San Antonio – John F. Gerjes, 95, died Wednesday. A native of Edna, he lived in San Antonio for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Lutheran church. Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p. m. at Memory Gardens in Edna under the direction of Porter Loring Funeral Home of San Antonio. The Rev. Richard Stone of the Edna Presbyterian Church will officiate. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Bratton and Mrs. Alma Lowrance, both of San Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Johnson of Pomona, Calif. and Mrs. Annie Cunningham of Spring; two brothers, Ed and Herman, both of Edna; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Edna – Services for O’Berah “Bede” Gerjes, 79 of Edna, formerly of Eagle Lake, who died in a Victoria hospital Friday, Feb. 28, 1992, after a brief illness, will be at 3 p. m. Sunday at Edna Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Harry L. Johnson officiating. Burial in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna, Jackson County Funeral Service Inc., Edna, 782-5201. Edna – Rachel Louise Sample Germer, 72, of Edna died Monday in a Victoria hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Edna with the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Mrs. Germer, daughter of Stephen Gibson and Edna Hurst Sample, was born Oct. 20, 1913, in Edna. An Edna High School and University of Texas graduate, she was an active member of First United Methodist Church including service on the board of trustees. She was also active in United Methodist Women, the Edna Study Club, the Thursday afternoon bridge club, Eastern Star, Edna Hospital Auxiliary, a life master in American Contract Bridge League and an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Mrs. Germer had recently become an honorary member of the Official Board of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. F. “Sandy” Germer, her parents and two brothers, Charles Hurst Sample and Steven Sample. Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Raybon of Edna and Diane Powell of Texas City; a son, Walter Frederick Germer Jr. of Mason; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mason – Walter Frederick Germer Jr., 56, of Mason and formerly of Edna died Monday, Sept. 16, 1996. He was born March 27, 1940, in Refugio to the late Walter F. Sr., and Rachel Louise Sample Germer. He attended Southern Methodist University and Southwest Texas State University and was all-state in football in 1957. Mr. Germer was a dealer in cut glass. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors: sisters, Marjorie Raybon of Edna and Diane Powell of Texas City. Memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Mrs. Laura B. Gholson, who has been in poor health for the past few years, died Friday afternoon, December 27th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. O. Sawyer of this city. The funeral service was held at the Slavik Funeral Home Saturday at 3:00 P. M., and was conducted by Rev. L. E. Barrett, pastor of the Edna Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery. Mrs. Gholson was born April 20, 1869, at Georgetown, Texas. It was in that city that she and Mr. Gholson were married. After his death, in 1918, Mrs. Gholson moved to Jackson County where she had since resided. During her long residence here she made many friends, all of whom were grieved to learn of her passing. Mrs. Gholson was a good woman; a good mother, and a devout Christian and a true and faithful friend. She is survived by four daughters and one son; Mesdames J. O. Sawyer of Edna, C. A. Davis of Navidad, Dock Cosper of Edna and J. V. Card of LaGrange, and Mr. J. D. Gholson of Texarkana. The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy in their hour of sorrow. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. from the Church of Christ for Mrs. Ella Mae Gibson, a Jackson County resident since 1909. Minister Arden Lawrence officiated and burial was in the Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jess Hoffmann, Robert Berryhill, Clyde Wade, Forest Wiegand, Bert Wiegand and Harvey Reynolds. Mrs. Gibson, who was 82, passed away in the hospital at Ganado about 6:40 p. m. July 3, following an illness of two weeks. She was born Dec. 27, 1874 in Goliad County and moved to this county in 1909. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Mrs. Gibson is survived by two daughters, Alice Hoffer and Miss Jessie Gibson, both of Edna; and three sons, H. O. Gibson of Edna, A. F. of Beeville and E. L. of East Bernard; and 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She also leaves one brother and six sisters.

Funeral services were held here Saturday at 2 p. m. for Frank Gibson, 70, a professional ball player for 20 years, ten years in the majors. He died of a heart attack at his home at 309 South Pumphrey St. at 1:30 p. m. April 27. Rites were at Slavik Funeral Home and burial was in Edna Cemetery with Rev. James Hudson, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating. Pallbearers, all Masons of Austin, his former home, were M. K. Milliron, Albert Ross, Pat Adelman, T. O. Lang, Jessie Raven and E. D. Stuessy. Mr. Gibson was born September 27, 1890, at Omaha, Neb. He moved with his parents to Texas at the age of 17 and soon entered the baseball ranks, appearing with various minor league teams until he was signed by Detroit as a catcher about 1913. He was with the Tigers for one year and then was sold to the old Boston Braves, remaining for nine years. He later managed the San Antonio team of the Texas League. He came to Edna two years ago after being employed with the city power department at Austin for some 30 years. Mr. Gibson was a member of the Episcopal Church and was extremely active in Masonic work, being a member of Parsons Lodge No. 222, AF&AM, of Austin, Austin Scottish Rite bodies and Ben Hur Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Edna Lions Club and was active in Babe Ruth League youth baseball in Austin and Little League baseball in Edna. Gibson actually started his baseball career in 1910 when he was a member of the famed “Irish Lad” semi-pro team at Wichita Falls. He graduated to the Texas League for the seasons of 1911 and 1912, and from there he went to the big leagues, first with Detroit and later with Boston of the National League. He was a catcher in the line-up of the Braves on March 12, 1925, when the New York Yankees played their first spring exhibition game at St. Petersburg, Fla. He collected two hits in five trips to the place, one of them being a double. Gibson returned to the Texas League in the late 20’s, and at one time managed San Antonio. He finished his active career in the International League, but maintained his interest in the game as an umpire of Southwest Conference games. In 1923 he assisted the late Uncle Billy Disch in coaching the University of Texas nine. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Dugger Gibson of Edna; a son, Frank Gibson Jr., of Houston; four stepsons, Wendel, Joe, Royce and Gene Faulkner of Austin, and eight grandchildren.

Cleburne – Services for Retired SSgt. Howard L. Gibson of Cleburne and formerly of Edna, who died Saturday, will be at 10 a. m. Tuesday at Oaklawn Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. Oaklawn Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2221.
