Edna—Mrs. Lura L. Billingsy, 80, of Corpus Christi, a former resident of Jackson County, died Thursday in a Corpus Christi hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Maxwell T. Dunn Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Graveside services then will be held at 3:30 p. m. Saturday in the Edna Cemetery, with the Rev. J. A. Munson Jr. officiating, and with Slavik Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements. Mrs. Billingsy was born Dec. 11, 1899, in New Albany, Miss. She was a widow of the late Albert Billingsy who died in 1948. She moved to the Lolita area in 1920 and later to Edna, and then moved to Corpus Christi in 1948. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Alta Hunt of Portland, Mrs. Vera Lee Pawkett of Houston and Mrs. Hazel Bowman of Corpus Christi; a sister, Mrs. Zettie Browning of Mobile, Ala.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John E. “Jack” Billups, 77, retired Edna business man, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. H. Sample, in Houston at 6:45 o’clock this (Thursday) morning. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Slavik Funeral Home and burial will be in the Edna Cemetery. Rev. D. M. Buckley will officiate. Mass will be said at St. Agnes Church at 8 o’clock Friday. Mr. Billups had been in ill health but had been up and about the streets until a few days ago. He was born at Texana on Dec. 18, 1875, a son of the late Capt. and Mrs. J. E. Billups. His father was an early sheriff of Jackson County at the time the town was moved from Texana to Edna. His son, John, better known as Jack, was the first merchant to establish an exclusive gents’ furnishings store in Edna. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura Billups; four daughters, Mrs. O. H. Sample of Houston, Mrs. George Buhler of Edna, Mrs. George Murray of Corpus Christi and Miss Maudie Billups of Bay City; five sons, J. E., Jr., of Refugio, A. X. of Luling, Landry and Travis of Houston and Ed of Seguin; and one sister, Miss Maude Billups of Edna.

Edna—Funeral services for Laura Schmidt Billups, 91, of Edna will be held at 10:30 a. m. Friday at Slavik Chapel with the Rev. Joe Hybner and the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens under direction of Slavik Funeral Home, with grandsons as pallbearers. Mrs. Billups was born Nov. 8, 1885 in Victoria, and had lived most her life in Jackson County. She died Wednesday in a local hospital. Surviving are four daughters, Frances Sample and Lucille Buhler of Edna, Mary Louise Murray of Bossier City, La., and Maude Barton of New Orleans, La., four sons, Andrew of Seminole, Landery of Bellaire, Ed of Seguin and Travis of Texas City; 26 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Miss Maude Zelena Billups, 91, a native of old Texana, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, with Rev. Stanley Petru officiating. Miss Billups, member of a pioneer family, was born Dec. 6, 1873 in Texana, the original Jackson county seat. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She died Jan. 6 in the hospital at Ganado. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. J. E. Billups Sr. of Edna, and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. George T. Buhler of Edna, Mrs. C. H. Sample of Houston, John E. Ganado—Funeral services for Eugene A. Bird, 64, were to be held at 3 p. m. today Thursday at Psencik Funeral Chapel. Buried was to be in Edna Cemetery, with Psencik Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Bird, a retired construction superintendent, was born May 20, 1901 in Idaho. He married Jewell Rogers in 1929? In Phoenix, Ariz., and had been living at Lake Park, Florida. He had been visiting a sister-in-law, Mrs. W. G. Gayle at La Ward and died May 25. He is survived by his wife Jewell of Lake Park, and two sisters, Mrs. Ione Morrison of Mattison, Wis. and Mrs. Mollie Clark of California.

Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Armenia Mae Blaylock, 62, of Edna, will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Travis Holland officiating. Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry, Sonny, Wallace and Ronnie Hadley, and Floyd and Russell Whitely. Mrs. Blaylock was a native of Jackson County, born Sept. 15, 1913. She died Sunday in a Victoria hospital. Surviving is a daughter, Helen Venglar of Inez; son, Joe Blaylock of Louise; six sisters, Artie Hadley, Jewell Olsovsky, Zola Michalke and Syble Irvin, all of Edna, and Lillie Golden of Houston and Tince Cleveland of Casper, Wyo.; five brothers, Hope Hadley, Charlie Hadley and Frank Hadley of Edna, and Sterling Hadley of Houston and Bob Hadley of Chapel Hill; and four grandchildren.

Edna—Joseph Archie Blaylock, 56, resident of Jackson County since 1929, died Sunday in a Ganado hospital. Mr. Blaylock was born April 28, 1911 in Holdenville, Okla., and was engaged in farming and oil field work. He was a member of the Baptist Temple in Edna. Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. Monday at Slavik Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Floyd Conner, pastor of Baptist Temple, officiating. Burial will be in Edna Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Armenia Hadley Blaylock of Edna; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Lee Venglar of Inez; two brothers, Johnny and Jason Blaylock; and two sisters, Mrs. Belle Higgins and Mrs. Vera Massey, all of Holdenville; and five grandchildren. Edna—Elizabeth Ann Bley, 92, of Edna, died Sunday, March 18, 2007. She was born March 8, 1915 in Brookville, Ind. She was a retired nurse’s aide and a member of First Assemblies of God Church in Edna. She is survived by: George and Wanda Tompkins and family of Edna; one niece, Lois Spivey of Ind.; and one foster sister, Kathleen Sintz of Ind. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Anthony Bley. Funeral services will be 10 a. m. today at First Assembly of God Church, Edna, the Revs. David Nurff and George Tompkins officiating. Edna—Herbert Otto William Boening, 87, of Edna, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003. He was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Gonzales County, to the late Rudolph and Lydia Zimmerman Boening. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army Air Force. He was a past member of American Legion and Jackson County Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 318. He was a manager for Kincer Oil Company and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Survivors; wife, Geradine Beckermann Boening; son, Gary Boening of Edna; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be 6 – 8 p. m. today at Slavik Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 10 a. m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Edna, the Rev. Paul Kaiser officiating. Mr. Edward N. Bohn, a well known citizen of South Edna section, passed away at his home Monday, August 23rd, following a protracted illness. He had suffered from heart trouble for several years and his passing, while a shock to his family and friends, was not a surprise. The funeral service was held at St. Agnes Catholic Church in this city Wednesday morning at 8:00 o’clock, being conducted by his pastor, Rev. D. M. Buckley. Interment in the Edna Cemetery. Mr. Bohn was born September 28, 1877, in Stewardson, Ill., hence was nearly 71 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Bohn and children came to Jackson County 22 years ago, and for some time have resided on their place just below Edna. Mr. Bohn was a man who had the respect and esteem of neighbors and friends. He was a man of quiet habits, retiring in disposition but firm and steadfast for those principles that were uplifting and ennobling. Besides his widow, he is survived by three daughters and one son. The children are Mr. Irma Buger of San Antonio; Mrs. Lee Sims of Friendswood and Mrs. Ben Burghaus of Plains, Kans., and Mr. Joe Bohn of this city. To these bereaved ones the Herald extends sympathy.

Edna—Josephine Bohn, 87, of Detroit, Texas, and formerly of Edna, died Friday in a Paris, Texas, hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna, with the Rev. Dan Nietfeld officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens of Edna. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 6 p. m. Monday until the time of services. Mrs. Bohn was born Nov. 21, 1901, in Caddo Mills to Robert and Mary Reneau Emerson. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Edna. Surviving are a brother, Ralph M. Emmerson of Detroit, Texas; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bohn, in 1979 and her daughter, Betty Burgess, in 1975.

Last rites for Mrs. Sophia L. Bohn, 72, who died in the hospital at Ganado Dec. 26 after a short illness, were held Monday at 8 a. m. at St. Agnes Church. Rev. D. M. Edna—Betty Jean (Hessong) Bolander of Houston, TX, age 77, died at Memorial Hermann Hospice on Saturday September 3rd,, 2016 following an accidental fall. Betty was born in Edna, TX on July 10th, 1939 to Jennie Helan (Wilson) and George Graham Hessong. She was a graduate of Edna High School and the University of Houston. She lived and raised her family in Baytown, TX and taught special education at Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School district. She was a board member of the Baytown Opportunity Center for many years and was active in serving and advocating for disabled persons. Her family and friends knew her as a loving, kind, independent, and selfless woman. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Judy Bolander of Houston, son and daughter-in-law Gary and Terry Bolander of Coronado, CA, son Chris Bolander of Houston, grandchildren Brian Bolander, Jennifer Bolander, and Jarrett Bolander, brothers Bob Hessong and Don Hessong, and 15 nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sisters Helen Singleton and Gladys Gearhart, brother Jimmy Hessong, and one nephew. Visitation will be Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 9 AM and the service will start at 10 AM in the chapel at Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen, Edna, TX with Pastors Don Hessong and Barbara Hessong (niece) officiating. Interment will be at Memory Gardens in Edna with Pastor Robert Hessong (nephew) officiating. Edna—Carl James Bolander, 50, of Edna, died Thursday, March 6, 2008. He was born March 15, 1957, in Ganado, to Ruth Ann Lampley of Inez and Ted Bolander of Edna. He was a carpenter and a member of Assembly of God Church. He is survived by his parents; sisters, Rose Williams of Inez and Sue “Paul” Erdelt of Inez; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Thomas Edward Bolander, 24, of 610 E. Virginia, who was killed Saturday morning when his pickup truck collided with the back of a tractor-trailer rig, will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna. Joe McClanahan with the Youth for Christ organization will officiate. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens of Edna. The accident occurred at 2:52 a. m. in the 7500 block of North Navarro, about 60 feet north of Loop 463, as the driver of the rig was taking off from a traffic light. Sam Gayle, 24, of Edna, a passenger in the pickup, remained in stable but critical condition in Victoria Regional Medical Center’s intensive care unit. Victoria Advocate, September 18, 1989 Early Morning Wreck Kills Victoria Man, 24 A Victoria man was killed early Saturday morning when his pickup truck collided with the back of a tractor-trailer rig. The 2:52 a. m. accident occurred in the 7500 block of North Navarro, about 60 feet north of Loop 463, as the driver of the rig was taking off from a traffic light. Killed was Thomas Edward Bolander, 24, of 610 E. Virginia. He suffered head, neck and internal injuries, said police traffic safety officer Jesse Turner, who investigated the accident. Bolander was pronounced dead at Citizens Medical Center. A passenger in the pickup truck Sam Gayle, 24, of Edna was listed in stable but critical condition late Saturday night at Victoria Regional Medical Center’s intensive care unit. He suffered a fractured skull and several broken bones. The driver of the tractor-trailer rig, Ernesto Garza, 39, of 3504 Gale, refused treatment, according to the police. Police said Garza’s truck was pulling a gasoline tanker, which was empty at the time of the accident. The truck and tank are registered to Coastal Transport at 2603 Port Lavaca Highway. Turner said Garza had stopped for the traffic light in the southbound inside lane of 7500 N. Navarro when the pickup truck driven by Bolander approached from behind. After the light turned green, Garza was starting to take off when the rear-end collision occurred. The death brings the number of traffic-related deaths inside the city for the year to three compared to six for the same time last year. A total of 12 traffic-related deaths have occurred in the city and county this year compared to 11 for the same time last year. Bolander was born Jan. 30, 1965, in Ganado. He had lived in Jackson County for 21 years and had been a resident of Victoria for the past three years. He was an auto body repairman and painter. A rosary will be recited at 7 p. m. Sunday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna with Sister Theresa Marie Miller officiating. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Monday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel with Joe McClanahan with the Youth for Christ organization officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens of Edna, under the direction of Slavik Funeral Home. Edna—Funeral services for Charles Wayne Boles, 63, of Star Rt., will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Edna Baptist Temple, with the Rev. Floyd Conner and the Rev. W. N. Blankenship officiating. The body will lie in state at Slavik Funeral Home until 1 p. m. and then be taken to the church. Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery. He died at 8 p. m. Thursday in a Victoria hospital, after a long illness. Mr. Boles was manager of Farmers Gin co., and also manager of the City of Edna Housing Authority, and was a member of the Baptist Temple. He was born June 7, 1903 in Thayer, Mo., and had lived in Jackson County for the past 50 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Boles of Edna, and an aunt, Mrs. Callie Baker of Victoria. Pallbearers will be Louis Roden, Claude Quarles, Herbert Davis, Lawrence Bell, A. D. Gayle Jr. and C. M. Carleton. Honorary pallbearers will be Kelly Freis, W. E. Williams, F. D. Ray, Joe Tom Davis, Richard Browning, the commissioners of Edna Housing Authority, and the directors and employees of Farmers Co-Op Gin.

Port Lavaca—Joyce Robison Boles, 81, of Port Lavaca, passed away Dec. 30, 2006. She was born July 26, 1925 in El Campo to the late Leroy Weitzel and Viola Ezzell Phillips. Mrs. Boles was a graduate of Massey Business College in Houston. She worked as a bookkeeper for over 35 years for various companies including The Port Lavaca Wave, B&T construction, the Military, Deer Park Lumber and Clegg Shrimp Company just to name a few. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Victoria. Survivors include: her husband, Fred Boles of Port Lavaca; son, Larry Robison and wife Cathy of Port Lavaca; daughter, Donna Sterling and husband John F. of Port Lavaca; step-sons, Jerry Boles of New Mexico and Mike Boles of Pensacola Florida; step-daughter, Martha Boles of Dallas; brother, Mark Albert Phillips, Jr. of Port Lavaca and nine beautiful grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Joel Robison, and one brother, Donnie Ray Weitzel. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 10 a. m. at Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna, with Mr. Will McDonald officiating. The family will be receiving visitors at the cemetery starting at 9:30 AM. Serving as pallbearers are Larry Robison, Jr., John Sterling, Jeff Sterling, Tomy Oehlke, Patrick Oehlke, Tyler Oehlke and Curt Gabrysch. Edna, Dec. 26—Services were held at Edna Methodist Church at 2:30 p. m. today for Mrs. Amelia L. Bolling, 82, widow of J. A. Bolling, LaWard farmer and rancher, who died at her home in Houston at 7 a. m. Monday after a short illness. Rev. A. I. Walker and Rev. Pat Marse conducted the services and Settegast-Kopf Co., of Houston directed burial in Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were W. T. Westhoff, W. T. Westhoff Jr., Everard McDowell and Tips Hensley, all of Edna; J. W. Weaver of Port Lavaca and Vernon Hensley of Refugio. Relatives and old friends were honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Bolling was born in Jackson County and lived here until she moved to Houston 27 years ago. She was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. B. I. Curlee and Mrs. Margaret Standard, both of Houston; four sons, J. A. Bolling and Laval Bolling, both of Houston, H. R. Bolling of Liberty and T. J. Bolling of Edna; a brother, Medley W. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at Slavik’s chapel for Thomas Jones Bolling, 73, well-known native of Jackson County. Rev. Mac Turnage, Presbyterian minister of Victoria, will officiate, and interment will be in Edna Cemetery. Mr. Bolling was born in Edna on Sept. 13, 1889. He was a retired rancher and also a former machinist here. He passed away this morning at his home at 105 E. Cypress. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Enid Bolling of Edna; a son, Thomas J. Bolling Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Enid J. Weaver of San Antonio, and two grandchildren; two brothers, S. A. Bolling of Houston and Rudolph Bolling of Liberty, and two sisters, Mattie Curlee of Houston and Margaret Standard of Houston.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock from First Baptist Church for Mrs. Emma Branch Bonnot, a native of Jackson County, who died Tuesday at 3:20 a. m. at her home in the southern part of the county. She was 92 years of age last August. Rev. W. L. Wootan, pastor of First Baptist Church, and Rev. John E. Toppins of Allen Memorial Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Edna Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harold, Joe and Weldon Bonnot, Ervin LaBauve, Jack LaBauve and Claudius Branch. Slavik Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Mrs. Bonnot had been in ill health for several years and frequently was hospitalized. The last surviving member of a pioneer family, Mrs. Bonnot was born August 1, 1865, in the Carancahua community. She was married to the late Alfonse Joseph Bonnot February 8, 1888. They had five children, one of whom, May Lee, the youngest, died in infancy. Mrs. Bonnot resided at the home of her childhood for the last 50 years of her life. She and her late husband were extremely charitable and hospitable. The Bonnot home in the early days was the stopping place for travelers both east and west and north and south. The Bonnot home was always open to these travelers and there always was a table heavy laden with food for the weary and hungry tourist. Survivors include two sons, Carlos Bonnot of Jackson County and Lonnie Bonnot of Uvalde; two daughters, Miss Louise Bonnot and Mrs. Alberta Gayle, also of Jackson County; four grandchildren, Col. C. D. Bonnot of Washington, D. C., and Harold, Joe and Weldon Bonnot of Edna, and eight great grandchildren.

Edna—L. A. “Lonnie” Bonnot, 78, of La Ward, a native of Jackson County, died Thursday in a Victoria hospital following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Edna, with the Rev. Paul Henry Krantzig, of Trinity Episcopal Church of Victoria, officiating. Burial will be in the Edna Cemetery, under direction of Jackson County Funeral Service. Mr. Bonnot, a rancher, was born Feb. 4, 1889 in Jackson County. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Victoria, and active in the Cattlemen’s Association. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Louise Bonnot of La Ward; and a brother, C. C. John Pickens Borden, 67, was found dead in his room at 107 South Cameron Street early this morning and is presumed to have been dead for about 12 hours when found. Following an inquest Justice of the Peace J. T. Linebaugh, Jr., returned a verdict of death due to natural causes, probably a heart attack. Edna—Leonard Edward Bouquet, 58, of Wallis, formerly of Edna, died Thursday in Houston hospital following a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Terry Starry Boyter, 52, of Edna passed away in Victoria. She was a retired secretary with the Victoria Police Department, and a homemaker. Terry loved God, family, people, and pets. She enjoyed doing crafts, putting together puzzles, working in her flower beds and collecting crosses. There was never a time when she was not smiling or laughing. She was retired from Edna school district as a cafeteria worker. She was a homemaker and a member of First Assembly of God. Mr. Branham was born Nov. 21, 1900 in Thomaston, and had lived here since age 16. He was a pipeline contractor and lived at 508 W. Live Oak. Mr. Brahman was a member of the Methodist Church and of Masonic Lodge 767 here; he had been a Mason for 31 years. He died April 14 in a Victoria hospital. Mrs. Hila Ellen Branstetter, 85, died at her home at 307 North Ed Linn St. in Edna at 7:40 p. m. July 18 from a heart attack. She was the youngest of nine children, all deceased. Mrs. Branstetter had not been in good health for some time and suffered a paraletic stroke about two months ago, but had recovered to a great extent until she had the heart attack Friday. Mrs. Branstetter possessed a lovely but retiring disposition and was truly loved by all who knew her, her friends said. It has been quite a number of years that her time was spent mostly in her home and was devoted to her family and church. She joined the Methodist Church at an early age. Rev. I. E. Walker of the Edna Methodist Church conducted the funeral services from the Slavik Funeral home. She was born Hila Ellen Maupin Aug. 21, 1866, in Adair County, Kentucky, where she lived and was married to her now deceased husband, G. W. Branstetter, Dec. 25, 1884.To this union were born six children, two girls, one who died in early childhood. Those who survive are R. L., T. H. and J. W. Branstetter of Edna, Mrs. Ruby Oliver and O. C. Branstetter of Houston, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Shortly after their marriage, they resided in Kansas for a time, returning to Kentucky, where their children were reared. They lived in West Plains, Mo., until 1914 when they came to Jackson County. Interment was in the Edna Cemetery by her husband, who was buried there 12 years ago. Pallbearers were L. S. Taylor, J. W. Oliver, J. W. Porter, O. C. Branstetter, Jr., W. T. McNeil and Walter Frels.

Mr. Branstetter, an electrician and farmer here, was born June 20, 1897 in Horse Cave, Kentucky and resided in Kentucky until the family came to Texas 46 years ago. He passed away Nov. 18 in the Ganado hospital, following a heart attack. He is survived by two brothers, R. L. Branstetter of Edna and O. C. Branstetter of Houston, and a sister, Mrs. L. M. Oliver of Houston. Another brother, T. H. Branstetter of Edna, age 80, passed away on Nov. 1 of this year.

Betty Harper Baker-Bratton of Edna, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the age of 89. She was born July 26, 1922, in Corsicana County to the late George Walter and Verna King Harper. Betty was the owner of Harpers, a retail store in Edna for many years, she also was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed. Betty is survived by her two sons, David Baker of Georgetown and Bill Baker and wife Carrie of Edna; Billy Baker, Becky Morris, David Kelly Baker, Barbara Williams, and seven great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, R. T. Baker and Talmage Bratton and her sister, Alpine Harper Beard. Visitation was on May 8 at Oaklawn Funeral Home. He was a past member and chief of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department and a former longtime trustee and president of the Edna Independent School District. Richmond—Fort Bend County Deputy Sheriff David Lee Braunholz, 26, of Richmond, and formerly of Edna, died Monday morning in a Houston hospital from injuries he sustained early Sunday in a one-vehicle accident. A law enforcement honor guard will stand beside the coffin while his body lies in state from 2 – 9 p. m. Tuesday at Garmany-Cardin Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Rosenberg with the Rev. Russell Moon officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. A spokesman for the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department said Braunholz had dropped off prisoners at the county jail shortly before the 1:30 a. m. accident Sunday. The deputy was critically injured when his eastbound patrol car skidded on a curve in the 4200 block of Ransom Road 2.5 miles southeast of Richmond. Braunholz was flown by Life Flight Ambulance to a Houston hospital. He was born April 12, 1963 in Freeport. A former Marine lance corporal, he had been with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department since November 1988. Surviving are his wife, Judy Beth Braunholz of Richmond; his parents, James E. and Patricia A. Braunholz of Edna; grandmother, Freda Braunholz of Edna; a son, Bobby Lee Braunholz of Richmond; a sister, Donna L. Atkinson of West Columbia; and two brothers, Stephen C. Braunholz and Robert A. Braunholz, both of Edna. Pallbearers will be Steve Felts, Mike Leal, Allen Rivers, Eric Bryant, Raymond Russells and Brad Wichard. Tuesday, October 17, at his home in north Edna. Mr. Ernest Braunholz, father of Mr. Arthur Braunholz, of the Lack’s Store in Edna, passed away following a heart attack. He had suffered from heart trouble for some time, but was able to be up and about a short while before his death. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. I. E. Walker, pastor of the Edna Methodist Church, at the Slavik Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday afternoon, October 19th, at 2:00 o’clock. The pallbearers were Messrs. Paul and Henry Dittrich, Ray Sloat, Jess Cherry, James Denard and George Griffin. Interment in the Edna Cemetery. Mr. Braunholz was born in Hayes County in 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Braunholz moved to El Campo in 1942, and to Danevang in 1915. In 1945 they moved to Edna to reside near their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Braunholz. Mr. Braunholz was highly esteemed by all who enjoyed his acquaintance, for he was an honest and upright citizen, a true and faithful husband and a doting parent. Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, Marvin of Louise and Arthur of Edna, and a twin brother, Mr. Otto Braunholz of New Braunfels. To these bereaved ones the Herald extends heartfelt sympathy.

Freda Victoria Braunholz passed away on Dec. 21, 2006 at the age of 95. She was born on Feb. 23, 1911 in Wharton County, Texas to the late James Clinton and Bertha Reber Smith. The family came to Texas when she was five years old, and she later became a U. S. citizen. Mrs. Brunholz had lived in Jackson County since 1945. She passed away suddenly from a heart attack, Tuesday morning, at her home at 216 West Bois d’Arc. She was a member of the Edna Methodist Church, a life member of the WSCS of that church, and also a member of the Sons of Herman. She was the widow of the late Ernest Braunholz, who died here in 1949. She is survived by two sons, Arthur of Edna and Marvin of Louise; two grandchildren, Peggy Pearson and Jimmy Braunholz; and four sisters, Mrs. Martha Eberhardt of Lockhart, Mrs. Clara Petrosky of New Braunfels, Mrs. Beno Arnold of Kyle and Mrs. Ida Eberhard of Houston.

Funeral services were to be held at 4 p. m. today at First Methodist Church for Richard Don Brazil Sr., 51, president of the Edna Volunteer Fire Department. Rev. J. W. Slavik Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Mr. Brazil was born Nov. 18, 1911 in San Saba, and had lived in Jackson County the past 25 years. He had been in ill health for sometime, but recently was back on the job with Mobil Oil Co. He passed away about 8:15 p. m. April 30 in the hospital at Ganado. He had been president of the Edna Fire Department for nearly two years, and also was serving as third vice-president of the Guadalupe District Firemen and Fire Marshals Assn. He had been a leader in the Edna department since 1959 and previously had worked with the Vanderbilt Fire Department. Fire Marshal John Heaton paid high tribute to Mr. Brazil as a man and as a fireman. “He was a fireman’s fireman, a loyal and hard working man for his community,” Heaton added. Mr. Brazil was also a member of the First Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Charlott of Edna, a son, Richard Don of Goliad, and a daughter, Patricia Louise of San Antonio; his father, Richard Allen Brazil; and five brothers and sisters, W. T. of McCoy; Helen Brazil of Greenville, Dessie Brookshire of Hamilton, and Lorrene Groves and Dale Fournier, both of Temple.

Yesterday about noon J. W. Brickel, a prominent business man of this city for the past forty years, passed away at his home after a lingering illness. The funeral service will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 3:00 o’clock, services at the home and interment in the Edna Cemetery. Mr. Brickel was born in Ohio April 22, 1857, and he and Mrs. Brickel moved to Edna about 40 years ago, where he soon entered the hardware business. He conducted this business for many years, and by his fair and honest dealings with his fellowman, built up a splendid business. A number of years ago he sold his store to the Nowlin Hardware Company and since that time he has devoted his time to the undertaking business and farming and stock raising interests. Mr. Brickel was one of Edna’s most progressive citizens. He served long and faithfully on the Edna Independent School Board; he initiated and sponsored the planting of shade trees on our court house lawn, and he lived to see these trees grow and provide shade and beauty. Throughout his residence among us he was always in the forefront of every enterprise that had for its purpose the advancement f our county’s and city’s interests. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Leila Wangeman, and one granddaughter, Lynette Goldman. To these heartbroken ones the Herald extends sympathy.—Edna Herald

Goliad—Clarence B. Brigham, 80, of Goliad, died Thursday morning in a Beeville nursing home following a long illness. A native of Williamson County, he was born Sept. 22, 1907, to the late M. W. and Maude Wright Brigham. He had been employed at Alamo Lumber before his retirement after 40 years of service. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife, Helen Bolding Brigham of Goliad; a daughter, Grace A. Our beloved Helen Frances Brigham, 96, of Victoria, formerly of
Goliad, passed away June 10, 2012. Helen was devoted to her family. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and tatting. Her family received many of her beautiful creations. She nurtured houseplants and particularly African violets.
She is survived by daughter Grace Alice and husband, Doug

Mrs. Dallas Brown, a resident of Jackson County for 70 years, was laid to rest in Edna Cemetery Tuesday afternoon. She died at her home at 108 South Allen St. Sunday following an illness of a year and a half. Services were from Slavik Funeral Home at 4:30 o’clock and Rev. John Newton, her former pastor and now Presbyterian minister at Victoria, officiated. Pallbearers were H. C. Stevens, Claudius Branch, W. E. Williams, Warren Volkmer, Carver Good and Wm. H. Hamblen. Mrs. Brown was born September 25, 1884, in Caldwell County and came to this county with her parents at the age of eight years. She watched Edna grow from a village of a few stores into the small city it is today. She and her daughter, Mrs. Ervin LaBauve, operated the Variety Gift Shop on Main Street here for 16 years, closing it only after Mrs. Brown suffered a hip injury about a year and a half ago. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. LaBauve of Edna, she is survived by a brother, Ira M. Bowen [Bowers] of Palacios; a sister, Mrs. Faye Smith of Markham; a grandson, Fred Brown LaBauve, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Kay LaBauve Parnell of Houston, and two great grandchildren, Randolph Wray and Craig Reagan Parnell of Houston. Edna—Corrine Browning Reeves, 90, of Edna, passed away peacefully Monday, May 16, 2016 surrounded by her family. Corrine was born August 6, 1925 in Koop Settlement to the late Rev. Ewald and Louise Koop Knoernschild. She was privileged to be baptized, taught and confirmed by her father in the Lutheran church. She continued her strong faith throughout her life of service to her family and her church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, Orville Browning, her “bonus joy” second husband, JZ Reeves, her sister Serelda Sappington, her brother-in-law Jonathan “Doodie” Sappington and all her brothers and sisters in law of the Browning family. She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Beth) Browning Reed (Doug); Brenda Browning Allen (Dan), Robert Browning (Jeri) and Carl Browning (Carol). She loved her 13 grandchildren: Michael Allen (Elise), Kevin Judd (Shelly), Brian All, Kari Judd Hayden (Jason), Joseph Browning (Jennifer), Cara Browning Ross (Sam), Daniel Browning (Jessie), Amber Browning, Laurel Browning Srp (Josh), Adam Browning (Christin), Mark Browning (Stephanie), Holly Browning Kirton (Mike) and Emily Browning Knight (Jason) and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday for Mrs. Fannie Wray Browning, 63, who died February 22 here. Rev. Carl Schlomach officiated at the rites held at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in the Edna Cemetery. Mrs. Browning was born in Union County, Mississippi, December 18, 1887. She married Martin Browning and the couple moved to Jackson County about in 1918, settling below Red Bluff. Within a few years they moved to the LaBauve community near Edna. Mr. Browning died eleven years ago and within a short time her [his] widow moved to Edna to make her home with her son. Survivors are five sons, C. W., J. H., L. R., J. Edna—Funeral services for Mrs. Flora Browning, 87, of Edna, who died Thursday, will be held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Edna with the Rev. Russell Moon and the Rev. J. A. Munson officiating. Burial will be in Edna Memory Gardens, under direction of the Slavik Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be L. E. “Andy” Anderson, Claude Sappington Jr., Calvin Wayne Sappington, Eddy Arnold Chase, Robert D. Berryhill and Travis Pruitt. Mrs. Browning was born Dec. 26, 1893, in Coleman and had lived in Jackson county since childhood. She was the widow of the late William R. Browning Sr. and a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are two sons, Louis Roden of Edna and William R. “Bill” Browning Jr. of Watauga; eight grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren and two great-great-great grandchildren.

Agua Dulce—Freddie Ray Browning, 70, of Agua Dulce and formerly of Edna, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005. He was born Nov. 2, 1934, in Jackson County, to the late J. D. and Mildred Sanders Browning. He was a truck driver for United Gas Pipeline Supply and a Baptist. Survivors: wife, Tula Alford Browning; daughter, Dawn Yzaguirre of Corpus Christi; sister, Sue Bacak of Ganado; brothers, Ervin Browning of Ganado, Douglas Browning of Agua Dulce, Jay Dee Browning of Alice and Aubrey Browning of Orange Grove. Preceded in death by: brother, Jimmy Charles Browning. Visitation was 6-8 p. m. Tuesday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 2 p. m. today at the funeral home, the Rev. Mike Alvarez officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens of Edna. Slavik Funeral Home, Edna, 361-782-2152. Pallbearers: Bill Browning, Stacey Browning, Michael Browning, Shane Browning, Nicholas Browning, Jeffery Allen. Houston—George Leonard Browning, 87, of Houston, formerly of Edna, died Tuesday in an Humble hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Friday at Slavik Funeral Home chapel in Edna with the Rev. Howard Boyd, pastor of Edna with the Rev. Howard Boyd, pastor of Edna Baptist Temple, officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of Edna. Mr. Browning was born Nov. 7, 1897, in Union County, Miss. He was a retired carpenter and member of the Baptist church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Belle Browning, in 1967. Surviving are three daughters, Q. T. Singletary of Houston, R. E. Springer of Pasadena and O. D. Davison of Houston; a son, Waymond W. Browning of Houston, 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Wendell and Troy Browning, Chris and Craig Davison, George and Gregory Tate.
