Victim of a unique explosion in the driveway of his home at La Salle last Friday afternoon, Harry Elles, 31, La Salle farmer and welder, was buried in Edna Cemetery Monday at 10 o’clock. Rev. Frank Vavrik of Houston officiated at services held at Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bill Talbert, Eugene Kolar, J. B. Kolar, August Trojcak, John Davis and Bill Short. Brief services also were conducted by Ed Sralla of SPJST Lodge No. 153. Elles was killed instantly about 3 o’clock when the end of a tank used for fertilizing was blown off by an explosion. A portion of the tank struck him in the head. The blast was heard as far away as two miles by Jerry Sembera, who was working in his field. Judge Harry Redeker, justice of the peace of the La Salle area, has returned a verdict of accidental death. Redeker and Constable LeRoy Whitfield went to the scene and reported that Elles was using an acetylene torch in attempting to cut away a damaged spout on the tank. W. L. Joy, farmer in the area, owner of the tank, had started walking away to obtain a hammer and chisel to knock the spout off when the explosion occurred. He was knocked down, but was unhurt. Although the tank had been used to hold fertilizer and water, it was surmised the 200-gallon metal container may still have contained some trapped gases which might have touched off the blast. Mr. Elles was born in Hill County February 2, 1928. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Elles, also reside at La Salle. Elles came to La Salle 29 years ago and had been farming and welding on the side. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; a son, Roger Dale; four brothers, Adolf and Rudy of La Salle, Joe of Duncan, Okla. and Franklin of Victoria, and three sisters, Mrs. Oline Paulson of Vanderbilt, Mrs. Matilda Jurcak of La Salle and Mrs. Adina Strmiska of Corpus Christi.

Curtis Wayne Ellis’s love of life didn’t end with his death. Wayne left us on February 3, 2023, at the age of 88, surrounded by loved ones that will honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest, honoring God, and always remembering to laugh. Wayne was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, on August 29, 1934, to John Henry and Mary Pearl Ellis. When Wayne was four years old, his parents moved the family to Palacios, Texas, and later moved to Blessing, where they put down permanent roots and raised Wayne and his five siblings. In his early years, Wayne joined the army, where he received a sharp-shooter medal and a good-conduct medal. His grandchildren remember a legend about when Wayne met Elvis Presley during boot camp. Allegedly, Elvis gave him his famous peanut butter, marshmallow, and banana sandwich recipe that Wayne would slap together for his “lil monkies” regularly. After the army, Wayne started a 30+ year career driving an eighteen-wheeler for Permian Corporation. Wayne met the love of his life, Zana Rosalea Hanna, at a church in Van, Vleck, Tx, in August of 1964. Sharing their love for God, these two were a match made in Heaven. The two understood the importance of working hard for their family while never taking life too seriously. It only took them one year to know they’d be together forever, and they married on August 17, 1965. Making their home in Blessing, Texas, Wayne & Zana raised their four children. Wayne was a true family man, always putting God and his family first. It was commonplace to see Wayne helping with the dishes after dinner, folding the clothes Zana washed, or building a toy for the children in his life to explore and enjoy. He adored his loving wife & took every opportunity to dote on her, even if sometimes in his own loving, teasing way. Wayne was very active in his church & community, always lending his neighbors a hand whenever needed. If you ask anyone around town to describe Mr. Wayne Ellis, they’d tell you he was one of the hardest-working, altruistic men they had ever met. Wayne & Zana shared a love for hymnal music. Zana would play the tunes on her piano, and the two would belt out their favorite hymns wholeheartedly - Whether at home or in their church choir. After Wayne retired, he began working with his sons, Michael Todd and Laddie, on Laddie Ellis Farm and Ranch. He loved farm life, but even more than that, Wayne absolutely adored working with his sons. In the summers, the boys would bring loads of sweet corn home that they spent long days harvesting. Putting up corn became a decades-long family tradition that only got sweeter with time because it was a tradition he was blessed to share with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Ellis; mother, Mary Pearl Ellis; sister, Johnie Lucille Ellis; and brother, Robert O’Neal Ellis. Wayne is survived by his adoring wife, Zana Rosalea Ellis; son, Johnny Dwayne Ellis; daughter, Paula Rene’ Piwonka; son, Larry Paul “Laddie” Ellis (spouse, Sherri); son, Michael Todd Ellis (spouse, Kim); his brothers, Lloyd & Leonard Ellis, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces & nephews. Pallbearers are Anthony Pounders, Brad Finley, Coy Brannon, Scott Gilbert, Garrett Piwonka, and Kyle Giese. Honorary Pallbearer is Levi Piwonka. Services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Blessing, Texas. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Van Vleck, Texas. A luncheon is to be held immediately after graveside services in the church fellowship hall.

Albert Robert Espinosa of Ganado went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 14, 2023 at the age of 55. He was born in Ganado, Texas on July 19, 1967 to Albert and Delores Espinosa. Albert, your time has come and gone to soon, put the John Deere tractor in the shed. Some years were not easy and many downright hard, but your determination prevailed. The fields have all been harvested, your labor is done, your heavenly home awaits. Your legacy lives on, and it's time to close the gate. Albert Espinosa was a simple man with many qualities of being loyal, generous, funny, and above all a family man. He was a son, a brother, an uncle, and a true friend to many. He has left behind so many memories of good times and valuable life teachings so many of us will recall for years. Such as being the life of the party and never needing a reason to fire up the barbecue pit with Joe to cook at the barn. He also had a special sign language that he and Joe used and "we" were expected to know the meanings. He loved to be in his combine during harvest and wouldn't let any auger cart driver catch him in the fields. He took care of us girls with reminding us to cover our water pipes when it got cold and to make sure to put antifreeze in our cars. He was a TIK TOK user and would always share what he saw and was full of facts and recipes. But most of all Albert would help us and he was always there for us. We will all miss him. Albert is survived by his mother, Delores Espinosa, brother Joe Espinosa and his wife Virginia, and sisters: Diana Perez, Gloria Jones, Melba Lowery and her husband Dean, Stella Nava and her husband Randy Reyna, and Sonya Proper and her fiance' Lance Crull, also his best friend Diedra Whitley. The first fatality from a snake bite known in the history of Palacios and community occurred Sunday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Evers, of Deutschburg, 12 miles northwest of this city when their son, Franz Evers, passed away. Franz, in company with a boy companion, Joe Fritz, was out hunting armadillos on the East Carancahua, about five miles from his home. The boys had succeeded in capturing several of these animals and were after another one when it ran into a deep ravine, where a big timber rattlesnake was concealed in the grass, which, becoming angered at being disturbed by the armadillo, coiled, and when Franz, who was in the lead, reached down to grab his game, he was struck without warning by the snake, whose deadly fangs penetrated the boy's coat sleeve and inflicted an ugly wound on his right arm between the elbow and the shoulder. Franz' boy friend, realizing the seriousness of the situation, wanted to slash the wound and let it bleed freely, hoping to thus get rid of the poison, but Franz objected, saying he would wait until after he reached home, so they started for his home on their horses as fast as possible, but had not gone far when Franz began to get blind, and young Fritz was forced to leave him and rushed to the nearest neighbor for help. Mr. and Mrs. Evers were in Palacios shopping at the time and they were telephoned and a doctor summoned at once, but it was all of two hours before any medical aid was given and the poison was all through his system and although everything possible was done to counteract its deadly effects, it was all to no avail. Franz Evers, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Evers, was born in Lorton, Nebr., Nov. 14, 1906. He came to Francitas, Texas with his parents thirteen years ago, and has grown to young manhood almost in our midst. He attended the Palacios school when his parents lived here about two years ago. he was a bright boy, of good habits and beloved by all who knew him, and all mourn his tragic death. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Tuesday morning by Rev. W. W. Wolf, of El Campo, who had known him since a little boy and confirmed him a few years ago. The remains were then conveyed to the Palacios cemetery and tenderly laid to rest. Those left to mourn his going are the father and mother, four sisters and two grandmothers, to whom we extend heartfelt sympathy and commend them to the Father who alone can comfort and sustain them in this sad hour.
