Edna—Julio G. Cabazos Sr., 71, of Houston, died Friday in a Houston hospital. He had been a resident of Houston for 22 years. Funeral services will be held at 9 a. m. at United Pentecostal Church on South East Street with the Rev. Zamora officiating. Burial will be in Edna Latin American Cemetery under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Surviving are four daughters, Rosa Escamilla, Linda Delarosa and Lydia Guerra of Houston and Virginia Benavides of San Antonio; two sons, John and Julio Cabazos Jr. of Houston; two sisters, 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Glenda Caesar, 48, of Victoria, died Thursday, May 2, 2002. She was born April 11, 1954, in Louise, to the late Green and Clevestine Barnes Hardaway. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Edna—Beatrice Calvario, 72, of Edna, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998. She was born May 4, 1925, in Edna, to the late Alfred Nicholas and Sarah Gosa Macias Garza. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Edna—Andres Canales Sr., of Edna, 78, of Edna, died Saturday at his residence following a sudden illness. He was born February 1907, in Gonzales County. He was a retired farmer and a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Funeral services will be at 3 p. m. Monday at St. Agnes Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Hybner officiating. Burial will follow in Edna Latin American Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Slavik Funeral Home from 11 a. m. – 2 p. m. Monday. Ambrosio Castaneda, 85, of 606 W. Colorado, died at 12:10 a. m. Thursday in a local hospital following a long illness. Born Dec. 7, 1899, in Mexico, he was a retired farmer and a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Formerly of Jackson County, he resided in Victoria for 20 years. Mrs. Maria B. Castaneda, 57, long-time resident of Jackson County, died Saturday in a Victoria Hospital. Edna—Sara Alaniz Castro, age 82, of Edna, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008. She was born on March 29, 1926, in Kingsville, to the late Joaquin and Rumaldo Garza Alaniz. Sara was preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband Leopoldo Castro from Edna. Sara is survived by her sister, Ramona Rocha of Conroe; children, Manuel Alaniz and wife Lydia, Jorge Quintanilla and wife Elva, Candy Foster and husband Ronnie, Janie Perez and husband Henry, and LeRoy Castro and wife Amy. She had a gift of nine grandchildren, Claudia and Rebecca Rocha, Lori Barraza and husband, Rick, Jorge Quintanilla Jr., Laura Andrea and husband Adam, Cindi Dowen, Sonia Morey and husband William, Danny Perez and wife Ruth, and Kelsey Castro. She had five great-grandchildren, and one on the way, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Sara was loved by many. Her spirit and love remain in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed. Visitation will be after 6 p. m. today, Sept. 16, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p. m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Alvin—Let us congratulate Lucinda “Lucy” Molina Cavazos on her new promotion into heaven as God’s new angel. Lucy went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at the age of 45. Lucy resided with her family in Alvin, but was formerly from Edna. She was born on Aug. 19, 1963, in Victoria, to Joe and Pam M. Molina of Edna. Since then she has been victorious in achieving God’s task here on Earth by leading so many to his love. Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. Along with her devotion to her family, she was a dedicated member of Lakewood Church as a section host minister. She was born July 1, 1926, in Jackson County, to the late Ilea Hopes and Carl Sayles Sr. She was a retired beautician and a certified nurse’s assistant. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, A. B. Clay, Sr.; her husband, McClellan Chinn; two sons, Ronald Chinn and Timothy Chinn; and sister, Porgie Bryant. She leaves cherished memories to three children; Michael Chinn of Austin, Lynne Chinn Gipson of Victoria, and Tammy Caesar of Round Rock; son-in-law, Reggie Caesar of Round Rock; god-daughter, Phyllis Burton (Furman) of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Tamara Caesar of Sugar Land, Phinetta Chinn and Reggie Caesar II of Houston, and Cassondra Caesar of Round Rock; brother, Carl Sayles Jr. of Houston; step-brother, A. B. Clay Jr.; and two step-sisters, Tommie Mae Fletcher of Austin and Rosetta Wilkins of San Antonio. Visitation will be from 1-8 p. m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 at Tracy’s M. J. Edna--Mrs. Thurs Lee Chinn, 75, of Edna died Wednesday in a local rest home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p. m. Saturday at Scruggs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Billy C. Young officiating. Burial will be in Sayles Cemetery near Edna under direction of the Cook-Butler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Eugene Gipson, James Harris, Leroy Johnson, Clifton McGrew and Thomas Dean. Mrs. Chinn was born Oct. 10, 1907, at Rosenberg. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Heroines of Jericho. Surviving are two brothers, Andrew Phillips of Alleyton and Norris Phillips of Seattle, Wash.

Edna—Conception Contreras, 73, of Edna, died Thursday, April 12, 2001. She was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Gonzales, to the late Pedro and Inocencio Castillos Contreras. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. Edna—Angel Cadena Covarrubias, 84, of Edna, died Saturday, June 28, 2003. He was born Oct. 2 1918, in Esperanza, Mexico, to the late Andres and Socorro Cadena Covarrubias. He retired from ground managements with Sexton Cemetery and was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Cenovio C. Covarrubias, of Edna, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at the age of 87. He was born in Middleton, on Jan. 27, 1924, to the late Andre and Socorro Cadena Covarrubias. Cenovio is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Cenovio is preceded in death by his sisters, Rosario Tejerina and Jovita Rodriquez; and brothers, Andres Covarrubias, Jr., Ignacio C. Corrubias, and Angel Covarrubias. Visitation was Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, 5-7 p. m., with a Rosary at 7 p. m., at Oaklawn Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a. m., Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Edna Latin American Cemetery. Rev. Michael Petering will be officiating. Consuelo “Connie” Ramirez Cruz, 66, of Edna, left this earth, and went to rest with Our Creator, on Sept. 8, 2011. She was a resident of Edna for her entire 66 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jacinto Ramirez and Refugio Garza, her husband Miguel Cruz, her son Andrew Ramirez and two sisters, Ophelia Suniga and Lydia Samora, and one brother Lupito Pena. She is survived by her sons: Gilbert Castro, Ray Castro, Roy Castro, Adrian Castro and Martin Castro; her daughters, Cristina Robles, Gloria Aguilera, Martha Uribe and Monica Guerra; 30 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Surviving is her first husband Encarnacion Castro, sons-in-law Javier Robles, Baltazar Uribe, and daughter-in-law Adela Castro. She also leaves behind two daughters by upbringing; Gabrida Castro and Norma Zarate. Most important she leaves behind, Miley Janae Castro, her great-granddaughter by upbringing. Visitation was from 5 – 8 p. m. Sunday, Sept. 11 with a rosary recited at 7 p. m. with a rosary recited at 7 p. m. at the Slavik Funeral Home in Edna. Funeral Mass was Monday, Sept. 12 at 2 p. m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna with interment following in the Edna Latin-American Cemetery. Edna—Henry Cruz Sr., 66, of Edna died Friday in an Edna nursing home following a lengthy illness. A rosary will be recited at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna at 6 p. m. Saturday. Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Sunday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna with the Rev. Joseph Hybner, pastor, officiating. A military graveside service by Lolita VFW Post 8556 and burial will follow at Edna Latin American Cemetery. Mr. Cruz was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Seguin. He was a retired laborer and member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He also was a member of LULAC, the Knights of Columbus, Cursillos, Lolita VFW Post 8556 and a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Elvira Pena Cruz, of Edna, whom he married Nov. 22, 1938, in Jackson County. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are four daughters, Janie Lopez and Emily Dias, both of Edna, Esther Garcia of San Antonio and Dale Rocha of Victoria; six sons, Henry Jr., Robert, Victor and Abel Cruz, all of Edna, Allen of Port Lavaca and Alonzo of Pasadena; a sister, Beatrice Lugo of Baytown; two brothers, Paul Cruz of Junction and Ambrosio Cruz of Laredo; 20 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. James Coindreau officiating. Burial will be held in Edna Latin American Cemetery under direction of Slavik Funeral Home. The infant was born Dec. 1, 1975 in Edna and died here Sunday.
