Maxine Parker Gates

December 20, 1929 - September 29, 2025

Maxine Parker Gates, of Edna, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, at the age of 95. She was born December 20, 1929, in Davenport, Oklahoma, to the late Elmer Franklin Parker and Jessie Holderreed Parker.

Her father’s work with Mobil Oil brought the family to LaSalle, Texas, where Maxine grew up. A gifted student, she graduated as valedictorian of Industrial High School in 1946.

On September 10, 1960, she married the love of her life, Darward G. Gates. Maxine worked for many years as a secretary for Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria and also at F.W. Woolworth, where she especially enjoyed finding little treasures to decorate her home.

Known affectionately as Mom, Grandma, Geegee, Mrs. Geegee, and Max, she filled her life with family, creativity, and joy. An avid quilter, Maxine always had a quilt in progress—whether piecing together a new top or hand-stitching one in the frame. She lovingly gifted quilts to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and friends. In addition, she was a talented knitter, crocheter, and crafter, creating beautiful blankets, table scarves, sweaters, and more. With her green thumb, Maxine’s yard was always filled with vibrant flowers and hanging baskets.

She had a playful side, too—enjoying trips to Louisiana casinos, often returning with jewelry, dishes, or small gifts for loved ones. Even in later years, her step would quicken at the thought of a gambling trip. She loved playing dominoes, especially with her grandchildren, and the family often teased about Jake McHenry being her “favorite,” though it was clear she cherished each grandchild and great-grandchild deeply.

Maxine was blessed with two devoted caregivers, Virginia Garcia and later Melissa Escamilla, who became part of the family and shared many adventures with her—including lunches at Olive Garden and Double J’s.

A faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria, Maxine attended regularly until moving to Edna in 2008.

She is survived by her son, Bobby Gerjes (Robin); daughter, Brenda Jacobs (Timmy); granddaughters, Shelly Davis, Stephanie Morgan (Chris), and Bobbi Jo Biehunko (John); grandsons, Shannon Srp (Julie), Jake Srp (Shelley), and Josh Srp (Laurel); step-grandsons, Cory Jacob (Mandy) and John Ross Jacobs; and step-granddaughters, Tandi Stewart and Jessica Barnes (Corey). She was blessed with 25 grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Darward Gates; parents, Elmer and Jessie Parker; brothers, Stanley, Thomas, Clifford, Howard, and Harold Parker; sisters, Helen Parker Evans, Dorothy Parker Porter, Ruth Parker Teal, and Geraldine Parker Broome; son, Randy Gerjes; and grandson, Brandon Gerjes.

The family would like to thank Kim and BJ Hicks for assisting in moving Maxine into Edna Grow in Grace so quickly. Even though her time there was short, she was well loved and cared for. We would also like to thank the doctors and staff at Citizens Hospital, as well as Hospice of South Texas - The Dornburg Center of Compassion, for the excellent care she received.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of South Texas, Dornberg Center of Compassion, 1005 Millette Drive, Victoria, Texas 77904; Grow in Grace, P.O. Box 281, Ganado, Texas 77962; or to the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Scott Teal, Curtis Teal, Marshall Teal, Billy Broome, Dylan Hase, Blayke Kubenka, Kyla Srp, and Parker Srp.

Services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, at Vanderbilt Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens of Victoria.

A. C. Green

Lolita – A. C. Green has “gone fishing.” A. C. Green passed away on Feb. 19, 2009 at Welford Hall Hospital, Lackland AFB in San Antonio. He was born Almuth Cornelius Green on July 30, 1921, in Vanderbilt, to Thad Monroe Green and Mary Lee Hudson Green. A. C. was one of nine children of which Leona Burney of Marble Falls is the sole surviving member.

A. C. was preceded in death by his brothers, Rueben, Harold, James and Otto; and sisters, Viola Stefka, Velma Dowdy and Verda Schlinke.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jane Green, formerly of Topeka. They have three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Bobbie Green of Port Lavaca. Cornell and Patricia Green of Yorktown, and Patrick and Lindy Green of Victoria. A. C. and Nancy have 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

A. C. graduated from Kingsville High School in 1939 while living with his sister Verda. He spent a year with the artillery in the Texas National Guard. He served with the army during World War II with the 103rd Regimental Combat Team of the 43rd Infantry Division. He saw extensive combat and participated in the savage fighting for the Liberation of Manila and in the brutal mountain fighting reducing the imposing Shimbu Line. After the battles in the Philippines, A. C. participated in the occupation of Japan. He separated from the Army in 1946. He earned the prestigious Combat Infantry’s Badge, two Bronze Stars, and numerous other awards and citations. He kept in contact with his foxhole buddy Ernie Head, visiting with him as recently as last week.

A. C. started his oilfield career selling drilling mud for Zarsky Lumber yard in Vanderbilt. Over the next 25 years he built and sold reputation as a petroleum engineer and field superintendent specializing in shallow oil and gas production in the Golden Crescent.

After retiring from the oilfield, A. C. turned his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing, into a successful career in the marine industry. He partnered with Ben Young owning the Sports Hub Sporting Goods Store on Lauren in the early ‘60s. He later became a partner and general manager for Power Cat Boats. It is white he was with Power Vat that he made what he considered his biggest contribution to the industry. A. C. was the first person to use a two-seat fresh water bass boat with a troll motor, make it unsinkable, and adapt it to salt-water fishing. He had great success with these boats fishing the flats in and around Port O’Connor and Matagorda Island. A. C. also owned Victoria Marine Sales on Main Street in Victoria until his second retirement.

Funeral services will be held at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna, Texas at 10 a. m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 and interment will follow afterwards at Memory Gardens of Edna Cemetery. A reception will be held afterwards at A. C.’s grandson’s house on County Club Road.

A. C. was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband to Nancy for 68 years having married in September of 1940. He will be missed by all. Dad has “gone fishing” one last time. All that knew him are confident that he had a FULL STRINGER AND THEY ARE ALL KEEPERS.

Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. 361-782-2221.
