Sidney Ray Gandy, of Sealy, Texas, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born in Morales, Texas, on October 31, 1939, to the late Russell O. Gandy and Laura Laughter Gandy. Sidney worked as a welder for many years. He was a dedicated father and grandpa, known for his love of family, dedication to his church, and faith. Sidney loved baking, cooking, and canning, along with a passion for gardening. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Sidney is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary Treadway Gandy. Daughters Vicki Dorsett and husband Larry, Sandy Dobson, JoEllen Dillon and Malinda Mesko. Son David Gandy and wife Rose. Ten grandchildren, Twenty great grandchildren, and One great great grandchild. Numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Sybil Harris; brothers, Roland Gandy, Otto Gandy, Harvey Gandy, Wallace Gandy, and Earl Jean Gandy; one grandchild; one great grandchild. The pallbearers will be six of Sidney’s grandchildren Kristofer Johnson, Andy Dorsett, Xavier Dubose, Kristian Debose, Aubri Mesko, and Tucker Jones. Services for Sidney will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel, visitation is from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m., Burial will take place immediately after the service in the Flournoy Cemetery in Morales. San Antonio – John F. Gerjes, 95, died Wednesday. A native of Edna, he lived in San Antonio for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Lutheran church. Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p. m. at Memory Gardens in Edna under the direction of Porter Loring Funeral Home of San Antonio. The Rev. Richard Stone of the Edna Presbyterian Church will officiate. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lydia Bratton and Mrs. Alma Lowrance, both of San Antonio; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Johnson of Pomona, Calif. and Mrs. Annie Cunningham of Spring; two brothers, Ed and Herman, both of Edna; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Edna – Services for O’Berah “Bede” Gerjes, 79 of Edna, formerly of Eagle Lake, who died in a Victoria hospital Friday, Feb. 28, 1992, after a brief illness, will be at 3 p. m. Edna – Rachel Louise Sample Germer, 72, of Edna died Monday in a Victoria hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Edna with the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Mrs. Germer, daughter of Stephen Gibson and Edna Hurst Sample, was born Oct. 20, 1913, in Edna. An Edna High School and University of Texas graduate, she was an active member of First United Methodist Church including service on the board of trustees. She was also active in United Methodist Women, the Edna Study Club, the Thursday afternoon bridge club, Eastern Star, Edna Hospital Auxiliary, a life master in American Contract Bridge League and an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Mrs. Germer had recently become an honorary member of the Official Board of the First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. F. “Sandy” Germer, her parents and two brothers, Charles Hurst Sample and Steven Sample. Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Raybon of Edna and Diane Powell of Texas City; a son, Walter Frederick Germer Jr. of Mason; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mason – Walter Frederick Germer Jr., 56, of Mason and formerly of Edna died Monday, Sept. 16, 1996. He was born March 27, 1940, in Refugio to the late Walter F. Sr., and Rachel Louise Sample Germer. He attended Southern Methodist University and Southwest Texas State University and was all-state in football in 1957. Mr. Germer was a dealer in cut glass. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors: sisters, Marjorie Raybon of Edna and Diane Powell of Texas City. Memorial service will be held at 11 a. m. Mrs. Laura B. Gholson, who has been in poor health for the past few years, died Friday afternoon, December 27th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. O. Sawyer of this city. The funeral service was held at the Slavik Funeral Home Saturday at 3:00 P. M., and was conducted by Rev. L. E. Barrett, pastor of the Edna Baptist Church. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery. Mrs. Gholson was born April 20, 1869, at Georgetown, Texas. It was in that city that she and Mr. Gholson were married. After his death, in 1918, Mrs. Gholson moved to Jackson County where she had since resided. During her long residence here she made many friends, all of whom were grieved to learn of her passing. Mrs. Gholson was a good woman; a good mother, and a devout Christian and a true and faithful friend. She is survived by four daughters and one son; Mesdames J. O. Sawyer of Edna, C. A. Davis of Navidad, Dock Cosper of Edna and J. V. Card of LaGrange, and Mr. J. D. Gholson of Texarkana. The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy in their hour of sorrow. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p. m. from the Church of Christ for Mrs. Ella Mae Gibson, a Jackson County resident since 1909. Minister Arden Lawrence officiated and burial was in the Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jess Hoffmann, Robert Berryhill, Clyde Wade, Forest Wiegand, Bert Wiegand and Harvey Reynolds. Mrs. Gibson, who was 82, passed away in the hospital at Ganado about 6:40 p. m. July 3, following an illness of two weeks. She was born Dec. 27, 1874 in Goliad County and moved to this county in 1909. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Mrs. Gibson is survived by two daughters, Alice Hoffer and Miss Jessie Gibson, both of Edna; and three sons, H. O. Gibson of Edna, A. F. of Beeville and E. L. of East Bernard; and 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She also leaves one brother and six sisters.

Funeral services were held here Saturday at 2 p. m. for Frank Gibson, 70, a professional ball player for 20 years, ten years in the majors. He died of a heart attack at his home at 309 South Pumphrey St. at 1:30 p. m. April 27. Rites were at Slavik Funeral Home and burial was in Edna Cemetery with Rev. James Hudson, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating. Pallbearers, all Masons of Austin, his former home, were M. K. Milliron, Albert Ross, Pat Adelman, T. O. Lang, Jessie Raven and E. D. Stuessy. Mr. Gibson was born September 27, 1890, at Omaha, Neb. He moved with his parents to Texas at the age of 17 and soon entered the baseball ranks, appearing with various minor league teams until he was signed by Detroit as a catcher about 1913. He was with the Tigers for one year and then was sold to the old Boston Braves, remaining for nine years. He later managed the San Antonio team of the Texas League. He came to Edna two years ago after being employed with the city power department at Austin for some 30 years. Mr. Gibson was a member of the Episcopal Church and was extremely active in Masonic work, being a member of Parsons Lodge No. 222, AF&AM, of Austin, Austin Scottish Rite bodies and Ben Hur Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Edna Lions Club and was active in Babe Ruth League youth baseball in Austin and Little League baseball in Edna. Gibson actually started his baseball career in 1910 when he was a member of the famed “Irish Lad” semi-pro team at Wichita Falls. He graduated to the Texas League for the seasons of 1911 and 1912, and from there he went to the big leagues, first with Detroit and later with Boston of the National League. He was a catcher in the line-up of the Braves on March 12, 1925, when the New York Yankees played their first spring exhibition game at St. Petersburg, Fla. He collected two hits in five trips to the place, one of them being a double. Gibson returned to the Texas League in the late 20’s, and at one time managed San Antonio. He finished his active career in the International League, but maintained his interest in the game as an umpire of Southwest Conference games. In 1923 he assisted the late Uncle Billy Disch in coaching the University of Texas nine. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Dugger Gibson of Edna; a son, Frank Gibson Jr., of Houston; four stepsons, Wendel, Joe, Royce and Gene Faulkner of Austin, and eight grandchildren.

He died Sunday in a Victoria hospital. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara Gibson of Edna; two daughters, Mrs. Susie Mae Hadley of Edna and Mrs. Cleo Lynett Thurmond of Rock Spring, Wyo.; a son, Howard Lee Gibson with the Army Air Force in South Carolina; and 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Edna – Funeral services for Jessie Myrtle Gibson, 69, of Edna, who died Friday at a local nursing home, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. Miss Gibson was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Jackson County to the late Henderson L. and Ella Mae Gibson. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Edna – Jack Gillespie, 73, a prominent Jackson County farmer, died Wednesday morning following a heart attack while operating a tractor on his farm five miles northwest of here. A passerby found the body near the tractor. Mr. Gillespie was a county commissioner in Pct. 1 from 1941 to 1946, was a member of Edna Masonic Lodge 767 and Edna Presbyterian Church. Born July 19, 1894, in Falls County, he had been a resident of Jackson County for many years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. G. W. Crofoot, Jr., pastor of Edna Presbyterian Church and the Rev. Joe Webb, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Chester Evans, Pete Layden, Dr. Bud Lee, Calvin Evans and Lloyd Reed. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Gillespie of Edna; a sister, Mrs. Estelle Kone and a nephew, Woods Kone, both of San Marcos.

Edna – Mrs. Josephine Scott Girdner, 58, of Houston, a former resident of Jackson County, died Friday in a Houston hospital. Mrs. Girdner was a clerk in a department store for many years and had resided in Houston for 16 years. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Ganado – Alton P. Girndt, 79, of Ganado, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008. He was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Jackson County, to the late Alvin E. Girndt and Elizabeth J. Winter Girndt. He was a heavy equipment operator for Hunt Contractors of Edna. He was a U. S. Army WWII veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Ganado. He is survived by his wife his wife, Trois Marthiljohni Girndt of Ganado; daughter, Penny Girndt Smith of Ganado; sons, Rodney Alton Girndt of Palacios and Jimmy Weston Girndt of Ganado; sister, Mary Rose Wileman of LaVernia; brother, Lawrence Gene Girndt of Ganado; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Alvin Nick Girndt; and brother, Bobby Joe Girndt. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p. m. Friday, March 21, at Ganado Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Ganado Lutheran Church for Edwin F. Girndt, 91, well-known retired Jackson County farmer. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery, with Slavik Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Girndt was born March 12, 1870 in Columbus, Texas, but lived in Jackson County from 1917 until 1960, when he moved to Flatonia. He passed away in the Mauritz Memorial Jackson County Hospital on August 22, following an illness of four days. He is survived by four sons, W. A. and E. O. Girndt of Edna, A. E. of Ganado, and W. L. of Temple; and two daughter, Leona Reve of Port Lavaca and Laura Crawther of New Orleans, La.

Ganado – Elizabeth J. Girndt, 81, of Ganado, died Friday in a local hospital following a brief illness. She was born July 21, 1905, in Lincoln, Neb., to the late Herman and Sabina Rose Eberhart Winter. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Ganado. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow the services in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna under the direction of Jackson County Funeral Service. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Rose Burt, of Ganado; three sons, Alton P., Bobby J., and Lawrence G. Girndt, all of Ganado; ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Edna – Georgia Marie Girndt, 99, of Edna, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999. She was born May 10, 1900, in Yoakum, to the late Joseph S. and Nancy Ann Brown Porche. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and Legion of Mary. Survivors: sons, Porchie Girndt of Edna and Donald J. Girndt of Alvin; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband, Walter Anthony Girndt; one sister; and seven brothers. Edna – Louise Volkmer Girndt, 98, of Edna, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 at her residence. She was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Edna, to the late Joseph Volkmer and Agnes Teuber Volkmer. She was a homemaker and last charter member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Edna. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin “Boots” Girndt; sister, Anna Volkner Upchurch; and brothers, Frank Joseph Volkmer, Joseph Frank Volkmer, and Fredrick Paul Volkmer. Visitation was 4 – 8 p. m. Monday, April 5, 2010, with a rosary recited at 7 p. m., at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a. m. today, April 6, 2010 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with burial at Memory Gardens of Edna. Many hearts were made sad Monday March 1st, when word came from the Girndt household, a few miles east of Edna, that the mother of this home, Mrs. Mary Louise Girndt, wife of Mr. E. F. Girndt, has passed away. Death did not come in a sudden manner for she had been desperately ill for the past week or two following a stroke. The funeral service was conducted at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning by Father David Buckley, the pastor. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Messrs. R. A. Drake E. T. Rose, Adolph Novasad, Marcell Maresh, Floyd Goodman and Shorty Meyers. Mrs. Girndt was born Louise Engbrock, in Fayette County, July 20, 1870 being a member of a well-known and prominent family of that county. At Fayetteville in 1892, she was united in marriage to Mr. E. F. Girndt, also a member of a well-known Fayette County family. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Girndt and children moved to Jackson County, settling in the Ganado section. Later they bought a home just east of Edna on Highway 12, near the home of their son, Mr. Walter Girndt. Mrs. Girndt was a faithful member of the Catholic Church for many years, and she was loved and esteemed by neighbors and a large circle of friends for her many admirable attributes of character. In her passing Jackson County loses a loyal and worthy citizen, her husband a devoted and faithful wife and her children a fond and loving mother. She is survived by her husband Mr. E. F. Girndt, and the following children: Mr. W. L. Girndt of Temple, Mrs. Leona Reue of Green Lake, Mr. Alvin Girndt of Ganado, Mr. Walter A. Girndt, of Edna, and Mr. E. O. (Boots) Girndt of Edna, and Mrs. Laura Crowter of LaFayette, La., and a number of grand children. To all these bereaved ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

Edna – Walter Anthony Girndt, 87, of Edna, died Saturday in a Victoria hospital. He was born Dec. 20, 1899, in Ellinger, son of the late Edwin and Mary Louise Enbrock [Engbrock] Girndt. A retired grocer, he was the owner and operator of Girndt’s Grocery from 1937 until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church where he served as an usher. He married the former Georgia M. Porche on May 14, 1930, in Edna. Surviving are his wife, Georgia M. He passed away June 23 at his residence on the Navidad Road, following a sudden illness. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Gloor is survived by his widow, Eunice Gloor of Edna, and one son, Billy Ray Gloor of Blanco, and three grandchildren. Edna – Funeral services for Henry “Al” Goerisch, 79, of Edna, who died Saturday in a Victoria hospital following a short illness, will be held at 4 p. m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Edna. Burial is under the direction of Jackson County Funeral Home. He was born April 28, 1909, in Findley, Ohio. He had worked as a smelter foreman in Arkansas, and then had moved to Port Neches, where he worked as a chemical plant guard captain for Jefferson Chemical until his retirement. He moved to Edna in 1977. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, was past president of Jackson County’s American Association of Retired Persons, past master of Edna Masonic Lodge No. 767 AF&AM and past patron of the Edna Chapter No. 592 Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Manning of Edna, Mrs. Annette Young of Alma, Ark., and Lydia Dyson of Grand Chenier, La.; two sons, William Goerisch of Blevins, Ark. and Charles Goerisch of Florida; a brother, Robert Goerisch of Edmonds, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Jesse Gomez Sr., operator of a dry cleaning shop in Edna, died Monday in Houston after an illness of one day. Gomez, age 47, was a native of Gonzales where he was born Sept. 29, 1907. He lived here at 515 Cypress St. Funeral services were conducted in the Saint Agnes Catholic Church at 10 a. m. Wednesday. The Rev. Altamira of El Campo officiated. Edna – Funeral services for Ben Good, 59, Edna rancher and business man, will be held 10 a. m. Wednesday from the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery, under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Mr. Good, a native Texan, was born on July 2, 1913. He was a rancher and until recently had owned the Edna Meat Center. He formerly had served as county sanitarian, and later was welfare department agent. Mr. Good was a former board member in the Chamber of Commerce and Fair Association and member of the Lions Club, Cattle Raisers Association and Farm Bureau. He died at his home on Star Route Monday morning from a heart attack. Surviving are his wife, Mary Eunice Good of Edna; a daughter, Mrs. Ola Joyce Webster of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma McClellan of Dallas and Mrs. Ella Harris of Midland; two brothers, Carver and Edgar Good, both of Edna; and two grandchildren. Juan Vicente Guillen, 43, of La Ward, Texas passed away May 18, 2025. He was born September 27, 1981 in Palacios, Texas to the late Ignacio Guillen, Sr. and Blanca America Tijerina Guillen. Juan worked as a mechanic millwright for many years, among many other professions, He made sure to keep the lights on at night for anyone. He loved his family more than anything in this world. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone. He had a love for cars, especially his Mustang, which he cherished. Juan made many friends throughout his 43 yrs of life. Juan was truly one of a kind, a loving kind man with a heart full of compassion he touched the lives of everyone he met. He was a genuine, humble, loving, caring person who lit up every room he came into. He was funny, always making jokes and trying to make the best of every situation. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness and strength, the gifts that never fade. The memories we all have of him should be what keeps his memory alive in our hearts. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, May 30, 2025 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home with Deacon Wally Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at the Midfield Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ignacio Guillen Jr., Hunter Saavedra, Evan Saavedra, Lane Saavedra, Fernando Saavedra, Samuel Saavedra Jr., Alejandro Ramirez and Charles Lee Bradley.
