Little Judy Sue Chase, 12, was laid to rest in Edna Cemetery Saturday following services at First Baptist Church at 2 o’clock. Rev. Robbins Odom, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, officiated. Pallbearers were Charles and W. A. Chase and J. D. Jr. and Calvin Cunningham. A family wading picnic in the Navidad River near the Emil Johns bridge about eight miles north of Edna ended tragically when Judy Sue and two of her little cousins and an older girl slipped into a deep hole about 3 o’clock last Thursday afternoon. The older girl, Patsy Brazil, 16, scrambled to safety and heroically pulled from almost certain drowning deaths Cindy, 11, and Mary Lou Laird, 12, two of Judy’s cousins visiting from Corpus Christi. Patsy was unable to get to Judy Sue, who quickly sank out of sight in some seven or eight feet of water. The four girls had waded in shallow water up the river and when they came to the deep hole sat down on a sandy beach at the edge. As they arose to depart, the sand shifted and they slid into the deeper water. Patsy and the two Laird children raced back to where the other members of the party were sitting near the bridge. In the group were Mrs. Elmer Chase, Judy’s mother; another cousin, Hersaline Laird, also of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Irene and Dianne Chase, and Linda, Sherrie and Debbie Curlee. An alarm was sounded immediately and soon five oil field workers from a rig on the Hollingsworth Ranch farther north stopped. The group, including Joe Lavady, Garves Jones, Melson Lowe, Gordon Allen Baker and O’Bannion Quinn, rushed to the hole and started diving for the Chase girl. Just when most of them were exhausted, Lavady reported he felt the girl’s foot. He made another dive and brought the body to the surface. Efforts to revive the child by means of artificial respiration were started immediately and were continued for some time, but they proved to be unsuccessful. A physician called to the scene pronounced the child dead. Survivors include the parents and two sisters, Irene and Dianne, and the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Chase of Edna, Mr. and Mrs. Norman E. Scaff of Edna and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cunningham Sr. of Seagoville. Judy Sue was born May 28, 1947, in Victoria. Her father operates a used car lot here. She would have entered the seventh grade at Sam Houston Elementary School this fall.

Mr. Clifton was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital in Ganado, following the two-vehicle collision about 4 p. m. Saturday at Highway 59 and the Cordele Road intersection. The pickup overturned and went into the ditch. Both vehicles were considered a total loss. Mr. Clifton was born May 13, 1895 in Yoakum and had lived in this county since 1930. A well-known carpenter, he resided at 304 West Blackjack in Edna. He is survived by his wife, Buela, and 13 children.
