Willie Hall

Edna—Funeral services for Willie Hall, 79, of Edna will be at 11 a. m. Saturday in the Cook-Butler Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Billy Young officiating.

Burial will be in the Chase Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C. L. and Cornelius Caesar; Booker T. Washington, Lawrence Hall, Henry Dennis and Buster Holland.

Mr. Hall was born Sept. 27, 1899 at Morales in this county, and died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Gladys Hargis

Edna—Gladys Hargis, 92, of Edna, formerly of Corpus Christi, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003.

She was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Edna, to the late Fletcher and Mary Ann Thomas Robinson. She was a retired restaurant cook and a member of St. Paul Methodist Church of Corpus Christi.

Survivors: daughter, Edith Weller of Victoria; sister, Eunice Boyd of Victoria; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: sons, Theodore Miller and Romane Hopes Jr.

Visitation will be 1 – 8 p. m. Monday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 11 a. m. Tuesday at Scruggs United Methodist Church of Edna, the Rev. Martin Williams officiating.

Paul Hargrove

Houston—Paul Hargrove, 89, of Houston, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998.

He was born Feb. 12, 1909, in Hallettsville, to the late A. T. and Maggie Goode Hargrove. He was a retired truck driver and was a member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors: sons, Clarence Hargrove of Chappell Hill, Emmitt Hargrove of El Campo and Douglass Hargrove of Houston; sister, Donnie Mar Haynes of Houston; eight grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: wife, Rosie Lee Hargrove.

Visitation will be held from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. Friday at Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 1 p. m. Saturday at True Light Baptist Church No. 4, in Edna, the Rev. Leola Davidson officiating.

Mrs. Rosie Hargrove

Edna—Mrs. Rosie Lee Hargrove, 67, of Houston, formerly of Edna, died Sunday in a hospital in Sweeny following a sudden illness.

She was born March 15, 1917 in Jackson County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at True Light Baptist Church No 4 in Edna, with the Rev. Sam Fisher officiating.

Burial will be in Chase Cemetery near Edna under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Hargrove of Houston; a son, O’Neal Hopes Jr.; three stepsons, Clarence Hargrove and Douglas Hargrove, both of Houston, and Emmitt Hargrove of El Campo; a sister, Mrs. Millie Norman of Edna; two brothers, Owen Jones and Acie Jones, both of Edna; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Chester Chase, John Miller, Douglas Tones, W. G. Tones, Lester Brown, Frankie Jones and Willie Caesar.

Alton Harris

Retired Master Sgt. Alton Ray “Jobbie” Harris of Edna passed away Friday, Aug. 9 at the age of 79. He was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Edna to the late Bertho and Rose Mae Carmichael Harris.

Alton retired from the United States Marine Corps with 27 years of service. During his time in service, he received The Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Supershooter Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal, Certificate of Appreciation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He was a loving companion, brother, step-father, godfather, uncle, and friend who will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his companion; Irvy Sroude; sister Ada Harris Reed from Columbiana, Ala. and Rose Marie Bolden of San Antonio; and step-daughters, Tessie Davis of Phoenix City, Ala. and Burnadette Jackson of Oceanside, Calif. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Alton is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flowrelle Harris; step-son, Jerry Avery; and brother, Billy James “Tiny” Harris.

Visitation was Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a. m. – noon with a funeral service at noon at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. Burial followed in Chase Cemetery in Edna with the Rev. Billy Joe Barns officiating.

Pallbearers were Rodney Reed, Ricky Aldridge, Billie Joe Jones, Harold Jones, Jimmy Lee Jones Sr. and Jerome Avery. Honorary pallbearers were all American Legion Members of Post 346.

Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna 361-782-2221.

Carolyn R. Harris

Victoria—Carolyn Ruth Brown Harris, 48, of Victoria, formerly of Edna, died Sunday, April 23, 2006.

She was born June 1, 1957, in Edna, to the late Sinclair and Mamie Randall Brown.

Survivors: two children; sisters, Deanna Hardway of Corpus Christi and Lula Parson of Edna; brothers, Rev. Hayward Robinson of Edna, Lawrence Ray Parson of Wharton, Lester Brown of Amarillo, and Ricky Brown of Ganado.

Visitation will be 6 – 8 p. m. tonight at Tracy’s M. J. Santellana Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 1 p. m. Wednesday at Scruggs Methodist Church, the Revs. J. D. Brown and Zettie Woodson officiating.

Clifton Harris

Edna—Clifton Harris, 84, of Edna died Sunday, Feb. 27, 1994.

He was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Edna to the late Charles and Ada Barnes Harris. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy. Mr. Harris was a retired ranch worker and a member of Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by: sisters, Oneal Harris Jones and Hazel B. Harris Mitchell; and brothers, Merkiel Harris, Bertho Harris and Charlie Harris Jr.

Services: 11 a. m. Thursday, Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Claude Prince officiating.

Burial: Chase Cemetery, Jackson County Funeral Home, Edna, 782-5201.

Irene Harris

Edna—Irene Harris, 74, of Buffalo, N. Y., formerly of Edna, died in a Buffalo hospital Friday, July 5, 1991.

She was born March 3, 1917, in Edna to the late Luther and Pearl Duke Harris and a Methodist.

Survivors: Sisters, Elizabeth Hopes of Edna, Mattie Brooks of Buffalo, Pearl Moody of San Antonio; and a brother, James Harris of Edna.

Services 1 p. m. Thursday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, the Rev. Pat Griffin officiating.

Services Held For Luther Harris, 71, Native of County

Funeral services were held from the Mt. Olive Baptist Church October 15, with Rev. B. W. Brooks officiating for Luther Harris, 71, of Star Route Edna, who died at his home Thursday, October 11, after an extended illness.

Mr. Harris was a native of Jackson County, a respected citizen, a retired farmer, and one who was held in high esteem by men of all races.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Pearl L. Harris; daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hopes, Mrs. Mattie B. Brooks, Miss Irene Harris, Mrs. Pearl Moody; son, James Harris; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, seven sisters and six brothers.

Cook’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Interment was in Morales (Chase) Cemetery.

Mrs. Abbie Haynes

Edna—Mrs. Abbie Haynes, 75, died in an Edna hospital early Wednesday morning.

She was born May 11, 1903 in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex Stafford.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p. m. in Roughts United Methodist Church in Morales with the Rev. Billy Young officiating.

Burial will follow in Chase Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna.

Surviving are six sons, Frank Hayes of Gahanna, Ohio, Herschel Haynes and Kenneth Haynes of Los Angeles, Jewel Haynes of San Antonio, Stanley Haynes of Houston and Rogers Haynes of Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Bell and Mrs. Ella Ross of San Antonio, Mrs. Emma Sneed of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Jack Stafford of San Francisco; and a sister, Dardia Sodia of El Campo; 32 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Albert Haynes

Edna—Funeral services for Albert Haynes, 99, of Edna will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday at the Peabody Street Church of Christ with Larry Gidry officiating.

Burial will be in the Chase Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Norvel, Claxton and Joe Ernest Butler, Calvin and Gilbert Haynes and George Norman.

Mr. Haynes was born Jan. 13, 1883, in Edna, and was a farm laborer before his retirement. He died Saturday in a local hospital.

He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Norman of Edna, Mrs. Delphinia Griffin of San Antonio, Mrs. Patsy Haynes of El Campo and Ms. Gracie Haynes of Phoenix; and four brothers, Ray of Edna, Owen of Victoria, Fred of Phoenix, Ariz., and the Rev. Leonard Haynes of Los Angeles, Calif.

Calvin Haynes

Edna—Calvin Haynes, of Edna died Friday, July 23, 1998.

He was born June 6, 1927, in Morales to the late Ray and Frances Reathy Haynes. He was a retired rice farmer and rancher and a member of Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Survivors: daughter, Maggie Ann Davis of Corpus Christi; sisters, Elmira Williams and Joyce Fay Haynes, both of Hayward, Calif.; brothers, Gilbert Haynes of Houston and Willie James Haynes of San Antonio; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a. m. Monday at Scruggs United Methodist Church, the Rev. Lawrence Washington officiating.

Fannie Haynes

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Haynes, 83, of Edna will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday at the Roughts Chapel United Methodist Church at Morales, with the Rev. Billy Young officiating.

Mrs. Haynes was born Oct. 28, 1896 in Jackson County. She died Monday in a local hospital.

Frances Haynes

Edna—Frances Haynes, 89, of Edna died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1993.

She was born Nov. 15, 1904, in Jackson County to the late Clarence and Bertha Gipson Reathy. She was a retired homemaker. Mrs. Haynes was a member of Sedahlia Chapter 257 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Scruggs United Methodist Church.

Survivors: daughters, Elmira Williams, Joyce Haynes, both of Hayward, Calif.; sons, Gilbert Haynes of Houston, Calvin Haynes of Edna and Willie James Haynes of San Antonio; brother, Lee Hopes of El Campo; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Also preceded in death by: husband, Ray Haynes, on Dec. 13, 1984; and brothers, Louis Reathy and Nathaniel Reathy.

Services for Frank Haynes, 70, who died Monday in San Antonio, will be held Friday at 2 p. m. at the Roughts Chapel in Morales. Burial will be in Morales Cemetery, with the Rev. E. J. Tanner officiating. Cook Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Keathal Haynes

El Campo—Kethal Haynes, 67, of El Campo, died Tuesday morning in Daly City, Calif., at the home of his daughter.

Born Sept. 8, 1914 in Jackson County, Mr. Haynes, a retired rice mill employee, was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and was a member of the Fred Douglas Lodge No. 253 in El Campo.

Funeral services will be held 10 a. m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in El Campo with the Rev. Barbara Miller officiating. Burial will be in Chase Cemetery in Morales, Texas under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Services.

He is survived by his wife, Audjorie of El Campo; a son, Keathal Haynes Jr. of Sicklerville, N. J.; two daughters, Marcella Giles of Corpus Christi, and Irma Fitzpatrick of Daly City, Calif.; three sisters, Cecil Caesar of El Campo, Lelia Richardson and Nettie Huff, both of San Diego, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be members of the Fred Douglas Lodge No. 253 of El Campo.

Owen Haynes Sr.

Edna—Owen Haynes Sr., 93, of Edna died Friday at a Victoria hospital following an illness.

He was born March 9, 1892, in Jackson County, son of Hilbert and Arminda Cook Haynes. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I.

Funeral services will be at 11 a. m. Monday at Scruggs United Methodist Church in Edna. The Rev. Maurice Washington will officiate.

Burial will be in Chase Cemetery in Edna.

He is survived by a son, Rufus Diggs of Houston; two brothers, Leonard Haynes of Los Angeles, Calif., and Fred Haynes of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Elvira Porter of El Campo, Beatrice Norman of San Antonio and Grace Towns of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie, and son, Owen Haynes Jr.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Haynes, Gilbert Haynes, Major Dennis Sr., Victor Rhoder, George Norman and Aldace Cook.

Ray Haynes

Edna—Ray Haynes, 82, a lifetime resident of Edna, died Thursday in an Edna hospital.

He was born Jan. 28, 1902, in Morales to the late Gilbert and Armenda Cook Haynes.

He was a construction worker and retired school bus driver

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Tuesday at Scruggs United Methodist church with the Rev. Maurice Washington officiating. Burial will follow in Chase Cemetery in Morales under the direction of Cook-Butler funeral home of Edna.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Haynes of Edna; two daughters, Mrs. Elmira Williams of Hayward Calif., and Mrs. Joyce Haynes of Sacramento, Calif.; three sons, Gilbert Haynes of Houston, Willie James Hayes of Phoenix, Ariz., and Calvin Haynes of Edna; three sisters, Mrs. Elvira Porter of El Campo, Beatrice Norman of San Antonio and Grace Towns of Phoenix, three brothers, Owen Haynes of Victoria, Leonard Haynes of Los Angeles and Fred Haynes of Phoenix; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Connie Henry

Edna—Connie Henry, 89, of Edna died Thursday in an Edna nursing home.

She was born July 2, 1895, in Wharton County.

Burial will follow in Chase Cemetery in Edna under the direction of Cook Butler Funeral Home.

Elma Hill

Edna—Elma Hill, 79, of Edna, died Monday, Dec. 17, 1990, in a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be at 1 p. m. Saturday at the Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Mims officiating.

Burial will be in Chase Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

She was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Jackson County, to the late Amos and Bitha Haynes Boston. She was retired.

Surviving are a daughter, Ms. Federal Ann Barnett of Edna; a son, Don Albert Sodia of Ganado; two sisters, Mrs. Estell Allen of Edna and Mrs. Ida Hargo of El Campo; a brother, Willie James Boston of Houston; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Albert Hopes Sr.

Edna—Albert Hopes Sr., 76, of Edna died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1993.

He was born May 16, 1917, in Morales to the late Lee Andrew and Bicie Harris Hopes. He was a retired Army sergeant.

Survivors: wife, Lois McWee Hopes of New Castle, Del.; daughters, Bicie Hopes and Gertha Hopes, both of New Castle, Del.; son, Albert Hopes Jr. of New Castle, Del.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: son, Arthur Lee Hopes.

Edna—Elizabeth Hopes, 82, of Edna died Friday, July 5, 1996.

She was born Jan. 6, 1914, in Morales to the late Luther Harris and Pearl L. Dukes. The homemaker was a member of the Church of Christ. She was a member of Eastern Star, and was a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors: son, Henry Hopes Jr. of Edna; sisters, Mattie B. Brooks of Buffalo, N. Y.; brother, James Harris of Edna.

Preceded in death by: husband, Henry Hopes.

Services will be held at 4 p. m. Monday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel, with Stan Adams officiating.

Burial will be at the Chase Cemetery. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 782-2152.

Henry Hopes Sr.

Edna—Henry Hopes Sr., 92, of Edna, died at his residence, Monday, May 4, 1992, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Hopes was born Oct. 21, 1899, in Jackson County to the late Charlie and Mary Taylor Hopes. He married the former Elizabeth Harris on July 28, 1938 at the Scruggs Methodist Church was a member of the Evening Sun Masonic Lodge No. 530, self-employed farmer and truck driver, operated a barbecue stand for 22 years, and was a member of the Robinson Street Church of Christ.

Survivors: wife; daughter, Ernestine Stafford of Edna; son, Henry Hopes Jr. of Edna; sister, Ada Wyatt of Victoria; and three grandchildren

Visitation begins 10 a. m. Tuesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel.

Services 11 a. m. Wednesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel, with Stan Adams officiating.

Leonard Hopes

Edna—Funeral services for Leonard Hopes, 83, of Morales will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at the Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. R. A. Hicks officiating.

Mr. Hopes was born Feb. 28, 1894 in Jackson County, and formerly operated a barbecue stand. He was a veteran of World War I. He died Friday in a Houston Hospital.

He is survived by a son, Roosevelt Hope of Denver, Colo.; sister, Ada Wyatt of Victoria; brother, Henry Hopes of Edna; seven grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Lonnie Hopes

Edna—Funeral services for Lonnie Hopes, 80, of El Campo, formerly of Edna, will be held at 11 a. m. Saturday at the Cook-Butler Chapel in Edna.

Burial will be in the Chase Cemetery near Edna under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Mr. Hopes was born March 1, 1897, at Morales and spent most of his life in Jackson County. He died Thursday in an El Campo Hospital.

Surviving are a son, Lee Hopes of El Campo; a sister, Mrs. Ada Price of Victoria; two brothers, Leonard and Henry Hopes of Edna, and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral Is Held For Newton Hopes

Funeral services were held last Thursday for Newton Hopes, 53, who was shot to death in a row at a local tavern several days before. Rites were at Mount Olive Baptist Church and burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery near Edna.

Surviving are two children, Johnny Ray of Edna and Castle Vernon of California; his mother, Polly Ann Haynes of Edna and six brothers and five sisters.

Owen Hopes Jr.

Owen Hopes Jr., 55, of Edna, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008. He was born Aug. 21, 1952, in Ganado, to the late Josephine Randle and Owen Hopes Sr.

He was a water backflow tester with Mercer Construction Co. and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sisters, Joan Charles, Dorene Thomas, and Brenda Hines, all of Houston; and brother, Timothy Hopes of Red Oaks.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today in the Cook-Butler Funeral Home chapel.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. G.L. Roberts officiating.

Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Romane Hopes

Edna—Funeral services for Romane Hopes, 65, of Edna, who died at his home Thursday after a brief illness, will be held at 1 p. m. Tuesday at Scruggs United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Billy C. Young will officiate with burial in Chase Cemetery under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Lincoln Edwards, Lorrian Jones, W. G. Tones, Douglas Tones, Thomas Dean and Clifford Ceasar. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Evening Son Lodge of Edna.

Mr. Hopes was born January 16, 1916, in Morales and was a retired truck driver.

Surviving are his wife, Maxine of Edna, a daughter, Mrs. Edith Stovall of Tamps, Fla.; brother, Albert Hopes of Edna; and a grandchild.

Arementa Horton

Edna—Armenta Horton, 65, of San Antonio died Monday in a San Antonio hospital afer a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Friday at the Scruggs United Methodist Church in Edna with the Rev. Paul G. Wilkinson of San Antonio officiating.

Burial will follow at the Chase Cemetery in Morales under direction of Cook-Butler Funeral Home of Edna.

Pallbearers will be Charles Daniels, Calvin Haynes, Emanuel Hawkins, Earl Greenwood, Jerry Hartfield, Hubert Callis, Hershel Callis and Eartel Callis.

Mrs. Horton was born May 20, 1918, in Morales and was an Edna resident through 1947. She was s housewife, a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church of San Antonio and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mary Louis Hawkins, Ms. Annett Marie Daniels and Ms. Anita Daniels, all of San Antonio; a son, Charles Daniels of San Antonio; a sister, Mrs. America Edwards of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.
