Last week the Herald briefly mentioned that Mrs. Georgia Ann Tennison Heaton, Jackson County’s oldest citizen, passed away Wednesday night of last week at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. John Heaton of the Vanderbilt Prairie section. The funeral service was held at the Red Bluff Baptist Church, and was conducted by Rev. Frank Hollan, the pastor, assisted by Rev. J. S. Tierce of Vanderbilt and Rev. Carl Scholmach of Edna. The remains were laid to rest in the Red Bluff Cemetery where a large crowd of friends gathered to pay to this good woman their last tribute of love and respect. The pallbearers were Messrs. Francis and John Koop, Marvin Wiede, John and Olin Heaton, Frank Cobbs, J. W. Fowler and John H. Hamilton. Mrs. Georgia Ann Heaton was born in Alabama December 28, 1848, hence was 101 years, 2 months and 16 days of age. At the age of 19 she was united in marriage to Mr. Lewis Layfette Heaton in Alabama. He and Mrs. Heaton came to Texas in 1894, and settled in Navarro County. She came to Jackson County in 1914. For many years she made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Heaton, and after the passing of her son last year, she continued to make her home with Mrs. Heaton. Granny Heaton, as she was affectionately known by a great host of friends, had been a member of the Baptist Church for more than 85 years, and she had been active in all church work until her health failed. At the time of her death her membership was in the Red Bluff Baptist Church. For the past few years she had been confined to her bed, but she bore her affliction with true Christian fortitude. She was the mother of 5 sons, among whom were the late Mr. Will H. Heaton of the Red Bluff community and the late Mr. John P. Heaton of the Casa Blanca community. Her grandchildren residing in Jackson County are Mrs. Vera Woodruff, Mrs. M. L. Cobb and Messrs. John, Bunn and Vernon Heaton. Mr. J. P. Heaton, a well known and highly esteemed citizen of the Vanderbilt Prairie section, passed away suddenly Saturday morning, April 30th, at about 7:00 o’clock. His sudden passing was a shock to his family and friends notwithstanding the fact he had suffered for some time from heart trouble. John Presley Heaton was born September 12, 1891, near Birmingham, Alabama. He moved to Navarro County, Texas, in 1891 and in 1911 came to Jackson County. Mr. Heaton was married to Neva Lloyd December, 1906. To this union there were born four children who are still living, namely Jenelle Cobb of Edna, Bun and Vernon of the Casa Blanca community, and Burl Heaton of Houston. Aside from these loved ones, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Georgia Ann Heaton, who is 100 years of age, and a brother, Jim Heaton of Trinidad, Texas, together with many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. White in Jackson County, Mr. Heaton had resided in the Red Bluff community and the Casa Blanca community. He had been a life long member of the Baptist Church, being a member of the Vanderbilt Baptist Church at his death. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. S. Tierce, pastor of the Vanderbilt Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Frank Hollan, pastor of the Red Bluff Baptist Church, and Rev. Carl Schlomach, pastor of the Edna Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Red Bluff Cemetery. Services were conducted at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna and at the grave. Mr. Heaton was a man whose friends were legion, and there was a reason for this popularity. He was a good and pleasant man, a jovial and pleasant man in his dealings with his fellowman; a man who stood for the fine things of life, and a man who practiced his religion in every day life. It has been the pleasure of this writer to have known Mr. Heaton since 1914, and we valued his friendship because he was a good man and an upright and honorable citizen.
