the shores of Lake Texana. At the burial, the gentle sounds of cows mooing in adjacent fields, wind rustling the tops of live oaks and song birds chirping were broken by the shrill tones of an emergency call from Jackson County dispatch.

Static was followed by the radio’s squawk and then a voice.

“This is the last call for Unit 561, Wesley Hendry,” said the voice of Renee Stancik, Jackson County dispatcher, over the radio.

After the call, many in attendance began to openly show their grief as a bagpipe played “Amazing Grace.”

The radio call was the final ceremonial goodbye in an afternoon abundant with meaning.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Betty Hendry, the firefighter’s mother.

Hendry said she did not know how she would manager her grief.

“I have a hole in my heart I don’t think I’ll ever replace,” she said.

Preceded in death by his sister Carlene Hendry, Wesley Henry was his mother’s last surviving child, she said.

But he was loved by many others.

At Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna, dozens of uniformed firefighters and emergency personnel attended the service.

They wore badges and insignia showing their loyalties; departments from Victoria, Edna, Lolita, Corpus Christi and elsewhere in the Crossroads.

Two of the color guards carried fire axes with gleaming golden heads. Another of the guards dressed in red kilt and blue uniform, played somber tunes on his bagpipe.

Many of those without uniforms wore blue T-shirts emblazoned with “Wesley’s Warriors,” a community benefit that had raised funds for Hendry’s cancer treatment.

After discovering the cancer about two years ago the family’s community surrounded her son with support, buying about 1,500 of the shirts in a show of support, she said.

The T-shirts’ message echoed her son’s undying courage, Hendry said.

“He was a warrior,” she said. “He was a fighter. He never gave up.”

Although the cancer had finally beaten him, those who wore the T-shirts were carrying on the fight for the deceased firefighter.

“We wanted everybody to be a warrior for him today,” Hendry said.

After a funeral service filled with prayers, hymns and stories, Wesley Hendry’s casket was carried past saluting firefighters and into the back of a Lolita fire engine and to the cemetery.

“He was my everything…,” Betty Hendry said. “He was someone special—not only to me, not only to his mother but the whole community.”

She remembered her son as someone who would always help—no matter the cost—a characteristic of his personality demonstrated in the outpouring of support Tuesday.

“This is a small county, but they are so supportive with everybody,” Hendry said. “If somebody needs help, the community comes together. It’s a community and a family within itself.”
