Archie Gabrysch Killed By Lightning On Farm Tuesday

The people of Edna and vicinity were grieved and shocked late Tuesday afternoon when word came from the Gabrysch home, a few miles east of town, that Archie Gabrysch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gabrysch, had been killed by lightning. A cloud with a light rain and some lightning came up from the east about 4:00 p. m. Tuesday, but few people in Edna realized there was any danger in it.

Archie, aged 26, and his brother, Mark, had been plowing in the field that afternoon with tractors. Before the cloud and lightning came, Mark’s tractor refused to run and he went to the house. When the cloud came over the family noticed that lightning was striking close by, and a few minutes later Mark discovered that his brother’s tractor was running in high, with all plows out of the ground and was cutting through the field. When he saw that it continued into the field fence, he called his father and remarked that something was wrong. The fence had stopped the tractor and Mr. Gabrysch and Mark found Archie slumped over the steering wheel dead. Archie evidently had stopped his work and started toward the house when he was struck. Small burned placed high on his chest and lower down on his body were the only visible signs the bolt of lightning left.

The funeral service was held Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. Father David Buckley, his pastor conducting the last rites.

Archie was born in Gonzales County July 20, 1921, and moved to Jackson County with his parents October, 1926. The family bought a farm a few miles east of Edna, near the Navidad River. During the late war Archie served his country three years, a large part of that time was served in Africa and Italy. After being mustered out of service he returned home and resumed his farming operations. He had been a member of the Catholic Church since childhood, and was considered by his friends and acquaintances as a man of high principles and one who loved his fellowman; a man who was a good neighbor in every sense of the word, a useful citizen to his community and county. The tragic death of this young man will be mourned by many.

Besides his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Frank Gabrysch, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Woodrow Wagner of Victoria and Mrs. Newton Baker of Wood High School community, Victoria County, and seven brothers, Messrs. Emery, Alfred, Adolph, and Mark of Edna, and Alonzo, Daniel and Edwin of Victoria.

Dave Grimland

Dave Grimland passed away quickly and painlessly at home on Oct. 18, 2018.  He was a husband, father, grandfather, son, diplomat, storyteller, educator and friend to many.  Born in Roswell on February 20, 1944, Dave grew up in both New Mexico and Texas, living in Edna from age 8 to 17 and graduating from Edna High School. He received both a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Texas before entering the U.S. Foreign Service.  He served his country as a public information officer in Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Bangladesh and India.  His daughter, Debra, was born in Greece and son, Michael, while posted in India. Dave regularly commented that his most foreign posting was in Washington, D.C.

Dave moved with his wife, Kathleen, and son, Michael, to Columbus, MT in 1995 and greatly enjoyed working on his land on Shane Ridge:  thinning trees, chopping firewood, plowing snow and especially managing the rainwater collection system he designed.

Dave was a talented storyteller with a plethora of accomplishments and misadventures overseas.  After much encouragement from those close to him, Dave finally put some of the tales on paper and published a book, Journey to Ithaca, in 2015.  Post 9/11 Dave felt compelled to inform his neighbors about Islam because of his positive experiences living in Muslim majority countries and his close friendships with Turks. After an appearance in the New York Times where his work was prominently featured, he traveled throughout Montana and across the country giving talks on Islam.

Earlier traumas, especially his work at the Cyprus embassy in 1971, when the American Ambassador, Roger Davies, was killed and the country of Cyprus was at war, took a toll and Dave’s health started declining in 2015. He continued to write, focusing on poetry and sharing his work widely in person and online.  To the end, Dave made new friends wherever he could during his walks around town.

Dave is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ralph, son, Michael Grimland, daughter, Debra Grimland Leerssen (Scott), grandchildren Joshua and Hannah.  Special friends who brought Dave to Montana are Jim Dickey and Sally Bisch with their daughters Shanta Milne and Anju Bisch. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Project Hope of Columbus and Yellowstone Public Radio.
