Edna—Betty Beth Cunningham, 65, of Edna, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004. She was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Edna, to the late Forrest “Dutch” and Mattie Camille Cleveland Weigand. She was a member of Womens Home Demonstration Club, W. M. U. and Morales Baptist Church. She was secretary for the Natural Resource Conservation Service. Survivors; daughters, Cheryl Fojtik of Marthasville, Md. and Cynthia Muschalek of Edna; sons, Charles Alan Cunningham, Sturgis Earl Cunningham Jr. and Joe Carl Cunningham, all of Edna, and Ricky James Cunningham Sr. of Victoria; sisters, Flora Lee Moore, Ruth Reckaway and Mattie Rab, all of Edna, and Patsy Jackson of Macon, Ga.; brother, Everett Earl Wiegand of Edna; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband, Sturgis Earl Cunningham; and sister, Nellie Whittley. Visitation was Monday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 2 p. m. today at First Baptist Church of Edna, the Rev. Joe Wes Rubac officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens of Edna. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2152. Funeral services for Ernest Dewey Cunningham, 66, of San Leon, Texas, were held Monday, 2:00 p. m. from the First Baptist church with Rev. James B. Franklin officiating. Interment followed in the Edna Cemetery with funeral arrangements under the direction of Hutzler Funeral Service. Mr. Cunningham, a former long-time resident of Edna died suddenly Thursday night at his home in San Leon. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He formerly owned and operated the Cunningham Barber Shop here and also had shops at Ft. Hood before moving to San Leon. He is survived by his wife Vera of San Leon, a daughter, Mrs. Ernestine West of Edna, who is employed with the Edna Herald, three sons, Jack Cunningham, Houston, Webb Cunningham, Ohio and Ernest Cunningham II of San Leon; sisters, Mrs. O. Z. Finley, Edna, Mrs. Sue Chastain, Del Rio and Mrs. Joe Hunt of Odessa, Texas; brothers, J. D. Cunningham, Placedo and 6 grandchildren. James W. Cunningham, 93, a resident of Edna for the past two years, died at his home Sunday at the Finley Motel. Mr. Cunningham is survived by seven children, 43 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Slavik Funeral Home, the Rev. Carl J. Schlomach officiating. Pallbearers were Roy Meek, D. Meek, J. C. Hayes, Jack Cunningham, J. C. Cunningham Jr. and Dubbie Meek. Mr. Cunningham was born in Florence, Texas, April 2, 1861, and spent most of his life at Blackwell where he served as deputy sheriff. He came to Edna from San Angelo in 1952. Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Gerta Patterson San Antonio; Mrs. Elmer Grimes, Blackwell; five sons, Pink, California; Andrew and John, Ballinger, Levi, San Antonio, and Lawrence, Rosenberg; two stepsons, E. D. Cunningham of Houston, and J. D. Cunningham of Wichita Falls; three step daughters, Mrs. Ray Chastang, Greenbrier, Tenn., Mrs. Joe Hunt, Odessa and Mrs. O. Z. Finley, Edna.

Edna—Jeff D. “Oscar” Cunningham, 89, of Edna, formerly of Placedo, died in a local nursing home Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1992, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Cunningham was born June 13, 1902, in Brady to the late Jefferson and Cynthia Eastwood Davis. He was a retired construction worker for Texas Behalet Construction Co., and a Baptist. Survivors: daughters, Carvelita Chase of Edna and Dixie Laird of Placedo; sons, J. D. “Pancho” Cunningham of Broaddus and Calvin Cunningham of Fort Worth; step-son, Douglas Curlee of Victoria; 23 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Sally Cunningham on Aug. 7, 1979; stepdaughter, Marguerite; his parents; four sisters and one brother; and one grandchild. Services 11 a. m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Edna, the Rev. Joe Webb officiating. Burial in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Jackson County Funeral Home, Edna, 782-5201.

Mrs. Sarah Sally Cunningham, 89, of Placedo, died early Tuesday morning following a sudden illness at her home. Mrs. Cunningham was born Sept. 6, 1900 in Rylie, in Dallas County. A daughter of Mrs. Marguerite Fitzpatrick, died in May. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Thursday at Jackson County Funeral Service Chapel in Edna with the Rev. Walter Day, pastor of Northside Baptist Church in Edna, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. Surviving are her husband, Jeff “Oscar” Cunningham of Placedo, a son, Douglas Curlee of Victoria, two stepdaughters, Mrs. Carvelita Chase of McFaddin and Mrs. Dixie Laird of Edna; two stepsons, Poncho Cunningham Jr. of Lumberton, Texas, and Calvin Cunningham of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Velda and Luella of Dallas; 23 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Elmer Chase, Hershell Laird, James Fitzpatrick, Larry Fitzpatrick, Wayne Marek, Monte J. Callaway, Douglas Lee Callaway and Charles Wise.

Edna—Funeral services for Sturgis Earl Cunningham, 44, victim of a highway accident near Palacios Wednesday, will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Edna, with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating. Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Mr. Cunningham was born Sept. 1, 1935 in Seale, and lived on Star Route, Edna. He was self employed as a fence constructor. He was involved in a two-vehicle collision Wednesday afternoon in southern Jackson County, in the intersection of two county roads about nine miles from Palacios. Surviving are his wife, Betty two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Fojtik and Cynthia Cunningham and four sons, Charles, Ricky James, Joe and Sturgis E. Cunningham Jr., all of Edna; also seven sisters, Mrs. Geraldine Carter of Caldwell, Ms. Idell Vernon of Bryan, Fairy Jo Akers and Ruby Jean Smith of Houston, Dorothy Tarver of Wheelock, Mary Ann Gebauer of Edna and Lovell Russell of Franklin; four brothers, Otho of San Antonio, Billy of Sommerville, Charles in Virginia, and J. C. at Buffalo; and four grandchildren.

Edna—Graveside Masonic rites were held at Edna Cemetery Friday for Burt I. Curlee, 72, former resident of La Ward, who died in a Houston hospital Wednesday Slavik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Curlee was born April 3, 1894, at Big Spring, Tex. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mattie Bolling Curlee of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. l. C. Richter of Pasadena; a step-son, T. H. Deon of Silsbee; two sister, Mrs. S. Shotlie of Houston and Mrs. Don Tindall of Galveston; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Edna—Mrs. Beverly Ann Curlee, 54, of Edna, died Saturday in a Victoria hospital. Mrs. Curlee was born Oct. 30, 1930, in South Dakota, but had resided in Edna for the past 30 years. She served as city secretary for 14 years. Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Edna with the Rev. Joe Webb officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Survivors include three sons, Roy David Curlee III of Victoria, and Dennis and Ronnie Curlee, both of Edna; a sister, Pat Willburn of Port Lavaca; a brother, D. D. “Duane” Hoffman of Mission, Texas; and six grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Richard Browning, Joe Hermes, George Natsis, Norman Glaze, Paul Garza and Kelly Janica. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Moore, Mike Rhea, H. P. Stell, Hugh Ottley and Larry Kessler. The family has requested that in lieu of the usual remembrances contributions be made to Edna Youth for Christ or First Baptist Church.

Edna—Graveside services for Christie Lynn Curlee, two-day-old infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Curlee Jr. of Edna, were held at 2 p. m. Monday in Memory Gardens of Edna. The Rev. Tom Flanagan officiated. Slavik Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The infant was born Sept. 11 in a Yoakum hospital and died there Monday morning. Surviving, in addition to the parents, are a brother, Jason Reid Curlee; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Curlee and Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Webernick, all of Edna.

Dennis D. Curlee of Edna was killed Wednesday in Walker County when the blade and carriage assembly of a forklift collapsed on him. Curlee, a 42-year-old rig supervisor for Nabors Drilling USA of Victoria, was working at a company well site at the time of the accident, which reportedly occurred about 9 a. m. Lloyd Roark, A Walker County justice of the peace, pronounced Curlee dead at the scene at 10 a. m. and ordered an autopsy. It was performed by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s office. He was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Edna to Roy Dave Curlee Sr. of Edna and the late Beverly Hoffman Curlee. He was a rig supervisor for Nabors Drilling USA Company and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors: father; wife of 22 years, Barbara Taylor Curlee; sons, Dennis “Duane” Curlee Jr. and Aaron Wade Curlee both of Edna; brothers, Roy Dave Curlee III of Victoria, Ronald Curlee of Kerrville; and grandmother, Rosie Curlee of Kerrville. Preceded in death by: mother; and grandfather, Roy Dave Curlee Sr. Services will be at 2 p. m. today at First Baptist Church of Edna, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating. Edna—James Paden “J. P.” Curlee, 73, of Edna, died at his residence Monday. Funeral services are pending at Slavik Funeral Home in Edna. Mr. Curlee was born April 30, 1911, in Crandall in Kaufman County. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Phillips Curlee of Edna, whom he married here May 10, 1947. Additional survivors include five daughters, Debbie Leftwich of Richmond, Jewell Green of Houston, Cindy Bradley of Boling, Linda Muegge of Franklin and Sherrie Shutt of Bryan; a son, J. P. Edna—Graveside services for James Curlee, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Curlee Jr. of Dallas, formerly of Edna will be held at 10 a. m. Monday in Memory Gardens of Edna with the Rev. William Halata officiating. Arrangements are under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. The infant was born in Yoakum Friday, and died in a Wharton Hospital Saturday. Edna—Lucille Estelle Curlee, 79, of Edna died Wednesday, April 13, 1994. She was born Oct. 23, 1914 in Victoria to James Oscar and Lena Meta Jaske Thames. She married Tom Jacob Curlee on July 8, 1933 in Victoria. The homemaker was a Tupperware dealer for 25 years and was an election judge for Jackson County. She was a member of Home Demonstration Club, Jackson County March of Dimes and the Baptist Church. Survivors: daughters, Katherine Lucile Curlee of Agua Dulce and Dorothy Ethene Stewart and Glenda Faye Kovar, both of Edna; son, Tom J. Curlee Jr. of Portland, Raymond David Curlee of Inez and Robert Wayne Curlee of Edna; sister, Dorothy Stevenson of Montgomery; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband on Jan. 6, 1968; parents; and one sister. Services: 11 a. m. Friday, First Baptist Church in Edna, the Rev. Jim Gilbert officiating. Bryan—Marguerite Phillips Curlee, 73, of Bryan, and formerly of Edna, died Monday, March 17, 1997. She was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Edna, to the late Oscar “Doc” and Minnie Milby Phillips. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors: daughters, Jewell Martin and Cindy Greer, both of Edna, Linda Muegge and Sherrie Shutt, both of Franklin, and Debbie Leftwich of Rosenberg; son, Jimmy Curlee of Edna; brother, Herbert M. Phillips of Edna; 13 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-step-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: husband, J. P. Curlee; and two grandchildren. Family visitations were held from 6:30 to 8:30 p. m. Thursday, at Slavik Funeral Home chapel. Services will be held at 10 a. m. today at Baptist Temple of Edna, the Rev. Danny Wilson officiating. The many friends of Mr. Nathan B. Curlee were grieved when word came that he had passed away in Edna February 12th, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Green, where he had made his home for several years. The funeral service was held at the Slavik Funeral Home in this city, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Mr. Arden Lawrence of the Edna Church of Christ conducted the service. Interment was made in the Edna Cemetery. The following were pallbearers: Messrs. Douglas Curlee, Howard Winn, Delbert Calloway, Luther Hamilton, Woodrow Dickens and Merle Byars. Mr. Curlee was born in the State of Tennessee December 18, 1871. At the age of sixteen he came to Texas and settled in Crandall. At this place in 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Cynthia Alice Eastep. In 1917 he moved to Jackson County and settled on a farm near what is now the Matilda Booster Station, where the family lived for a number of years. Mr. Curlee was an honest, upright and industrious man, and while he possessed a quiet disposition, he made a large number of warm friends during his residence in Jackson County. After retiring from active farm life, Mr. Curlee devoted a large part of his time to gardening and always interested in agriculture, he was successful to a marked degree. Mr. Curlee was the father of seven children, five boys and two girls. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Calvin. The children who survive are Messrs. Dave, Jesse, Tom, J. P. and Mesdames Vera Green and Ethel Cunningham; also 21 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. The Herald joins the other friends of the family in extending sympathy in their time of sorrow.

Las Vegas—Susie M. Curlee, 90, of Las Vegas, Nev., and formerly of Edna, died Sunday, March 3, 2002. She was born Nov. 9, 1911, in Freestone County, to the late William F. and Edna Cockrell Moore. She was a homemaker. Survivors: daughters, Helen Kahanek of Las Vegas, Nev. and Marlene Curlee of Cleveland; step-son, Douglas Curlee of Victoria; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Edna—Tom J. Curlee, 58, of 1125 Kleas St. died in a Ganado hospital at 6:30 p. m. Saturday afternoon after suffering a heart attack. Mr. Curlee was an employee of Houston Pipeline Co. and had been a Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church for 17 years. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Slavik Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucille Curlee of Edna; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Stewart and Glenda Faye Curlee of Edna and Katherine L. Curlee of Agua Dulce; three sons, Robert Wayne and Raymond David Curlee of Edna and Tom J. Curlee Jr. of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Scaff and Mrs. Walter Green of Edna; three brothers, Jesse and J. P. Curlee of Edna and David Curlee of Kerrville. Pallbearers will be George Frazier, Victor Zepka, George Hermes, H. C. Davis, Wendell Hamilton, Bob Nusom, L. L. Zimmerman and Jesse Ling.
