A tragedy struck at a Ganado home last Thursday when S. E. Farris, 47, was accidentally killed while at work at his ranch. Thursday morning about 7:00 o’clock Mr. Farris left for the ranch, about 12 miles north of Ganado, a part of the Wilbeck estate. He told Mrs. Farris he had to dig some post holes and fix a fence, however, he would be home for lunch. When he did not return home at noon, Mrs. Farris became worried and went to the ranch about 1:30. She found him at the Wofford gate near the post hole digger. It seems that Mr. Farris’ shirt sleeve must have caught on part of the digger which was rigged to a tractor. He was badly mangled, one arm being almost severed and cut through the abdomen. He evidently was killed early in the morning as he only had eight holes dug. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 6, at 2 p. m. at the Ganado Methodist Church, with Rev. O. M. Nyquist officiating, with Revs. D. E. Hogan and Thomas assisting. Interment was made in the Ganado Cemetery. The Ganado Funeral Home was the director. Pallbearers were: Elbert Farris, Jr., H. A. Turner of Alvin, Otto Flendisen of Webster, and Sidney Wilbeck of Hungerford. Samuel Elbert Farris was born at Benton, Texas, moving to Ganado with his parents while very young. He spent most of his life in or near Ganado. He had been an employee of the Sterling Oil Company for a number of years. Survivors are: His widow, Mrs. Della Farris; one son, Elbert, Jr., of Ganado; two daughters, Mrs. Otto Fiendisen of Webster and Mrs. H. A. Turner of Alvin; two grandchildren; two step-daughters, Mrs. Margaret Sunday of Houston and Kathryn King of Ganado; his father and step mother, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Farris of Ganado; one brother, Carl, of Los Angeles, California; two sisters, Mrs. E. E. Kist of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Frank Donaldson of Houston.

Mr. Oscar Fitch, a well known Edna Café operator, died Tuesday at 1 a.m. from injuries received Sunday when a car in which he was riding turned over near Corpus Christi. Mr. Fitch, Miss Sarah Hessong and J.H. Frazier, were in Mr. Frazier’s car, enroute to Corpus Christi when a rear tire blew out, causing the car to turn over. Miss Hessong received a broken collar bone and the two men, while shaken up a bit, were not thought to have been injured. Miss Hessong was taken to a hospital for treatment. The car, which had only turned on its side, was righted by Mr. Fitch and Mr. Frazier, who went to Corpus for Miss Hessong, who was released from the hospital, and returned home late Sunday afternoon. En-route home Mr. Fitch complained of his head and neck paining him, and when he arrived in Edna a physician was called and he was put to bed. While he was suffering a great deal, he was not thought to be in any danger, and as late as Monday night he seemed to be getting along alright. However, he passed away while asleep about 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, presumably from a blood clot on the brain. Funeral services were held at the Hevelka Funeral Home in this city (Edna, Texas) Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., with Mr. Roy Stevens, Christian minister of Houston, conducting the service. Burial will be held in the Salem Cemetery in Lavaca County today. Oscar Fitch was born June 4, 1890, near Sweet Home in Lavaca County, the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.J. On September 22, a deceased body was located on the side of FM 234 N. in El Toro. The body was searched and determined to have been deceased for possibly two weeks and deposited on the road. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was unable to identify the deceased person at the scene and put out a request on Facebook, asking for help identifying the person. On October 8, the JCSO put up a post, stating the person had been identified. The post reads “The deceased person that was found on FM 234 N on 9/22/2021 has been identified. JCSO Investigations has been working diligently in partnership with the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office and Jerry Passement with Border Patrol Missing Migrant Division. “Family members in Houston, TX heard about the investigation thru our Facebook post that many of you shared. A concerned family member then contacted JSCO on Saturday, 10/2/2021, and reported a missing family member from Guatemala that could possibly be our victim. The victim was identified as 65-year-old Luis Eduardo Garcia Fuentes, an immigrant from Guatemala. Garcia-Fuentes entered the United States illegally and unfortunately died during his journey, the cause of death is still under investigation. The Guatemalan Consulate Office has been notified, and Garcia-Fuentes has been positively identified. Family members in Guatemala have also been notified. Our condolences go out to the family. “Thank You to our Facebook followers that commented and shared our post, as this assisted JCSO in spreading the information out beyond Jackson County jurisdiction.”
