Port Lavaca—A three-year-old Edna child drowned while on an outing at Magnolia Beach Thursday afternoon. Susan Ray Dodd, 3, daughter of Mrs. Sheila Dodd of Edna and Ronald Dodd of Arcola, Texas, was pronounced dead in the emergency room of the local hospital at 3:30 p. m. by the attending physician after an hour’s attempt to revive her. Justice of the Peace Frank Kelly ordered an autopsy, at the request of Dr. J. Kirby Smith. Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Gibson, investigating officer, reported the sheriff’s department was notified of a possible drowning at Magnolia Beach at 2:22 p. m. Arriving at the beach, near Burns Courts, a 2:31 p. m., he reported he found the child lying on the sand with several adults attempting to revive her. Witnesses reported that the child was playing in the water with several children. Then, suddenly missing her, they saw only her feet above the water. Gibson estimated the water where the child was recovered was possibly two to three feet deep. Further attempts to revive her were made on the ambulance run to the hospital. Gwelyn [Gwendolyn] Kathryn Dodson, aged 3 years, 10 months and 23 days, the little daughter of W. L. Dodson, of Goliad, and Minnie Buntyn Dodson (deceased), died in this city Friday evening at 6 o’clock at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. W. W. Leatherwood, from burns received Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Mrs. Dodson died in March, 1921, and for some time past Mr. Dodson has been conducting a blacksmith shop in Goliad. The child was making her home here with her grandmother, who resides in the old Mackrell home in the northern portion of the city. The little girl was playing in the yard with three other children when one of them lit a match and caused her clothing to catch fire. Mrs. Leatherwood heard the children screaming and ran out of the house to find her grandchild in flames. She first tried to tear her clothes off but not succeeding fast enough place child under a hydrant and extinguished the flames. The poor little tot was badly burned about the body and neck and Mrs. Leatherwood herself sustained severe burns about the hands. The child remained conscious until the day before she died. Her last words, uttered while the doctor was dressing her burns, were: “Me die; me see mamma.” A child’s death is pathetic under any circumstances but in the case it is doubly so. Gwdlyn Dodson was a good, pretty and promising child and what a pity it is that she should have met with such an untimely end. But her last words should be a complete consolation to all near and dear to her. She was born in Edna, where the family formerly resided, and would have been four years old on the 24th day of next month. On Saturday afternoon Undertaker Ryan conveyed the remains to Edna, where the funeral was held. Rev. M. M. McMicken, pastor of the Methodist Church of this city, officiated.
